NFT: Board Game Recommendations

ImThatGuy : 6/19/2019 9:12 am
Got some summer time family road trips coming up. I have a lot of good memories of playing games with family at the kitchen table - and want to try and recreate.

Any new-ish board/card games you would recommend? Kids are under 8.

Also looking for recommendations for board games that the adults can play when the kids are asleep (ie cards against humanity). What ya'll got?
Here's a couple...

1. Axis and Allies

2. Titan

Both great fun!

Clearly didn't read the whole post. Under 8 may be a stretch for them

Cards Against Humanity is a fun one for the adults though!
I've just gotten into board games recently

had a lot of fun with a bunch so far. I've got some recommendations below.

Kids:
Ticket to Ride (also great for just adults)
Catan Junior
Splendor (8 might be a bit young but its simple enough where they still might get it)
Codenames (they have kids versions - Disney, Harry Potter, etc)
Qwirkle

Adults:
7 Wonders
Alhambra
Carcassonne
Settlers of Catan
I love the forbidden games...
TheEvilLurker : 6/19/2019 9:25 am : link
Forbidden desert
Forbidden island
Forbidden sky

They are basically cooperative games where you either all win or you all lose, and each person has a role to play.

Pandemic is good
Catan

Risk is a classic my kids love.

TTR and Risk have great online apps also.
Our family loves BANG!
Dan in the Springs : 6/19/2019 9:55 am : link
it's a fun card game based on the old west. Benefit if you're Italian because the cards all have the Italian names as well as English.

A really young kid would struggle with it - they would do better with Sorry! or equivalent.

I think Bang! would work once the kid is around 5-6 yrs old, probably 6 but depends on the kid.

Pre-teens through adults really enjoy it.
I love board and card games

I second Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne for the adults. For the kids, Monopoly is timeless. You could try Ticket to Ride. I know it is good for adults, but it may work for kids too.

As for card games, my wife recently found two. Exploding Kitties, and Go Sushi. The latter one, I think the kids could get into, while the former would be more for the parents. Check them out. Both are fun.

My oldest son (16) got it for my wife for her birthday and the whole family (8, 11, 14, 16) haven't stopped playing it. There is a ton of strategy and games probably top out at 15 minutes maximum. We usually play 2 - 3 games at a sit down.

Fairly inexpensive as well!
Uconn hit on mine...

Splendor and Ticket to Ride are really fun.

Also really liked The Captain is Dead, but it might be a bit complex for 8 year olds.
Family friendly....

Finance- a simpler, easier and quicker version of Monopoly.

Billionaire - easy to learn and fun

Password and Password Jr - again quick and easy to learn

Sorry/Trouble - a classic

Po-keno - just played this one with the grands (ages 7-10), over a week's stay, and they loved it! A version of Bingo but played with a deck of cards.

Life - another one the grands loved.

Most of these can be had on ebay or on occasion Craigslist for practically nothing.

Enjoy. One of the best activities you can do with the kids.

Game night has always been big in my household.

Rat-a-Tat Cat is the go-to, played more than any other. Easy to learn, easy to play card game. FAST hands, so good when time is limited. Fun.

Settlers of Cattaan board game is a big family fave but often ends with an irate kid. Don't bother with the expansion pack. Game goes on FOREVER with it. A good 45 mins without.

Exploding Kittens card game is a pisser. Quick games.

Recently got into 7 Crowns Card game - loosely based on Rummy, a personal favorite.

Carcissone is an excellent board game though a little complex.

Another card game played in my family for generations is Milles Borne - French car-race themed game. A little complicated, game lasts about a half hour.

2 classics we still own and drag out - have an old 1979 STOP THIEF! Still has the vintage digital crime computer. The other is FEUDAL, an awesome bookshelf game put out by 3M back in the late 60's, basically Chess with a shitload of pieces, a giant board and terrain.

All that said - lately, we've gotten into JACKBOX games, cast to the TV and use personal devices to play - yes, not a board game but these are easily the most fun I've ever had - heart-attack laughter. HIGHLY RECCOMEND. Great for adults or kids.
This is why I love BBI. I've never heard of any of these games

For two player games, my wife and I play Azul, Rise of Tribes, and Ticket to Ride a lot. Also cooperative games like Flashpoint and Pandemic are fun as a team and you can always both play 2 'characters' so it's a '4 player game'.

For 4 person, there are far too many to name but in terms of 'party games' I really like Codenames and Secret Hitler. Both are easy to pick up and can be quick games so you can play a few rounds and keep it fun.

I'd also recommend the Jackbox Party Pack games. You play them on your TV and use your phones as remotes. They have games that all different numbers of players can play like trivia and others. You can buy the games from most streaming devices like Roku, Amazon, Apple, etc...

Will Wheaton does a board game playing show with some of his celebrity friends that gives a pretty good rundown and explanation of the games as they play. I've found a lot newer board games this way and if I see good reviews of a new game on a site like boardgamegeek, I'll try to watch a play-through before deciding if I'm interested in buying.

But do make sure the kids now how to play chess (and know the rules) and play it. Beat 'em one-on-one 'til you can't.
An excellent game for older people...
Dan in the Springs : 6/20/2019 2:13 pm : link
is Quiplash. Not sure exactly how many people are needed, but I'd say at least 4. Great for a larger group. We often play it in groups of around 8. Lots and lots of fun.

It's a Steam product, so one person usually sets it up on a laptop or it could be on a PC. All others join on their phones. The game asks you to write responses and then displays them anonymously. All vote on their favorites. It's easy to do on your phone and always good for a laugh.

That's part of the JackBox games right? They are available on most streaming platforms in addition to Steam
