Cool article from MattLombardo on Big George

Only watched 2 games bc of stance issues, but seems like he/Hunter is already working on the adjustments. I am interested to see the preseason tape, bc he has way more power than Wheeler.

GAA intrigues me. Adams definitely has the power/athleticism, but I worry about his balance based on the tape I watched of him

Nick Turchyn (@Tmanic21)

Was surprised at GAA, bc he has the power//AA, but his stance to strike was tough being such a waist bender. I liked Adams more actually, but def get the issues in his vert sets. Both were vulnerable to rushers w/good UoH. Both were captains though, so I bet improvement comes

Lou Cordileone to San Francisco for Y.A. Tittle QB

Santa Clara California:

Traded to Giants, but He May Not Report

Veteran quarterback Y. A. Tittle was traded today to the New York Giants by the San Francisco 49ers, but he said he is undecided on whether he will report. Tittle was swapped to the Giants for young lineman Lou Cordileone. "While this didn't come as any surprise said Tittle while relaxing at his home in 'Atherton, "I haven't made up my mind whether I should leave to go back to New York so far away. "I have an insurance business in Palo Alto and my partner and I are just building a new office building. Additionally, there is, the problem of my children. Diane is 11, Mike 9 and Pat 7 and all are in school." Tittle said he was not bitter at being traded away after 11 years with the 49ers. He had been on 'the trading block since the close of last season. However, most rumors had indicated he would go to the Los Angeles Rams and thats where he had said he would like to be traded if he had to leave San Francisco. The 49ers were carrying four quarterbacks on the roster. John Brodie had been designated as the No. 1 signal caller when Tittle was put on the block. The other quarterbacks are Bob (Muddy) Waters and rookie Bill Kilmer, up from UCLA.

Part of Game
“I'm not a bit bitter about being said Tittle. "It's all part of the game. Players all over the country are always be traded to clubs. Even if I go I will still live here in Atherton. "It's not an easy decision to make. It's pretty hard to leave your wife and three children for three months and just say see you later.'

Y. A. Tittle Off to New York
Tittle made an excellent showing while running the 49ers in their 21 20 loss to the Giants at Portland Saturday night. He came in in the final quarter and the team scored one touchdown and had the go ahead touchdown called back. "But after the shotgun attack went so well at Portland, I felt more than ever I'd be traded." he said. "I can tell you right now I'm never going to scare anybody packing the ball on off tackle smashes." The quarterback does considerable ball carrying under the shotgun offense. Behind Conerly In New York, the bald headed 34 year old athlete will rate behind the 40 year-old Chuck Concrly as the signal-caller. He didn't know whether he'd be able to make a run for the first string job. "But New York has a good ball club and it would be nice playing lor them." he said. "However, it's a long, long way from home." A spokesman for the 49ors National league pro football team said the deal "was a straight player trade nothing else was involved." Tittle, who resides in Atherton and is part owner of a thriving insurance business in Palo Alto, was unavailable for comment at the 49ers' training camp this morning. The balding quarterback earlier this year said would retire if he was traded lo any other NFL team except the Los Angeles Rams.

Expendable
"I simply couldn't play with an Eastern team while maintaining my business here. There is a' possibility that I could play with the Rams and still have control over the business." Tittle said last May. Rumors had been circulating since the end of the I960 season concerning Tittle's fate because of the new "shotgun" offensive formation put into use midway through last season. One of the finest T formation. quarterbacks in professional football. Tittle became expendable with the development of John Brodie and the acquisition of rookie quarterback Bill Kilmer of U.C.L.A.

Giants Pleased
A Giants spokesman said the team was pleased with the acquisition of Tittle. "No one expects Conerly to play 14 games without rest." the spokesman said. "In that case we are very happy to get Tittle.”

8-28-1961

First round draft selection (from Minnesota) to the LA Rams for Del Shofner

SI.com:

“The Tittle trade was not the only offensive success this fall. At about the same time Mara made a deal that brought End Del Shofner, Tittle's and Conerly's best target, from the Los Angeles Rams. "The Shofner deal came up very suddenly," Mara said the other day. "Some deals—like the one we made with the Redskins for Joe Walton and Jim Podoley—take months to work out."
But Shofner, for one reason or another, presented a real problem to the Giant trading committee, which consists of Mara, Jim Lee Howell, chief talent scout and former head coach of the Giants, and the Giant coaches.

"Del had had two great years with the Rams," Mara said. "And he fitted a need of ours precisely. We wanted an end who could go deep to catch passes, and for two years Del had been able to do that. But in 1960 he caught only 12 passes for the Rams and scored only one touchdown. In 1958 he caught 51 for 1,097 yards, and in 1959 he got 47 for 936. We had to know whether he would play back to his 1958 and 1959 form or would have another year like 1960."

Sounding board
As they always do when presented with a possible trade, Mara and the Giant coaches meticulously sounded out Giant players and coaches who had played against Shofner. Lynch, acquired from the Redskins, had faced Shofner three times. "I couldn't cover him man on man in 1958 or 1959," Lynch said. "I couldn't cover him in 1960 either. He's as good as he ever was."

Tittle, just in from the 49ers, had looked at Shofner three times in each previous season. He had also played with Shofner in Pro Bowl games. Said Tittle: "I talked to him at the Pro Bowl game and, as far as I know, he dropped a couple of passes against the 49ers early last year, and the club lost confidence in him. Then he lost confidence in himself and they put him on the bench. He had a series of muscle pulls, too. But he is as good as he ever was."

"We were still doubtful," Mara says. "But you've got to take a chance. You can't think the guy I'm giving up may come back and beat me. If Shofner played back to his '58 and '59 form we wanted him badly. And we trust our people. So we traded the Rams a first and second draft choice—in different years—for Del."

https://www.si.com/vault/1961/11/20/619082/a-successful-trader-in-giants

Note: Do to some side deals it ended up being the Vikings number one for Shofner, the Rams selected Roman Gabriel in the 1962 Draft.

8-14-1965 Prelude to the deal...

GREEN BAY) - The Packers, led by Bart Starr's passing and a bruising defense, hammered the Giants 44-7 Saturday night in the exhibition opener for both teams before a crowd of 50,837. Starr completed 10 of 12 passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns, including a 51-yard strike to Carroll Dale and a eight-yard bullet to Bob Long to account for the first two Packer scores. Tom Brown, a second-year man from Maryland, got off the longest run of the night, an electrifying 92-yard punt return for the Packers' sixth touchdown.

PASSING
GREEN BAY - Bart Starr 13-10-153 2 TD, Dennis Claridge 3-1-47, Zeke Bratkowski 4-3-30, Tom Moore 1-0-0, Paul Hornung 1-0-0 1 INT
NEW YORK - Gary Wood 12-3-38 2 INT, John Torok 6-2-38, Steve Thurlow 1-0-0

Erich Barnes to Cleveland for Mike Lucci and a third round draft selection. Lucci and Darrell Dess and a fourth round selection to Detroit for Earl Morrall.

Three-Way NFL Trade Giants Get Morrall NEW YORK (AP)

“The New York Giants, whose rebuilding plans have been stalled by the lack of an experienced quarterback, obtained 31 year old Earl Morrall from the Detroit Lions Monday in a three way deal which also involved the Cleveland Browns. To get Morrall, a 10 year-man in the National Football League, the Giants first sent defensive back Erich Barnes to Cleveland in exchange for linebacker Mike Lucci and a future draft pick. Then they traded Lucci and offensive guard Darrell Dess, plus a draft choice, to Detroit for Morrall. Morrall, who was the No 1 draft choice in the NFL in 1956.
Coach Harry Gilmer decided to go along with Milt Plum as his regular quarterback Morrall and Plum alternated last year until Morrall was hurt in mid-season, but Gilmer believes a club can have only one regular at the position The deal immediately recalled the one that brought Y.A. Tittle to the Giants from San Francisco in 1961 to replace Charley Conerly. Tittle's pass- ing led New to three straight Eastern Conference championships before they fad- ed to last place in 1964. Tittle's retirement at the end of the 1964 season left the Giants with only one quarterback who had any NFL game experience Gary Wood. Henry Schichtle, another second-year ma'n, didn't get into a game last season. The other candidate is Bob Timberlake, a rookie from Michigan whose progress has been hampered by a sore arm. Coach Allie Sherman of the Giants emphasized that he didn't expect the acquisition of Morrall to solve all the club's problems "But it will help speed up our rebuilding he said. "We gave up one of the best guards in the league and one of the top defensive players Last season Morrall com- pleted 50 of 91 passes for 588 yards and he has a career record of attempts and 624 completions for yards. In pre-seaspn games, none of the hree Giant quarterbacks had been able to generate a strong enough passing threat to make he running of Sherman's Baby Bulls effective.”

Should be fun to watch, and just might have a major impact on the team going forward. Big George vs. Paul Adams. It would be great if the Giants could develop at least one of them into a serviceable OT. It's been a while since the team has been able to do that with a late-round pick or UDFA.

For the Jets fans. Here’s the reason Adam Gase can’t pick his own players. His arrogance/confidence makes him feel he can fix every player’s warts. He’s pretty defiant about it too, so he’ll overlook a player’s MAJOR issue, like a certain TEs struggles with the physicality of FB.

It sure doesn't sound like he has learned from his mistakes.

I would say that is impudence, not arrogance.
