I was talking with a buddy today. I'm 41 so I've been a fan since the mid 80's. Through the 90's dynasty and all the great teams in the 2000's. I think this particular lineup is the most talented Yankee lineup I've seen as a fan.
The Murderers' Row and Cano lineup was incredible but I think this is better top to bottom.
He commented that given good health over most of a season, its fair to expect 8 of the Yanks 9 best starters to have at least a chance to hit 30+ home runs. Hicks and Didi may be closer to 25 HR guys, but the point remains. The only one who typically wouldnt is LeMahieu, whos a perennial contender for batting champion type hitter.

I'm older than you and remember the 1961 lineup, that won 109 games and hit 240 HRs without a DH. That lineup was generally something like:
Richardson
Kubek
Mantle
Maris
Howard
Berra/Blanchard
Skowron
Boyer
Pitcher
As noted, no DH. That was a pretty great 3-4-5-6 but Kubek was no Aaron Judge at the plate in the 2 spot, and Gleyber is a much better hitter at 8 than Boyer was. Of course the 1998 team was great too, but more because of its pitching.
the Yankees moved him to the bullpen this year after years as a starter. He looks to finally be adjusting and hasn't given up a hit in 4 outings. He is hitting 100mph as a reliever with a good changeup. His slider was always the pitch that gave him his problems but it has reportedly improved a lot. Even though he might have three major league pitches the Yankees gave up on him as a starter cause he always gets hurt and can't handle the innings. He is on the 40 man and was called up for a second last year so they might very aggressive with him and look at him as a power arm in the second half.
I think the 2009 offense, until proven otherwise, was a little deeper
They only got meh production out of the Melky/Gardy combo in center, but damned if the rest of that lineup couldn't mash. Hit for average, hit for power, drew a bunch of walks. They even ran well.
I mean, no one can realistically expect LeMahieu to bat .475+ with RISP all year - I don't think .400+ is unrealistic at all, though.
And he's led the league in hitting before. So, this isn't totally out of the blue. He's just a really good hitter. His approach really doesn't change in any situation. He's very consistent and sound mechanically.
I expect minor regression; but not a whole lot to be honest.
He's the MVP of this team so far this year. Sanchez is right there, too. But if I have to pick one guy to date - it's DJ.
Still amazed by Luke Voit's emergence. Didn't give that trade a second thought at the time, and now he's a legit All-Star caliber player - 17 HR, .387 OBP. Crazy.

I still think the 2009 Yanks had the best infield of all time, at least offensively (the Big Red Machine of mid-70s may argue)
Texiera, Cano, Jeter and ARod, all in or reasonably close to their prime. That was Jeter's big throwback season (.871 OPS) before he started to fade.
That was 3 years ago. What did he do in 2017 and 2018?
Be a very good player who averaged a 2.0 WAR as an infielder. In his other years since 2015 he has averaged a 92 wRC+ so he didn't hit. When you combine that with his elite defense you get a very good player. Obviously 2016 and this year he is putting up MVP level numbers. But given he did this already in 2016 it is not without precedent. He has this type of talent.

IMHO, the 1998 is the best team I have ever seen and I think they may be better than 1927 and at worst they would give that team a run for their money.
28 straight games with a HR... all time MLB record.
And on top of that, I believe this is 161 games in a row the Yanks have gone without getting blanked. That record is over 300 games, IIRC... so we're not even close on that, but regardless; not easy to do these days.
Sucks to have to see the team hit all these HR's when they'd be better off hitting singles... but I'll take it.
We might have something here with Cortes... he's getting a lot of hitters out. Love the way he's able to change arm angles and change the eye-levels of the hitters.
He certainly doesn't have overpowering stuff, but he gets guys out and throws strikes. He's pretty crafty and has been perfect in this role so far.
As for the whole opener strategy, I think we should get used to it. Even at full health, its almost a no-brainer for next year as a way to utilize Happ as part of the regular rotation and not have his 3rd year vest.
1st inning, he tried to go to 3rd on a ground out by Voit and Richard tripped and fell on Stanton stepping on his left hand. Looked like he got spiked on the wrist and fingers.
Precautionary I hope, Ice it....
Hopefully that was more precautionary than anything else and will just be a day to day thing if anything. G didn't seem like he was in that much pain, but I know that's not a good way to really judge or speculate on an injury.
Sucks that Maybin is on the shelf now too. But, we'll be alright.
laughing. Voit tags and takes second on a fly to center. Then tries to score on a solid single ripped to left...Even Gardy and Hicks may have had trouble scoring there.
Lol, yeah - I wasn't even mad at that. I just laughed. I mean, he had less than zero chance on any throw that was even close to the plate. The ball was there before he got much further than halfway and he knew he was dead to rights.

Gary let the first pitch - the best one he got to hit - go by. Then he swung at a couple of pitches way out of the zone. He's great but he could improve his plate discipline with two outs and a man on third.

Last one was out of the zone, the second strike was right on the inside corner - a called strike if not swung at (IMHO).
Blows my mind how often players get hurt just sliding into a base.
A knee contusion just from a head first slide? Just seems like this shouldn't happen to a pro athlete but... I am no pro athlete so what the heck do I know.
RE: RE: Stanton getting an MRI on his knee, not his hand.
wow, showing the replay he came down hard on the knee (then got spiked on the hand). Hope he's OK.
Unreal. I've said it several times, let these guys take whatever drugs they need to stay and get healthy. There is an array of drugs available to do this. They lose and the fans lose when they aren't able to get and stay on the field.

I guess with the 2 off days in a row, he feels comfortable going to Chappy. Figured he'd go to Ottavino before Chapman tonight - but it looks like Otto is the one they want to get the rest for.
Just a little random side note... Ottavino has been fantastic this year; his peripherals suggest he might be due for a little bit of an ERA correction soon, though.
1.56 ERA... but a 4.14 FIP. His K/BB is actually near a career low (1.96 compared to 3.11 last year)
1.240 WHIP (0.991 last year)
I don't think he's going to just hit a wall and suck, but his ERA probably isn't going to stick under 2 for too much longer.

So those numbers can mean anything.
Sure they can. They suggest that he's been a bit lucky.
His .224 BABIP says similar.
Doesn't mean he's going to just be bad out of nowhere. He could continue to just keep rolling. But, those peripherals were all different last year... better K/BB, lower WHIP, lower FIP, lower xFIP. Higher walk rate.
The big number is the LOB number.. he's @ 99% - that's probably where the regression is going to come from. That's not something he'll sustain all year.
is happy that they got Galvis out, but he is probably even more relieved that Galvis put that ball in play. Because he got crossed up on that one, he thought slider and instead 102 was coming. If Galvis misses that Gary was in trouble.
and Chappy were talking about at the end? Looked like they had a miscommunication.
Man, this team is so much fun to watch!
I always suspect thats related to the runner on 2nd signaling pitch or location to the hitter. Probably called the next pitch or two, or changed up the signals
and Chappy were talking about at the end? Looked like they had a miscommunication.
Man, this team is so much fun to watch!
I think they were talking pitch sequence. Talking about attacking each of those batters. That was a serious talk. To me that was Gary learning and packing away information.

It was definitely about the cross up on the last pitch. Like Mook said, Gary saw his life flash before his eyes there expecting slider but getting 102
Another solid win. Maybe not the laugher we were expecting after our first two hitters of the game but well take it. Should be six up if the Rays go down

Just heard Sweeny Murty on with Bro and Evan, they said MRI didnt show any damage. Did say anything about possible IL trip, just that his knee is sore.
I'm totally just guessing - but I think G will obviously get today off - and then we have the back to back off days for the London trip. After those 3 days off, I bet he'll be able to play in at least one of those games vs. BOS.
It doesn't sound like this is going to be another IL stint.

Old days and Sanchez would have blocked the plate and he would have been out - just sayin...

Anyway... let's go, Chappy!
Finish this shit off.
Chess match here. Gotta get him guessing on the wrong pitch.
I'd go outside fastball
Yanks win. Let's get this sweep before we head to London to kick the shit out of Boston.
Always fun
Yankees win!!!
.
Great pitching night.
23 over .500.
Sometimes you win easy. Sometimes you win tight. But in the end, all that matters is that you win.
Man, this team is so much fun to watch!
Just hope Stanton is OK
Have to give Chapman credit...he doesnt always have his best command and sometimes walks a tightrope, but he still gets the job done 99% of the time
Man, this team is so much fun to watch!
I always suspect thats related to the runner on 2nd signaling pitch or location to the hitter. Probably called the next pitch or two, or changed up the signals
Man, this team is so much fun to watch!
I think they were talking pitch sequence. Talking about attacking each of those batters. That was a serious talk. To me that was Gary learning and packing away information.
Well done, sir.

and Chappy were talking about at the end? Looked like they had a miscommunication.

It was definitely about the cross up on the last pitch. Like Mook said, Gary saw his life flash before his eyes there expecting slider but getting 102
Another solid win. Maybe not the laugher we were expecting after our first two hitters of the game but well take it. Should be six up if the Rays go down

Yup.
The guy has a body like Adonis, but appears to be made of glass, maybe it's nothing much.
They said it was a 'contusion', unless you hear the word tear, it shouldn't be much.
That game was tighter than it needed to be,
need those add on runs, have said it before.
The issue is his knee even though he got spiked,
not his hand.
How long was he out this season, prior to coming back?

Stanton has no swelling on the right knee, but the knee is sore and stiff. Boone said the Yankees will monitor him across the next few hours to see how he progresses. As of this moment, Boone said the team isnt making a roster move involving Stanton

Just heard Sweeny Murty on with Bro and Evan, they said MRI didnt show any damage. Did say anything about possible IL trip, just that his knee is sore.
It doesn't sound like this is going to be another IL stint.

Saw the lineup on RAB twitter - GS is out.
Weekend is probably a possibility, though.
