Will Daniel Jones replace Manning as the starting quarte& #65311;

Alex Len : 6/30/2019 10:53 pm
New York Giants Coach Pat Shurmur's last public address before the team enters the summer break is thought to imply that the Giants will have veteran Eli Manning and rookie Daniel Jones compete for starting quarterback positions in training camp.What do you think& #65311;
Yes.

I've loved Eli since he threw the pass to Toomer against Denver. That being said the best thing for the Giants long term is if Jones is so good as a rookie he can beat out a 2 time Superbowl MVP.
Not necessarily a bad question come Fall but....

Eli is the team's starting QB now and will be unless something changes drastically. No point in going there in June.

Id just start Jones and get it over with. Have Eli spend the year being Yoda to Joness Luke. By mosts accounts this isnt the year we expect to compete for a championship. What good would trotting Eli our for another year of meh football. Atleast with Jones we can say were working towards something.

I remember the Giants beating 13-0 Broncos with Kent Graham at QB. 1997? Not sure about Eli-->Toomer over Denver. Could be though.

Jones is simply a better fit for Shurmer's system.

The talk is PR to appease a fan base that threw a temper tantrum the last time Eli was on the bench. We had grown men crying over dinner. It was ugly.

In fairness to many of us who were pissed, it was more about the way Eli was benched (or his benching of himself) and the insertion of Geno Smith rather than Webb that rankled, not the benching per se.

the best play in that game was earlier in that drive when Manning avoided the rush, rolled out and found Plax for a first down.

That's the Manning we've missed. He's always been fairly stationary, but finding the open guy after buying a few extra seconds was a key backdrop to many of his best plays.

appeasing the fan base
fkap : 7/1/2019 9:14 am : link
to sooth the pain of benching Eli would be akin to fighting the last war instead of the one at hand.

The shock and fan outrage of sitting Eli has already happened. That ship already sailed and no need to fight that battle again.

If anything, the campaign would be to sooth the fans who were upset Jones was chosen. The PR has certainly been amped up to allay fears about his arm strength.

Maybe the silent majority feels otherwise, but my take on the pulse of fan site BBI is that folks are more than ready to put Eli in the rear view mirror. the furor would be more about NOT sitting him.
No. No, the rookie will not replace the HOF QB...
x meadowlander : 7/1/2019 9:20 am : link
...not immediately, likely not this season, barring injury.

There's no point to it. Smart money ALWAYS says you DON'T throw rookie QB's in the deep end of the pool. You ease them in working 2nd team, some 4th quarter snaps in blowouts. You get them to thoroughly learn the system so when they DO finally play, they don't wind up looking like Eli did in 2004.

FWIW, we dodged bullets for years not having a quality backup behind E. Each year he got older, less mobile, more prone to injury - nice to finally have a good spare tire in the trunk!

I disagree with this presented as an absolute. Practice and preseason will matter. Shurmur is on the hot seat for his head coaching life. Another shit season and he will never get another HC position. IF Shurmur feels Jones will give him a better chance to win, he will start him day 1. Unless you are suggesting there is mandate from ownership that Eli must play.

I dont often disagree with you, but I do here. Eli is starting until and if he shits the bed imo..With Jones here, I think Shurmur buys more time here even with a lousy season. The hierarchy knows that with DJ here its a process. Shurmur is highly qualified to develop this guy whenever that comes to pass, even if hes not, at this point, the perfect HC to lead the team moving forward.

fkap : 7/2/2019 11:24 am : link
Shurmur is in a sticky situation. The organization has been shitty for so long, progress needs to be shown. It's going to be a fine line in how the QB situation is handled. The org wants wins. The press wants to sell clicks, and will do its best to create controversy. The fans are fickle and will turn on the team if S rides Eli too long, or inserts Jones too early, and either produces losses. It's a dangerous minefield S has to walk through, on top of all the other HC decisions to make. Riding Eli as long as he doesn't shit the bed could easily go either way.

Those are very good points, you might be correct. If I were Shurmur and I thought Jones would run my offense better than Eli and be more productive in it I would start him right away. I think Jones needs to show progress in camp and games. I appreciate your response, you are one of the good ones.

I don't think it's as straightforward as others do
jcn56 : 7/2/2019 11:42 pm : link
The optics seem simple - the Giants fanbase is hungry for a winning season sooner than later, and that might result in pressure on Shurmur to start producing Ws.

I think barring an unexpected event - Eli falling off a cliff or getting hurt, or the team unraveling in McAdoo fashion - that Shurmur has been told 2019 is developmental and he doesn't have to produce wins, just steady progress across the roster. I think the Giants management sees this as Eli's farewell season, and barring one of the situations above will let him ride it out. We'll see quotes like 'he's not ready' (paraphrasing coachspeak we'll inevitably hear) about Jones.

With an improved OL Eli should keep the wheels from coming totally off, and the Giants will likely have another losing season that isn't a total catastrophe, maybe in the 6-8 wins category.
jcn
fkap : 7/3/2019 6:14 am : link
I agree that the season begins with Eli as starter unless he stinks up the joint, but assuming a so-so W-L record, as the season goes on he has to do more than not suck. Management will give him the benefit of the doubt, but it would be stupid to be so sentimental as to let him start at the expense of getting Jones playing time. It would be much kinder to Eli to pull him rather than let him face the wrath of a growing fan base who want to see the new toy. Not out of the question that he could hear crass boos in such a scenario.

I think that IF the OL improves, Eli will play well, but if he only doesn't suck, the season ends with him on the bench, or IR.
