@JesseSanchezMLB: Source: #Yankees agree to a deal in $5 million range with outfielder Jasson Dominguez, #1 on @MLBPipeline’s Top 30 Int’l Prospects list. https://atmlb.com/2XMDnoy
Figured a lot of Yankees fans would be excited about this move. I've seen people say he's the next Mike Trout. Also seen him compared to Mickey Mantle.
But it's a long road from age 16 to MLB. I can remember back when the Yankees signed the teenaged Jackson Melian and he was supposed to be the second coming of Mickey Mantle. Didn't work out that way.
By all accounts, he's much more physically developed than you usual see with the top internationals at 16. Different body type, shorter and more muscular, than the top guys that are often tall and lanky with more projection required as we wait to see how they fill out.
Now that could work against him, as maybe his growth is limited. But it sounds like there's a bit less projection with Dominguez. Doesn't mean the Trout comp is spot on. But take it for what it's worth.
Have you got that right? I think the phrase is sorta "all or nothing." The possibility exists that Jasson Dominguez does NOT live up to all the hype but still performs quite well at the Major League level!

Posted this yesterday from ESPN. Specifically mentions Melian

This is not like the days of Jackson Melian, a hyped Yankees prospect from Venezuela who never made the major leagues. The conviction is stronger, the signings seen less as gambles and more as investments. It's what invites the comparisons -- that they're not based on physique or some other intangible alone.
"Jasson has a game that's very much like Mike Trout -- except he's a switch-hitter," said Ivan Noboa, Dominguez's trainer in the Dominican Republic. "It's a hard name for me to say, because it's really high expectations for a 16-year-old. But what Jasson is we all know. I know it's a little bit unfair to put them next to each other. It's a heavy weight to carry. But if someone can do it, it's him."
Who knows how it plays out. A few recent international big spendings for us haven't worked out. It's always a risk, but 5 million is a drop in the bucket for the potential reward. Link - ( New Window )
Franco is similarly built and is a flat out stud. There is no telling if Dominguez’s hit tool is equal, but we haven’t had someone this highly regarded since....Jesus Montero.....gulp. Hope he pans out.
In the past, I always assumed some of these top Latin players were really 2-3 years older than their stated age (Pujols has accidentally admitted he’s really 2 years older a couple times), but I don’t know if that’s still possible.

Before Dominguez was born in February 2003, his father, Felix Dominguez, and his mother, Dorca Gonzalez, were trying to settle on a name. His dad had the perfect one: Jasson, like Jason Giambi. Yes, Felix Dominguez, an enormous Yankees fan, really did name his son after Jason Giambi, and, yes, that second "s" really is superfluous and it's pronounced like Jason.
"In related moves, infielder Mike Ford and left-hander Nestor Cortes Jr. were recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, while right-hander Chance Adams was optioned to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre."
some of these kids take "stay hungry" way too literally, especially when they go from abject poverty to being multi-millionaires. The list of busts is long and storied. But depending on who you ask (and there are doubters - Law, for instance, thinks he has elite talent but not "generational" talent) he has some of the best now tools anyone has seen in the memory of 7/2.
Law is also the guy who insisted to everyone that Severino was a reliever and that Rosario was going to be better than Torres. He may always state his opinions with conviction- but remember that the track record is not clean.
Law admits he does not scout international players.... Â
so his opinion is based on others opinions....and is pretty meaningless here. I say this as a pretty big fan of Law in general. Also not that Law does not have any formal training as a scout.
Unlike some of the national pub guys he does actually have FO experience, and his take is usually based less on Youtube than on chatter from other scouts and FO guys he does talk to. Doesn't mean he's right, but anonymous scout gushing and anonymous scout dialing down the hyperbole carry roughly the same weight.
Right, give a 16-year old $5M+ and trust he is going to behave for a year before showing up. I don't know anything about how mature this kid is, but at 16 had someone handed me that much cheddar and given that much time, I would have been in big trouble.
He's not gonna show up next year. I'm sure he'll be in Tampa training Â
in Vlad's case it remains suspect but it didn't hamper his offensive development. But yeah, Maitan was extremely hyped.
His weight problem was considered baby weight but he was expected to have to move to 3B because he was outgrowing SS. His bat was supposed to be very advanced. He has been downright awful so far.
they have to get locked up so early that even the signing teams don't get a ton of looks at them. So you're offering a 14 year old a couple million dollars and expecting him to weather adolescent changes to his body and physical abilities and still emerge an elite prospect on the other side. It is not uncommon for a 15 year old to post below average run times and then above average or even better as an 18 year old; but just as skills can pop up they can also diminish too.
How's that? A guy with 70-grade speed has a lot of intermediate outcomes.
I don't think your using the context of "boom or bust" properly at all.
As I said on the futures thread, if the comp is Mickey Mantle, I hope he's not Ross Moschitto!
From almost all accounts, this kid is one of the most highly regarded to come out of the DR in some time.
Hey I liked Kevin Maas....for 4 whole months...

It always is. Mickey Mantle, Mike Trout, whoa nellie.
Indeed it is.

Crap. Any word on what they say he has wrong with him?

Luke Voit to the 10-day IL. I guess the injury curse is still alive and well.

Thanks.
No HR Derby for Luke ... I'm not sad about that.

I guess. He'll only miss five games that way

Great point. At least his swing won't get screwed up while he's out.

There is still time obviously but as a 19 year old in Low A Maitan is batting .208/.268/.299 with a 30% K rate.
