Ereck Flowers, Bobby Hart and John Jerry are penciled in as starters for teams in 2019. That should tell you how hard it is to find offensive linemen

There's no question that Odell Beckham Jr. is one of, if not, the most talented wide receivers in football but as much as people want to say Eli Manning held him back, evidence suggests that Eli makes WR's better not worse. All of his top targets had their best runs in New York.

Matt Mayer (@MatthewMayerCBS)
6/24/19, 2:42 PM
I get that there are other factors that are in play here ranging from injuries to self-inflicted gun shot wounds but I've yet to see one of Eli's top targets move on to another team & have a career year. Maybe Odell will be the first, but can't convince me these were all flukes

Matt Mayer (@MatthewMayerCBS)
6/25/19, 3:47 PM
Again it's extremely difficult to gauge this from 2014 on because Odell Beckham Jr. has been the guy ever since. My guess is OBJ's numbers will actually drop off and further enhance this argument playing alongside Jarvis Landry but again, a lot of factors here

Matt Mayer (@MatthewMayerCBS)
6/25/19, 10:21 PM
For those seeking more recent examples, it’s hard to provide given OBJ had been Eli’s guy but what I can tell you is Evan Engram had a 16-game average of 1,280 yards and 4 TD over the final four games of the 2018 season with Odell off the field. Eli picks a target and feeds him

Dan Schneier (@DanSchneierNFL)
6/25/19, 5:15 PM
Don’t you know you’re not allowed to say anything but Eli is the 45th best QB in the NFL and OBJ would’ve had 2K yards every year without him

Dan Schneier (@DanSchneierNFL)
6/25/19, 5:26 PM
For me, what bothers me most is the recency bias. For starters, a rapport between the QB and WR plays a key and subtle role in success. In addition to that, Eli had a nice stretch 2014-2015 with OBJ before defenses figured out what McAdoo was doing. I’m not an Eli defender, I’ve Called for him to be replaced for some time now, but at the same time, I don’t subscribe to the whole “black or white” “worst or best” arguments that don’t consider a grey area

Matt Mayer (@MatthewMayerCBS)
6/25/19, 5:30 PM
Yeah I'm not sure the stats tell us much other than that Eli was great in his prime. My initial lightbulb when compiling the info was that maybe OBJ will wind up being another receiver that fails without Eli or the first to succeed without him. Wasn't who should start right now

Matt Mayer (@MatthewMayerCBS)
6/25/19, 5:30 PM
That said, I can regretfully admit I'm part of the contingent that believes Eli has 2-3 more years left in the tank

Dan Schneier (@DanSchneierNFL)
6/25/19, 5:32 PM
Well see this is my point exactly. We differ on our opinion on Eli (I think he should’ve been replaced 2018) but at the same time we agree that a black or white assessment of him or any player doesn’t get us anywhere. Especially when some of these are not factoring all 2014-2018

Matt Mayer (@MatthewMayerCBS)
6/25/19, 5:36 PM
It's harder to sell 2014-18 because we don't really have a full season without OBJ to compare to where Eli could have a rapport with another WR as the number one guy but what we do know is that OBJ excelled under Eli into being one of the best wideouts in football

PHI should be very good this year, but, man, do I dislike Eagles fans and beat writers. When injuries hit them, as they will, I will not feel bad for them.
