Twitter is saying that the Habs are paying him $22M of the money up-front in year 1. So, while it's an easy match from a cap hit POV by CAR, their cheap ownership will find it painful to match this. Would love to see a stud like Aho leave the division.

Maybe this helps the Islanders negotiations with Lee? MTL's cap space will be tied up to Aho, so that takes away NYI's biggest competition for Lee? Or, maybe MTL felt that Lee was using them to leverage NYI and moved on? We'll see...

Now we wait to see if the Canes match.

I wonder if the Islanders would offersheet Brayden Point. As long as it is less than about $10.5M AAV it only means 2 1's, 2nd, and 3rd.

He's a really good player. I'd be all for that even if the cap hit and draft comp make it a huge gamble. I don't think the risk with going over 10.5 and getting into four firsts territory is worth it for anyone, even Marner.

FWIW, the early feeling around the hockey industry is that Carolina is certain to match Montreal's Sebastian Aho offer sheet. Which is the main reason we so rarely see them.

is the Canes have 7 days to match and like most teams (the handful of them that have had an offer sheet on one of their players) they'll take the full 7 days, which prevents MTL from doing other things until CAR matches, therefore MTL misses out on other FA/RFAs

Still worth it though, instead of paying Lee $8M I'd so much rather pay Aho $8M.

It's not the cap hit that's the issue with Aho - it's that he'll need to be paid out like 20M+ in bonuses within the first 12 months.

Kind of a sneaky good play by Bergevin, actually.

I think they have to pay him 11+ within 5 days after matching, too.

They're probably going to take their time since it'll leave MTL in salary limbo until it resolves.

Hearing that the Habs first discussed the offer sheet scenario involving Brayden Point but then shifted gears to Sebastian Aho after thinking they'd have a better chance to get the player. Both Point and Aho are represented by agent Gerry Johansson.
