to have to use Chappy here. But let's just secure this win and call it a night. The rest of the big guns will be rested tomorrow unless something goes horribly wrong.
worst job this year. This guy was on fumes getting out of the 8th. Hale's had about 4 guys way down in the count and could not put them away.
I understand saving the pen, but that was just ludicuis.
have a 7-run lead, taking a chance on saving the pen isn't a mistake at all.
The way some of you guys analyze the use of relief pitchers is really unrealistic.
Fats he was out of gas. It was obvious as hell. Yeah nice to get by if you can, but after Hale couldn't get an out with several 2 strike counts with 2 outs, he should have been pulled. You cannot allow a team like the Astros to hang around. He had some cushion, yes but you not only subject the pitcher to excess pitches, but Sanchez too.
Personally I dont think they have the pitching staff to make the WS, but they sure do have the bats to do it! I think this team is banking on the bats getting them there. Hoping it pays off!
But I don't think it's worth getting bent out of shape about either way. It's a great night to be a Yankees fan.
Same here. He's putting trust in guys like Cortes and Hale and, big picture, it's been paying off.
Yanks making a smart move to option Cortes instead of DFA'ing Maybin too. Rewarding good play. Oh - and Frazier hit a monster HR for the Railriders tonight. All of a sudden we've gone from not enough outfielders to 6 good ones. Good to see Stanton get 3 hits as well.
one batter too long, to Girardi's one batter too early.
Not me. Girardi IMO really knew how to use his pen well.
I don't want any manager leaving a pitcher in one batter too long. That could prove to be disastrous. Why wouldn't you want a manager getting a guy out of the game before its possibly too late?
Seems to me a manager is on top of what's going on when he doesn't let a reliever go one pitch or batter too long.
Now, having said all that I had no problem with Boone leaving Hale in last night like he did. A seven run lead isn't the situation I'm talking about with my above comments, it's the close game that can change with one swing.
Because the Yankees aren't hitting enough home runs...
we fortunately had seats just under the 2nd deck overhang, so stayed dry when the rain hit...a couple random musings...
- Great fun seeing the Yanks hit like that...Stros starter sliced through our bats 1st time through, then boom
- Yanks defense was on display...outfield range, and smooth work around the infield. That's an area that's been a real upgrade over last year...LeMahieu makes a big difference wherever he's playing
- Fired up to hear they're sticking with Maybin...he brings a lot to the roster, including a better than expected stick. Gives Boone a lot of flexibility for rest days and more potential injuries in the 2nd half.
- I expect they'll be going with the Scranton shuttle to swap out fresh long relievers, at least until they can figure out a 5th starter. Solid work by Cortes following Green last night, he'll be back
- Split a little early to beat crowd to the 4 train, so didn't see Hale lose it late, but on balance Boone's done a fine job with the pen this year. Sure, second guessing leaving Hale in too long is fair after last night, but turning it into a Boone's stupid and sucks at managing the bullpen narrative is silly
Overall, Yanks are ripping. This lineup will be getting in the head of opposing pitchers...zero breaks 1-9 when at full strength
Thrilled to see Maybin stick. Beyond his very good performance, he seems to be really well liked by his teammates and Boone spoke to how positive he's been in the clubhouse. Maybin also spoke to the changes the hitting coaches have made with him to work on getting the ball in the air more and utilizing his strength and athletic ability. He's earned his spot
Overall that's something that's struck me watching this group, just seems to be a very close team having a ton of fun right now. A very strong clubouse right now. Encarnacion seems like he fits right in already too.
should return a PTBNL or cash considerations in a small trade.
.
Too bad that hasn't translated into a good major league pitcher. He's been around long enough to have figured it out by now, and hasn't done it. I don't think you could even get a PTBNL for him, maybe a little cash.
I'd try to see if Cessa can get us cash or some low level PTBNL. There are a lot of really awful bullpens out there right now - someone might bite.
If not, I'm not opposed to just going the DFA route. Someone claims him, so be it. I think I like Hale more for that role going forward. Cortes looks like he's emerging as a guy who can also pitch several relief innings - he seems to be thriving as Greenie's piggyback in BP games.
So, while Nestor will be the casualty right now for Judge - he's going to be back sooner than later. We're going to have to do a little roster crunching, though.
Morales will also likely be gone once he's healthy.
I can't wait to see this lineup tonight with 99 in it.
The Death Star will be complete (offensively, at least..)
+1 Stanton is a pro.
For a star he certainly is not a prima donna
No clue what Paul O'Neill was thinking when he said great effort. He totally botched that play.
I understand saving the pen, but that was just ludicuis.

I agree, FM. Great win. Some team. And here comes da Judge!
1 down, 3 to go.

And they have almost caught the Astros. Think they are percentage points ahead..
Twinkies lost to the Royals. 1 game back in the loss column.
I really hope so. He shouldn't go anywhere.

Will repeat what Ive been saying for a few days: Cameron Maybin isnt going anywhere. He will remain on the 25-man roster when Judge is activated.

They get too emotionally involved and backseat manage too much. Such are fans.
Yankees now up by 4.5 games.

And now the Judge returns, look out!
Guessing Hale?
Quote:
soon. Who goes when he is ready? Holder has options. Only other pitcher is Cessa who has no options.
Guessing Hale?
I would dump Cessa, the Yanks probably won't.
He is garbage.

They seem to like going into the annual International Signing pools with close to max available dollars
