Walker NO Advocate: NO native Eli Manning plenty motivated

Defenderdawg : 7/3/2019 8:50 am
in Year 16...

"They've been doing some losing lately, and he doesn't like it and he wants to turn that around," Archie Manning said. "Eli realizes the situation. They drafted a young quarterback. They've got to win some games. He knows that. But he's attacking it full speed. Eli has a great mindset to be a quarterback and a football player. He knows he can play at a high level, and he thinks he can lead his team so we're pulling hard for him."

Manning expects giant strides, especially since it'll be his second season in offensive coordinator Mike Shula's system.

It'll be the first time since 2013 Manning won't have fellow Newman alum Odell Beckham Jr. to throw to. Beckham was traded to the Cleveland Browns, one of several major moves the Giants made.

"We've been aggressive in the offseason and made some change," Manning said. "We brought in some new linemen, brought in (receiver) Golden Tate and also made some defensive moves as well. I'm excited about the way the spring worked and having guys to fit the offense and fit this style. It's going to be fun."

Those close to Eli know just how determined he is to help the Giants turn things around. They know what drives him.

A lot of times people ask guys 'What are you going to do with the money you made?' Peyton Manning said. "Instead of saying, 'I'm going to buy this or buy that,' they should say 'l'm going to try to earn it.' Go earn it, and I think that's what Eli feels."

Eli says his motivation is simple.

Winning football games is what he says drives him.

"It's such a great feeling in that locker room when you win games," Eli said. "You want everybody to experience that. You want those guys who haven't won a championship to get that feeling also. That means so much to your family and everybody who has been a part of your football career, from your high school coaches to your college coaches. When you win a championship, everybody wins."

So Manning wants to stick around as long as he can.

He laughed at the notion of playing another eight or nine years, which would allow him to possibly play with his nephew Arch, Cooper's son and a freshman at Newman. Eli knows he's probably closer to joining big brother Peyton in retirement than he is of playing against Lil Arch.

But he's not looking that far ahead either.

"I'm not rushing into retirement, and Peyton's not telling me to rush into it," Eli said. "I still love being around the guys and the teammates and playing this game. I'm going to play it for as long as I think I can hang with these guys."

I like the switching to topics that either:

A) Dont make sense
B) No one ever said
C) Making up shit cause they have been exposed

I am convinced there are posters (on this thread mainly) that rather see Eli fail than Eli succeed.

This post makes 0 sense because its not even remotely true and its a sad attempt to be funny. Sad thing though, is the poster actually believes this.

I would not call our WR's "above average" and our TE "Elite".

Our WR's are AVERAGE. The TE has POTENTIAL, but has not backed up his draft position so far.

Our RB is awesome and will be even better. Based on this and the improved OL, we have a shot at Top 10. But it is not a gimmee.

I think 11 teams have a better WR group
CIN, CLE, HOU, LAC, OAK, ARI, ATL, GB, LAR, MIN, TB,

Hard pressed to stretch that to 16, so "above avg" seems right

Your thoughts welcome

and as far as TE - i said above avg - to elite. stand by that.

These are some of the most innocent quotes from Eli. He wants to win. He is excited for year 2. He thinks highly of his teammates.

Yet the SAME posters come to this thread just to shit on Eli as if he did something wrong. Shit, he didnt even throw a game changing INT in the first quarter yet - and people cant help themselves.

The people who shit on Eli on even positive threads are frankly desperate people who need to move on.

A guy coming to an Eli thread where to shit on him where he wants to win shouldnt come after someone and said he has issues. You root against the QB of the team you supposedly root for and claim I have issues? LOL, think about that for a second.

If my biggest issue is rooting for a player on my team, then I am doing ok.
It’s not even a big deal anymore anyway.

We’re on the cusp of a new era for giants football in 2020. I don’t think anyone thinks elibsaid anything wrong here. He didn’t. But when the team has been trash for the last 7 years; stuff like this kind of goes in one ear and out the other.

GiantGrit : 7/3/2019 12:31 pm : link
Most of the posts on this thread have been too bad regarding Eli. I've read worst. The nature of sports in NY - what have you done for me lately? The Giants, and Eli, haven't done anything. Do i think its right he is often lambasted? I do not, as i've posted countless times many factors out of his control kept the team from contending. Now he's old.

Kinda like some Knicks fans who keep saying "why the Nets? The Knicks are bigger?"

Yes, the Knicks are bigger and more popular. But the fans are more representative of the culture here - they love their teams, but patience lacks. Guys would rather enjoy the city and not have to deal with those kind of fans. Is it mentally weak? Good argument it is, but if someone knows they don't want to handle that BS, why put yourself in a situation where you'll have to?

Leading me back to Eli. He chose New York, he's dealt with the media masterfully. He helped lead the Giants to one of the biggest upsets in sports. 4 years later, he told the world he was elite - he was laughed at. He then produced his best season ever AND won a title again. Totally backed up his talk. He walked the walk.

So, is Eli Manning declining? Yes. Are fans within their right to point this out and clamor for the new era? Yes.

But the reality is, many posters on here have already forgotten how awesome this guys career was. He WANTED New York, and he delivered 2 titles (with help of course). Don't sneeze at that. For one last time, i hope he reminds everyone how fortunate we were to have him as our quarterback. His clutchness may not walk through the doors here for awhile.

People who have coached and played the position. When I read what Eli should or shouldnt do - the majority of BBI posters dont know what they are talking about.

There are a lot of things I dont try to stick my chest out over like OL play, salary cap issues, LB play etc.... and how the players or GMs should do their job cause I dont know much about it.

Its ok to discuss or ask questions.... but to definitively say you are right on a topic on something you dont know or never did is kind of funny, no?

He doesnt need Eli threads to shit on Eli. He pretty much does it on any thread he wants. Just look for the 1 PM and 4 PM game threads or the MNF or TNF threads where somerandom QB throws a TD. He will basically slobber over them as a way to say Eli cant do that. He even admits he does it. He has been doing it for a dozen years. He rather see Eli suck this year so he doesnt have to watch him play in 2020.

Most Giants fans want Eli to start next year because it means:

A) he had an awesome year
B) The giants had a great year too.

Dave isnt one of those posters. If you ask him what he rather have..... Daniel Jones starting in 2020 or the Giants win the SB with Eli in 2019, he would choose the former. He'll deny it but his history of posting and shitting on Eli would support my claim.
But Ill let

So somewhere between 10-11 INTs good for you?
There was a point at which Parcells told Simms "If you don't throw two interceptions today, you're not taking enough chances." Less than one INT/game would be ok if the offense is high-scoring. We haven't seen a truly high-scoring O from the Giants in what, decades?

What's "fucking ponderous" is that this is a fan website but if a fan's opinion isn't in line with yours, they have to be a moron. Give me a break.

If it were any other player on this team - if Nate Solder came out and said "I want to earn my contract," I want to win more games," etc., and some fans said "hey, you can talk all you want, but how about you just play better," you would have no problem with it. But you have such an irrational hard on for Eli, that you actually get upset when people criticize him.

Get over it.

The problem is, it doesn't take a fucking rocket surgeon to figure out that:
A) His line has sucked for 8 years. Literally bottom of the league for how many years now.
B) His running game has sucked for about that long
C) He is in his 3rd offensive system in 4 years

Ah fuck it, maybe it does take a rocket surgeon.

At the end of the day, instead of shitting on one guy on the offense over and over and over again, let's see what he does in year 2 of Shurmur's system with an actual offensive line in front of him.

Yes.Tops just like last year but unfortunetly 14,15 and higher, for an elite QB which is what I like to consider him, is not. Look, we're going to miss him when he's gone but what I've always considered what keeps him from being listed as a top 5 QB every year is his interceptions.
There are a few questions to be answered this season.
BlueLou'sBack : 7/3/2019 2:34 pm : link
1) Can Eli still play at a high level?
2) Is the Giants OL really fixed now to at least a league average level?
3) How much will OBJ be missed?
4) Can Engram stay healthy and be productive for at least 14/16 games?
5) Is there a deep threat WR on this roster who can be counted on AT ALL?

And IMO, the most important one:

6) Are Eli Manning's skills a decent fit for Pat Shurmur's offense featuring Saquon Barkley and (IMO) Evan Engram?

Eli can still be pretty darn good, but not really satisfy #6. IE, what happens to a vertical deep ball thrower in horizontally based offense?
Hope Eli lights it up this year.

I think whoever QBs the Giants in 2019 is going to do well. I can't imagine Eli not playing much better than we have recently seen with this OL and Barkley. I would prefer to play Jones as I don't think we are winning anything this year and a year of experience for Jones is valuable to me. That said, I will be VERY happy if Eli gets a chance to throw some shade at his detractors. It will change the entire narrative on the end of his career if he can have a great season this year.
I think the point is, that it’s nothing about his play

The comments were not critique. They were not cogent, they were not intelligent, they were not relevant, they were not mature, they indicated nothing of any football acumen or even every day sentience.

They were simply the same old, gratuitous, “what do you want for dinner? ...Eli sucks,....it’s raining outside....Eli sucks” froth that is the not just the sum, but the entirety of conversation contribution.

If the refrain were maybe saved for a game or for even a relevant point, maybe they would at least have meaning, if not novelty.

BBI's best sometimes isnt as good as Eli's worst. Thats pretty much a fact.

I mean, we could all be realistic about the motives behind any player paying lip service to "I just want to win" and ignore the underlying message of "I've made a shit ton of money playing this game and I'd like to continue making that money" but that might require a departure from hero worship, so why bother?

I mean, don't guys who just want to win occasionally restructure their contract to help the team build their supporting cast?

You're right, he did. Once, in 2012, coming off his best season and a Super Bowl MVP. You could make a case that he had as much leverage at that point as any other in his career, and he chose to help the team. Granted, he still got every cent he was owed; it was just converted to bonus from salary, but that's generally how it happens. I stand corrected.

Still, I think it might have been helpful the past few years to rework his contract to give him the help he clearly needed. But I'm not privy to whether the team ever even approached him about anything like that so it's not fair to blame him for it without enough information.
What help do they clearly need?

Overspend on FAs like 2016 that turned out to be a monumental bust.

Who could we have signed? The fact is the team got this way with poor drafting, dumb FA signings, hanging onto players for too long, and poor coaching.

Not one player not restructuring. Plus, the last time he did that.... our franchise went down the tubes and are in one of our worst eras ever.

But yeah, Elis not a team player for that. Good call!

JFC I said I stood corrected. Sorry for insulting your fucking crush.

But you and several others have been quick to point out how neglected Eli's supporting cast has been as part of the explanation for his declining performance over the past few years. Guess what? It's a salary cap league. Additional cap space could at least have given the team additional opportunities to get Eli some support.

And are you trying to suggest that Eli restructuring was some sort of bad luck moment? You're a weird dude.

I think it’s weird you calling Eli selfish over the last 6-7 years, even though his contract had no bearing on us signing any free agent we wanted. Or maybe you forgot the 200 million plus we spent in 2016.

But I’m sure you will tell us many times during the year that Eli will make more money than any NFL player ever (which will be short lived by the way) and proclaim he wasn’t worth it. That beat has been going on for years strong, amirite?

No, you're weird for a shit ton of reasons, the most recent of which is suggesting that Eli agreeing to restructure his contract in 2012 represented some sort of turning point in the franchise's fortune, as though it all could have been avoided if they had just left that money as salary instead of converting it to bonus. If that was too difficult to understand, maybe a different adjective fits instead of just weird.

and Luck. 19 QBs threw 11 or more, including Eli (11).

What more do you want Eli to do?

I would be happy with 16 and 32+ TDs if the team was putting up 30 points per game. That didn’t happen last year because the offense struggled in the first half.
9-7 last year at a minimum

If the defense could hold a 2 minute lead.

Eli had a fine year.

Especially since that browns WR took the $$, barely showed up, then quit.

Some people, myself included, have been too tough on Eli at times. But I feel as though you are incapable of being critical of his play and lash at anyone who dare say that his play be commensurate with his play. In the event Eli plays poorly and Jones thrives with the same cast of characters would you then consider conceding that Eli’s eroding skills may have been part of the problem?

I'll defend dep here and disagree. We all know Eli is in the twilight, but the incessant bashing drives people like dep (and me) absolute bat shit so we point out the obvious over and over again. There's a (very good) reason Reese and Ross are not here anymore running the show. And frankly they should have been shown the door before Coughlin (or Gilbride for that matter). This franchise (Reese and Ross specifically) wasted many prime years of a great NY Giants QB. It's sickening after all the guy has done here to hear people shit on the guy over and over again for all of the offensive woes over the last few years.
Thank God for Eli

he made Kerry Collins a distant memory and replaced Kurt Warner on the field. Those two were close to done. But that is the state of Eli today

If the team failed Eli the past few years with the poor OL I wonder if the same could be said for Russell, Rodgers , Rivers etc. In this day and age a QB needs to bring more to the table then Eli does
I’m curious to see how he plays this year

Actually looking forward to seeing how it plays out. This team is not there yet, but they have enough to be competitive and a light schedule on paper. Its going to be interesting.

Bullshit. And it's not just OL. It was just OL when Coughlin was still here. If you didn't notice the offense completely changed when Coughlin was shown the door. Rivers and Rothlisberger have had the same coaching staffs and offenses for how long? And Rivers has a fantastic coordinator in Whisenhunt. Eli has not only had shit OL for 8 years, he is in his 3rd offensive scheme in 4 years.

The main point is and has always been that that s completely irrelevant to the story and the thread, which are both simply about him saying he’s motivated for the upcoming season.

But it turned into another springboard, as if any topic didn’t catalyze the radical, for the tired, incessant diatribe of anti-Eli invective by the scurrilous.
