John Shannon
@JSportsnet
The Blue Jackets are still trying to convince Artemi Panarin to return to Columbus. Still hoping theres a chance.
Looks like a 3 team race.
CBJ. NYI. Florida.
Renaud Lavoie

Hearing AAV could be $13M. Dont know if its the exact number but the biddings are high.
Seems like a fair deal for both sides...almost TOO fair in this market.

Totally agree, and he had every right to milk us for every penny after getting all starry-eyed for Panarin (congrats btw).
Isles still have a decent amount of cap room, and some very tradeable contracts to create another $8M or so of cap room (Leddy, Hickey), so I think Isles will try a trade to add another top 6 to the offense.

Yup, The Lee deal leaves open 5.5 mil in Cap room that they wouldn't have had with Panarin, so I think they need to go after a secondary asset with that money now. Someone like Dzingel.

Robin Lehner, who turned down NYIs offer of 2 years at 5 million per, is going to Chicago for 1 Year at the same amount.
#signingseason
I like that CHI is not so reliant on Crawford.
Good bet to bounce back and contend after a down year.

Hurricanes re-sign goaltender Petr Mrazek: $6.25M over 2 years. That's a $3.125M cap hit.

I don't get that decision by him at all.

Oof.
Wow, I am very high on Blackwood but I wish the Devils could have added him at that price.

Me either unless he felt this year being a backup/time share with Crawford can further establish his value for a long-term contract.
It doesn't make sense (if true). Never know what to believe with FA rumors.
I was fine with losing Lehner until the price tags came in.
Sorokin is a white whale.
Colorado is retaining 50 per cent of Barries annual average salary cap of $5.5 million.
They threw lehner aside while they tried to get the package of panarin/bob. Then they decided sorokins buddy was more important. Its a terrible look for the franchise considering nobody wants to be here except for Lehner and their own guys. Very frustrated. Im tired of the Trust Lou nonsense from my fellow delusional isles fans
Except Lehner doesnt have ties to Sorokin and has not proven he can start 50-60 games and everyday in postseason.

The Islanders gave Varlomov 4x5.... isn't that the exact contract Lehner wanted?

Why would you have any faith in Lou after that dismal season the Islanders had a year ago?

They offered Lehner 2/10 and I believe he wanted 12 or 14 on a 2 year deal. Islanders then moved on to Varlamov. I dont think they were ever giving Bob what he got from Florida.

Lehner was a Vezina finalist last year and only started like 5-6 fewer games than Varlomov did, no?
Seems like a clear downgrade to me.
Was the tie to Sorokin really that important ?
Lehner is younger, too.

Lets see....1)didnt upgrade the team at the deadline. 2)didnt upgrade the team this offseason so far while everyone else in the division has gotten better. 3)let the goalie who was a HUGE part of the success go. 4)gave Leo Komorov 4yr deal and now a POS gf beater varl a 4yr deal.
I trust the coach, i dont trust the gm that has done nothing since the salary cap came into play

Greisss numbers were not that different than Lehners. Varlamov has a better track record than Lehner had prior to last season. For the same money over the next 2 years Id take Varlamov over Lehner. The question is years 3 & 4. Who knows what backups will cost then? Also, we could use him as our exposed goalie in Expansion Draft.

He overplayed his hand after seeing what Bob got and like the MLB team that gets stuck having its AAA team in Las Vegas he got stuck with the only game in town that offered him any semblance of playing time on a competitive team
No question, but this is all the more reason to scratch your head over Varlamov.
When you have a goalie whisperer, and a system that suppresses high danger chances, you don't pay a 31 y/o domestic abuser 20 million for 4(!!) years.
The Devils are not a physically punishing team. Simmonds helps in that area but the Devils are built for speed nowadays. Shero loaded up on big physical defenseman in the draft (Okhotyuk, Misyul, Vukojevic, McCarthy) but all of them are a few years away.
The only defender with size is Severson but he isn't very physical. Subban should help there a bit but I would like to add another big, physical defenseman who excels in his own zone.

Also read the isles coaches wanted to trade for Varlamov last year but couldn't get something done.
Kdubs, part of me is skeptical, but I dont think the goalie situation is a big deal. Losing out on panarin was imo.
Next year well have sorokin and Varlamov splitting time

as a NYR fan, love the apparent talent Gorts has brought in but worried that NJD and others will be physically punishing. Rangers need some muscle up front and along rear guard

Jay sounds like the Devs might be in on Gusev from Vegas. They might take your idea of parking Clarkson's 5 mill+ here to lower the return.

I just saw that a second ago. That would be a very exciting gamble for the Devils. They could easily afford Clarkson's 1 year 5.25 cap hit which would significantly reduce the return.
I have been pushing for them to make a move like this but I wanted a guy like Tuch, Miller (Gone), or Haula(gone). Gusev would fill in nicely on the second line with Hughes and Bratt.

Yep had be an exciting piece to add in his prime. I've been all for using our cap space as a weapon in this type of scenario. Offer sheets to me are a waste of time. The team always matches. Maybe a guy like Laine you could work out a trade after the sheer us signed because Winnipeg can't afford everyone.
From the Athletic, so behind a pay wall, and I will only share a blurb.
I dont think it is easy for Carolina, Johannson said. I can tell you for sure, its not easy for Carolina. Anybody who says this is easy is wrong. You can armchair quarterback any decision, but I can promise you this is an aggressive move Its a lot of money, and its a lot of front-loaded money.
Who knows? Carolina is going to do what theyre going to do, but trust me, this is not an easy decision for them.
A disclaimer here on the source. Johannson is not one of those agents who is constantly using the media to pull strings in public. In fact, he makes a concerted effort to avoid the spotlight. This is the context of his comments at this critical moment for his client....

People need to remember he's a converted forward. I don't think he shies away from physical play, but he's not Dustin Byfuglien. Reminds me a little of Zach Werenski with his offensive zone play (very smooth and quick to activate, great vision and shot), but needs to work on defensive side (as expected), he's in the right place to learn IMO. I wouldn't be shocked if he joined the Rangers after the WI season ends.

AAV is a no brainer to match, but owner is a bit of a cheapskate so the front loaded bonus money might be an issue. That being said, if they don't match then teams will do the same to other Carolina RFA's in the future.

K'Andre at least a year away, and I have zero sense as to what his game is like, for all his size. Is he a gentle giant?

And apparently he is still growing. Sheesh
I think his game is (on the D side) positioning (easier with his >avg skating) and stick work, but I imagine he will use the body when necessary.
He wouldn't work with Torts, though -- he has a really long way to go to block shots. :)
