Everything you Read about this guy is positive! I almost threw the remote when we drafted him (wife was in the room so I couldn’t) but I’m totally on board now.
Nice read, and the video highlights linked in the article Â
are great to watch too. Yeah, it’s practice, in shorts, and highlights only, yadda yadda yadda...but Jones seems to have a smooth, quick release and throws a tight spiral and accurate ball.

In general it's a good thing. But you can't expect Giants.com to put out pieces criticizing their first round, #6 overall QB who's already taken a ton of flack from fans and the media.
that were screaming that Gettleman didn't know what he was doing are going to be eating crow in 2020, or who knows, maybe 2019.
People were upset at Gettleman because he turned his back on some of the things he always talked about
1/ that he needed to draft 3 immediate and impact starters
1 guy is poised to be a redshirt unless we start 0-4
1 guy is only slotted in to start on 1st and 2nd down
2/ that you should never reach
3/ he mocked the scouting process and the work done by his entire office by declaring that all he needed to see was 2 Shrine game series to determine that DJ was his number 1 pick. A glorified preseason game where the QB knows there isnt any blitzing allowed.
4/ his preference that DJ is on the bench for 3 years
make an informed comment when the guy hasn't taken one legitimate snap in a professional game yet. Like most, I'm encouraged by what I'm hearing that he is intelligent, has a quick release and solid mechanics--but we knew that already. Ryan Leaf also had those attributes--but when game day rolled around he was dog shit. Only time will tell for DJ.
was boring as sin. Or, if you prefer, boring as Eli.
I don't know what you were listening, but that was one of the best interviews I have heard in quite awhile.
Lance really went in depth with Daniel Jones about how he learns, what he sees and how he works. It was so refreshing to hear an interview like that instead of the tired old stirring quarterback controversy media angle.
It's been widely bandied about that Eli will mentor his successor, but I haven't read concrete anecdotes or description of that relationship. So, the following stood out, the presumed notion vs DJ's concrete references to Tanney:
Quote:
The tutelage from Manning has been well-documented, but there are two other people in the facility making a big impact on the rookie: backup quarterback Alex Tanney and offensive assistant Ryan Roeder.
“Coach Roeder and Alex have helped me a great deal already,” Jones said. “I think that whole room with Eli, Kyle [Lauletta], Alex, Coach Roeder, Coach [Mike] Shula, it’s been great for me to be with those guys and how much experience everyone has in the room and to learn from them. Alex is a guy who’s been in the league for a while and knows how it’s supposed to look, knows how you’re supposed to prepare. He’s helped me a lot within that preparation aspect for practice and taught me a few things in how he prepares and what kind of helps him get ready
In other words, note the specificity re Tanney, the absence of same re Eli

Ryan Leaf was nothing like Daniel Jones. Check out the Moving the Sticks - Daniel Jones 360 podcast to get an idea of who Daniel Jones really is. It's long, but gives a good idea of who Daniel Jones really is.
Comparing Ryan Leaf's attributes to Daniel Jones' is wrong.
1 guy is poised to be a redshirt unless we start 0-4
1 guy is only slotted in to start on 1st and 2nd down
I'm assuming the second line refers to Lawrence??
He can be a 3-down DL player. He isn't just a big body run stopper, but since you've run with this narrative since draft night (when you melted down about Gettleman lying), I guess you're sticking on the side of ignorance.

You probably couldn't have picked two disparate players if you tried.
Leaf was both a HS defensive standout and a QB standout. He really wanted to play for the U as a LB. Jones was a basketball, baseball and football player.
Leaf was universally regarded as cocky and brash - a reputation that followed him and dogged him in the NFL. Jones has probably never been described that way. In the lead up to the draft, Leaf put off quite a few teams with his attitude and weight gain:
Quote:
Leaf missed his slot for team interviews, making many GM's wonder about his maturity. Leaf's draft prospect profile described the player as "self-confident to the point where some people view him as being arrogant and almost obnoxious". Leaf gained about 20 pounds between the end of his junior season and the NFL Combine in February, which Jerry Angelo, one of six experts Sports Illustrated consulted on the choice, described as "a negative signal" about his self-discipline.

1. Gettleman said before the draft that they needed two starters. They got them in Lawrence and Baker.
2. He didn't reach. Jones was the QB at the top of their board. If they were just picking QB and others were higher on their list then they would have drafted Haskins or whoever.
3. You are selecting a quote out of context. They watched film. They talked to coaches. They interviewed Jones. Gettleman's quote to the media that they "fell in love" with Jones at the Senior Bowl was just sound bite material. They did their homework.
4. Are you stupid enough to think they are going to use up all of Jones entry level contract with him sitting on the bench? If can't notice bullshit talk by a GM by now then you're either in denial or pretty simple minded.
To prepare, Jones spends much of his time studying the script of the upcoming practice. His first priority once he gets on the field is to get the call right in the huddle, which is something he did not do much with the Blue Devils.
The amount of Giants fans that want their GM to be completely Â
truthful in his pressers makes me embarrassed for this franchise. This seems to be among the biggest complaints of those that think DG is incompetent. This, the Jonathan Stewart contract that totally hamstrung us for years, and the weird analytics guy. Waaaah he lied to us. Yeh lets just broadcast to the rest of the NFL what we want to do in the draft and FA and alienate our own players at the same time. Brilliant!

I think if you ask Ryan Leaf now if Ryan Leaf of 1998-2004 was intelligent, he might not agree with you. An intelligent/mature person would not have acted like he did.
Within the last few years, Leaf wrote a letter to his younger self and he wasn't congratulating his younger self on being intelligent, hard working, mature, etc.
DJ seems to have all the positive intangibles that Leaf lacked.
To prepare, Jones spends much of his time studying the script of the upcoming practice. His first priority once he gets on the field is to get the call right in the huddle, which is something he did not do much with the Blue Devils.
Yeah, that stood out to me as well. You would hope that someone who writes professionally would avoid stuff like that … but we're all human *grin*
Why can't he coach himself to be a good qb?? Drop his useless ass already.
The NFL is littered with quarterbacks that are better coaches than quarterbacks. Jason Garrett is a prime example. Doug Pederson is another.
There is a difference between talent/ ability and intelligence, so to say he is useless is just flat out wrong. You do not know the value or non value he brings.
shurmur would strongly disagree with you as far as his value.
By all reports DJ looks good...so far. Yay! Right? All of us should be able to agree? Happy? Why the incessant need to shit on everything? Did the Gmen not draft the player wayer you wanted? You still mad about that? Still got that frowny face? Awwww, I feel so bad for you. Maybe we can get you a tiny binky and you can dip in your beer. Sound good? There's that smile, oh, you're such a good boy.

Did you just read the excerpt, or did you listen to the entire podcast? Reason I ask is that this was a response to a question asking specifically about Tanney and how he has helped Jones.
In other words, you're reading too much into his reflection on Tanney.

If you are gonna cite Gettleman you should at least be consistent and not state one thing he said and then project something that contradicts what he said. Point I’m referring to is suggesting Lawrence was drafted as a two down player when everything said and done since his selection has suggested this is not the case.
Lawrence is part of the Giants plans to improve their pass rush. Do not be surprised if he logs more snaps than Tomlinson and Hill, I expect him to. Per reports from Duggan he has played more snaps in nickel than either of the other two in practices, he has started defensive end position but will be moved around formation. He’s the most talented, impactful player of the three and the Giants are counting on him to make an impact.
In post draft presser and since when Giants are asked if they did enough to improve pass rush Lawrence’s name is always one of the first names mentioned. Thy didn’t draft him him to be a two down run stuffer, they already had one of those in Snacks and wanted a player that brought more to the table, that’s what they got In Lawrence.
RE: And we saw some people raving about Webb too Â
More than one in or close to organization were touting Webb.
Yes but those people were probably Reese, Ross, and McAdoo. I am sure the people who praised Webb or either out of the league or no longer with the team.

No, I remember Landon Collins raving about him. And many of the same beats with positive reports for Jones felt Webb was the future. And it was well regarded about what a tireless worker Webb was, not dissimilar to this sort of report.
I like hearing good things, but truth is we just have to be patient.
In other words, note the specificity re Tanney, the absence of same re Eli
An astute observation. I think people assume as much knowing how loyal Eli is to the organization. But the reality is, it’s not like Eli’s thrown in huge home town discounts or anything like that —the Mannings can play the business as well as football side, if you know what I mean.
None of that is a knock on Eli. Just that he’s more complicated a man than the simple ‘aw shucks’ stereotype of his. And the organization hasn’t asked him to usher the new guy in on his way out. They’ve asked him to win football games and are desperate to have achieve that. That’s where his focus is, he is the starting QB for a team expecting to compete, after all.
(and I'm not sure the 'astute' was a sarcasm off, I'll take it as written). But UA none of that is to say Eli couldn't go out of his way to mentor DJ, give him some tips and cues, etc. It just sounds like he hasn't, otherwise, I am sure DJ would go out of HIS way to acknowledge that.
Agree with the observation that EM is more complicated than his Opie persona, it's really more Archie/Eli-on-draft-day persona. Lots around here make out as a saint.
Look forward to seeing him in training camp

Defensive line is by design and at their best when rotational.

He did exactly that. Of course he traded up to get the second one, but still.
And we don't know if any of the others might not become a starter by the time the summer is over. I wouldn't count that out from happening yet.

The more I hear about this stuff and how great he is in practice. it just seems more like the kiss of death when he faces real opponents...
