Does anyone have good suggestions for a golf driver and irons for a 20 handicapper ?

Never been a long hitter, but as I have turned 60 yrs old, my driver distance has dropped about 10 yards.

I hit an 8 iron about 130 yards and my driver about 180 to 190 yards. Looking for one last upgrade before I have to consider senior flex.
There's really not a bad driver on the market

Best option is to get some sort of fitting.

If you're looking to buy a slightly used one, a 2016 M2 would be an awesome choice. As is the Ping 400 max
My dad told me the same exact thing about a month back.

I don’t golf but my friends are nuts about it and buy and sell clubs all the time. Based on their input we settled on a Callaway pre owned 2015 XR driver. They swore it was one of the most forgiving clubs and so far my dad has loved it. His drives are back to a respectable distance and he has been out a lot more. Can’t help you with irons. But check out the Callaway pre owned site if you’re open to used clubs. They are high quality from what I was told and the one purchase I made.
There are so many good choices depending on your budget.

But you really should know your swing speed, launch angle and your spin rate before you buy.

Take your old driver to a store with a demo bay and a launch monitor and hit your current club vs some of the new ones.

You'll find out if you can buy more distance or if a few lessons make more sense.
If your gonna drop money on new clubs

I recommend to go get a proper fitting.

I tried out probably a dozen different clubs when I got fitted for irons. It’s really he only way you’ll know for sure what is the right choice for you. I’ll never understand how people just order clubs and have never swing them or tested them out. New clubs are expensive, fittings are the way to go and the pro will adjust clubs custom to your swing.
If you hit your driver only

180/190 you should be in Senior flex. I hit my driver 230+ and I have "senior" flex irons and reg flex woods and driver. I'm 63.

But yeah, get a fitting if your spending any coin at all.
once you know what you want, go to play it again sports

or ebay and get a decent club for pennies on the dollar.
A fitting is the way to go, but we need to hear from GiantGolfer

Arrows and Indians, invest in a dedicated stretching, balance, squats etc. regimen from a trainer, power your backswing’s coil in balance, from the ground up, and once you start hitting it 220.....then go out and upgrade the driver!
I’ve heard good things about Augusta National

Lessons and fittings are great advice

If you're just looking for some direct club feedback, the poster that mentioned a 2016 M2 and Ping Gmax driver is right. Very popular recent drivers. The Ping drivers Dominated the market last year in terms of most forgiving. This year the new Cobra and Mizuno ST190 are getting a lot of love.

When it comes to drivers, it's really all about getting the shaft right. Good luck!
Forgot irons
mako J : 6/18/2019 10:29 pm : link
I personally love my new Maltby irons. Awesome performance and feel, great looking and half the price. Kicked my Mizuno JPX900F out of the bag for at least this season.
Get something with a light shaft
McNally's_Nuts : 6/18/2019 10:33 pm : link
And somewhere around 10.5-12 degrees of loft.

I’d recommend any of the Ping drivers because the center of gravity is in the back of the club which will get you a bit more distance.

Boom. Just saved you a fitting fee.

I didn’t hit my driver, 3 wood or irons before I bought them.

I hit them great.
Like others have said, don’t make a purchase without getting fitted.
GiantGolfer : 6/19/2019 7:30 am : link
There are too many variables to just take a wild guess. With drivers, you really can’t go wrong with any of the major manufacturers. Ping, Callaway, Cobra, TaylorMade , etc. The key is figuring out the correct shaft/loft/adjustment combination for your specific swing.

Similar conversation with irons, with even more fitting variables due to the different types of head styles (even between the same manufacturer). A good fitter can fit you into almost any club, but it all depends on what type of performance YOU want to get out of it.

McNally quick questions. I am a 19 handicap who’s starting to really put in work and play more this summer. I don’t have an issue with my clubs but I have a friend in the golf industry who can get me a crazy good deal on high quality clubs.

Would you suggest waiting until next year to buy? With the thinking being I don’t have learn new clubs as I’m improving my game. Also at my skill level, will very good clubs make a difference?

It smarts to know this, but it’s true, it ain’t the clubs.
I'm gonna echo the comments here to get fitted
Bockman : 6/19/2019 8:55 am : link
it really does make a huge difference and doesn't cost much. When I got fitted last for Rogue irons I want to say it was only $100 or $150 extra since I bought the set from the fitter.

I'm a mid-capper (currently a 11.6 index or a 13 from the blues at my club) and most of my bag is Callaway at the moment. I have the Rogues for irons and hybrids, and I have a slightly older XR16 for the driver. Love them all, no reason to buy anything new for another year or so.
I love callaway irons and driver
nygiants16 : 6/19/2019 9:00 am : link
I have the xr driver and irons, i had a really bad slice with my old driver, moved to callaway and i still slice every so often but the callaway drivers are very forgiving...

I slice maybe once or twice a round now...
A little golf psychology. You're standing over the ball
Marty in Albany : 6/19/2019 10:16 am : link
and you don't have confidence in the shot. If you swing anyway, you generally hit a bad shot. (Well, I do)

You're better off stepping back and taking a practice swing or two. Sure that takes a little more time and there is a foursome waiting behind you, but it would cost even more time if you hit a bad shot and have to search for your ball in the woods.

(BTW, I'm a very poor golfer, but I take those practice swings rather than swing away as soon as I get to my ball. I've played the last 18 holes with the same Callaway soft ball.)

Back to the psychology. You will be more confident in your game if you know that you don't have to make adjustments to your swing to compensate for your clubs. You'll know that your clubs have been adjusted to compensate for your swing.

Yes, Bruce Koepka could hit it 300 yards with your clubs, but he will play better with his own clubs because they are designed for his game.

But check out the Callaway pre owned site if you’re open to used clubs.

For father's day my kids got me pre-owned 3 Wood and Driver from Callaway. I priced them new a few wks ago and quickly rationalized my old ones would be fine so pre-owned was a great alternative.

The driver is an Epic GBB and the 3 wood is an XR16. My son was able to find both w shaft lengths close to my size. I showed it to a club fitting guy and he said it shouldn't need to be adjusted which is good bc he said you can't take much off the shaft length without missing up the balance of the club. So keep that in mind if you go w the used route.

I've only taken them to the range once so its difficult to judge how much extra distance I'm getting (but I am getting some). The driver has all these adjustments which I'm not really into so I've just set everything to 'neutral' until I figure things out. The 3 Wood really stands out, I hit it once while at the course on Saturday and the guy I was with quickly realized it wasn't my normal club . . . it sounded and felt great.

offer very good customization. The other companies do somewhat. Getting fitted is the best option as long as you keep your mind open on club. I am also a 20 handicap but will be getting much better the more i play since i just started playing last year.
If you like your clubs you will have more confidence and therefore should hit them better. Remember that lessons is critical so you can not get into bad habits or more you can adjust your swing to get out of bed habits.
Thank you

Irons don’t change much year to year, but drivers do change every few seasons.

Pounce on the irons if you can get a good deal
