NFT: Ever faint or blackout? (sans drinking)

Giantology : 7/1/2019 5:15 pm
Last night I had my first real health scare in my 33 years on this planet. A little background, I strained my calf badly playing basketball over a week ago and have been limping and suffering since. All day yesterday, I was anxious that I might have a formed a blood clot, because the swelling and pain in my calf had actually gotten worse after a couple days of minor improvement.

Cut to late last night, I'm exhausted, still anxious and worried and struggling on my feet. I'm taking a piss and starting to feel light headed. I lean over to flush and instead just blackout/faint. I come to with my wife banging on the bathroom door, calling 911, and me struggling to speak or breathe and trying to make sense of what just happened. Fortunately I was able to convince her to take me to the ER instead of calling for an ambulance once I recovered a little.

All the tests came back normal - no clots forming or formed, no heart/BP issues, clean x-ray, etc. So it is currently a mystery, though I still think I gave myself a panic attack.

Anyone else experience a random fainting or blackout? Anxiety/panic driven or medical or otherwise? What was your experience like diagnosing or treating?

Ironically, my calf feels better today. My wallet on the other hand, is already hurting thanks to the impromptu ER visit and from cracking the tank of our toilet when I fell last night.
Did you end up pissing all over yourself?

No, thankfully 😅 I had already finished and pulled my shorts up. Still got dinged by the mrs for not flushing or putting the seat down though
Yep...diagnosed vasovagal syncope. Blacked out after feeling

light headed after eating. Got up to get fresh air. Went outside and out I went. When I didn't return right away my wife followed me to see me getting back on my feet. Restaurant called 911. Hospital ran tests and three doctors came up with the same conclusion. I was told never stand up when you're feeling light headed. Sit or lay down. This diagnosis I was told was very common after eating. They told me it would probably never happen again but it was quite common. They actually held me over night. They ran EKG tons of blood work and blood pressure with follow up with my regular physician who told me the same thing. Not saying this is what happened to you. Hopefully your hospital ran all the tests on you.
Seriously

stay diligent for any other issues. May just be an anomaly but sounds like a scary experience (and costly). Health is everything.
On another note after this happened I couldn't believe how many people

I know experienced this same thing. But if you're not comfortable with what the doctor(s) at hospital told you get more tests etc.
Have fainted twice.
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 7/1/2019 5:39 pm : link
Tests showed I was dehydrated. That's why I drink a helluva lot of water.
On a commercial flight...

in my early 40's and in excellent health. I was starting to feel a nauseous and got up to go to the lavatory. When I got to the door, it was occupied and that was the last thing I remembered before waking up flat on my back in the aisle being smacked in the face by the flight attendant. First and last time this ever happened. Thankfully, they didn't divert the plane and the rest of the flight was awkward, but uneventful.

Turned out to be a stress related response. At the time, I was working 18 hour days/7 days a week and doing a lot of travel back an forth (sometimes several trips in a week) to different remote areas in Alaska. I got a full check-up and the doctors were much less concerned than I was... Their solution was to work less. Thinks did slow down at work and it never happened again, but it was a very humbling experience.

Exact same here - I was blown away by how many nurses/doctors told me that it is a fairly normal occurrence.

Thanks for the advice. They ran the exact same tests on me as they did you (ekg, BP, bloodwork) which all came up normal so they recommended I see my primary care physician to follow up.

Did you ever faint or pass out again besides that one time?

Oh wow. I'm glad I was home, can't imagine how weird and awkward it would be on a commercial flight or in the middle of public.

Stress is a killer so I'm not surprised, I honestly feel I was stressing myself out over having a blood clot so I still want to blame it on that. Glad to hear you haven't had to deal with it again!

Definitely. My wife has been watching me like a hawk and making sure I'm okay constantly.

Health absolutely is everything - I just wish it wasn't so heavily profit based in this country.
As in Infantry Company Commander in front of my company
TomMac : 7/1/2019 5:57 pm : link
At Fort Lewis Washington getting ready to “deploy” to California. They lost my shot records and had to give me about ten shots one after the other. About shot 9 I felt things getting dark and I started to go down in slow motion. Don’t think I ever went out completely but it was like I was looking through a pin hole with voices in the distance saying, “Sir are you ok?” I was up in a minute or two. My troops got a kick out of it. Since then I always take needles sitting down.
I used to get light-headed

No I did not. And that's what they told me. Follow up with my physician which I did and he said the exact same thing the hospital did. Again I had an ER doctor tell me, the hospital doctor tell me once I was admitted and a Cardiologist who came in to see me tell me and once released my primary physician tell me so I was pretty confident in what they said. I'd do the follow up with your physician as they recommended though as I did.

Believe it or not that can trigger it from what I understand. Mine was just after eating.
Had a bunch of problems
Dankbeerman : 7/1/2019 7:39 pm : link
last summer. never accutally passed out but felt like I was going down a few times. Test all came back good except for some borderline cholesterol. Had a lot of digestive issues too and couldnt seperate them from my anxiety attacks. still dont know which caused which but have changed up my diet with great results.

was not getting the right fiber in my diet as I was a low carb eater. lots of meat cheese and veggies.

Have learned to eat lots of oats, brown rice and beans. Additionaly am taking fish oil and tummeric and on and off adding probiotics.

Have felt so much better and anxiety is so less physically impactful reduced overall.

Micturition syncope or post-micturition syncope is the name given to the human phenomenon of fainting shortly after or during urination. The underlying cause is not fully understood but it may be a result of vasovagal response, postural hypotension, or a combination thereof.

This happened to me a couple years ago. Busted up my face a bit..

Sounds like from Section125's response that you may have resign yourself to peeing while sitting down. The good thing is that your wife won't have a reason to bitch about you leaving the seat up.
In MY opinion you took a risk driving to the ER.
KeoweeFan : 7/1/2019 9:09 pm : link
In many locals, you can turn down an ambulance ride (and incur no cost) after the EMTs or Paramedics check you out following a 911 call. If it turned out to be either a cardiac problem or a stroke you may have wasted valuable time - minutes count!
In addition to the drive time you have to factor in the inevitable wait in the ER before you are assessed.

(This is a good thing to verify in your area. Another important piece of data is the actual response time from call to arrival for the ambulance in your neighborhood. That info should be available.)

I am a county Rescue Commissioner in SC and worked for years as an EMR (a first responder on scene prior to ambulance arrival). In many of my 911 calls with ambulance response, transport was determined by the EMT to not be required and the PT was not charged.)

Don't ever take chances with your health to save the cost of an ambulance ride.

That's why hotels used to have telephones in bathrooms.
(Conversely, some heart attack symptoms lead people to believe they have to throw up or relieve themselves.)
hope you feel better, but in the mean time....

It was right after the Giants made their pick in this year’s draft.
Yup, sounds to me like vasovagal syncopy or postural hypotension,
yatqb : 7/1/2019 9:51 pm : link
as section said.

My wife fainted while feeling a bit under the weather, and after having had one drink once. My friend, who happened to be the doctor on call that night, met us at the ER, and took her BP while she was lying down and then as she was in the process of standing back up. Huge drop during the episode. It was nice to find out it was a relatively common occurrence, especially with people like my wife whose BP is usually a bit on the low side.
I fainted

As sad as it sounds, after getting stitches from that incident, I do sit when I pee at night...beats waking up on the floor!
Giantology..... do you suffer from anxiety?
GMAN4LIFE : 7/2/2019 8:19 am : link
i believe you gave yourself a panic attack. This happened to me once.

You probably were taking in too much air at the time and you didnt notice. its ok man. if everything came back normal after getting checked out, thats more than likely what it was.

I don't normally, no. I've only had one other panic attack that I can recall in my life, more than 7 years ago, but I did not black out or faint from it.

That was my best guess as to what happened, too, but based on some posts on this thread and after reading what the ER doctor noted in my discharge report, it is a real possibility that I had a Micturition syncope episode. The human body is insane.

its possible but no one is a doctor here. At least i dont think haha.

take care of yourself.
I used to get seizures
BestFeature : 7/2/2019 9:47 am : link
That's part of the deal when it comes to seizures. But there are other "fun" parts to it. It's pretty brutal. My dad fainted when his uncle was getting buried due to stress, grief, and heat. But nothing really out of the ordinary happened, just went to the hospital.
About a year ago I didn't faint but got really lightheaded and shit...
BestFeature : 7/2/2019 9:50 am : link
...started spinning. It scared the shit out of me. I think it might have been from overeating and and having too much sugar. Never quite had that feeling before or since.
