NFT: Congrats John Sterling

Neckbone1333 : 7/4/2019 9:31 am
Happy Birthday and congrats on your first day off as Yankees’ broadcaster.

Say why you want about him, but he is a class act.

He will miss the entire Rays series and then have the All Star break off. They are saying he has lost weight and his energy sapped. I get this, but I am hoping there isn’t more wrong with him health wise, that isn’t being talked about.

Enjoy the time off and get well, John!

Frank Messer, Bill White, and the Scooter. I loves those guys and they are and will always be my gold standard. That said, I enjoy Sterling and Kay. I don't understand the hate.
Isn't he like 85

I'm not a big fan, but 30 years without a game off is damned impressive.

Ditto. I know a lot don't like Kay, who I don't mind. But, he was really the only partner that made Sterling listenable. Every other pairing has been horrendous.

Same here with the guys you mentioned. They are my gold standard as well.

I hope Sterling is ok health wise but the dislike of him comes from the fact he is terrible at his job. He does not describe the actual game action well on radio and that's supposed to be his number one priority, He calls a game on radio like we are watching it on tv, and forgets he's supposed to be our eyes to the game.

Ever notice how long he goes sometimes without giving the score or game situation? He's much more concerned with trying to entertain us with his endless babbling about nonsense. Not to mention how many mis calls he makes a year, which trust me are numerous.

If I have to hear him say "we don't have a monitor here in the booth" one more time I think I'll chuck my radio. My reaction is always the same....hey John, I don't have one in my truck, work or at the beach either!

Unfortunately for me I end up having to listen to his radio broadcast probably close to half the games a year and I can't tell you how frustrating he is to listen to. I'm not even gonna get into his schtick with his HR calls as I know people either love or hate that. Me, it's too much about him and not about the action but honestly that's the least of my problems with him.

Just call the damn action accurately and I can deal with all the rest.
The homer calls are silly, but I don't mind them
Greg from LI : 7/4/2019 10:01 am : link
The real problem is that he simply doesn't tell the listener what is going on, and when he does bother to do that, his calls are frequently gone.
question
Giantsfan79 : 7/4/2019 10:10 am : link
right now the only broadcasters in Monument Park are Mel Allen (100% broadcaster) and Phil Rizzuto (player + broadcaster).

Does John Sterling become #3? I sorta feel yes FWIW.
I remember him doing Islander games back in the day too..

I get it...I listen mostly on radio as well (Sirius, I live in VA) and I agree it's tough at times. Luckily the radio displays score and situation at all times so it works for me, lol. I wouldn't say he became lazy, but certainly he's become entrenched in his ways. Probably doesn't even realize it. And yes the home run calls are laughable at this point.
Higashioka the home run stroka was awesome though

I wish him a speedy recovery

to be followed by a speedy retirement. You have to listen to some other teams radio broadcasts to realize just how bad Sterling and Suzyn "the human cliche machine" Waldman are at the broadcasts.

The Yanks need to seriously take a look at their broadcasting crew. It's time to send Ma and Pa Pinstripe out to pasture.

Haha, Yeah that's definitely cringe worthy. It's no Burn Baby Burn that's for sure. Lol.

When he started them they were entertaining for me and good for a laugh. Now like Didi's call most are cringe worthy, and none worse than Stanton's IMO. To me that's all about Sterling and his ego, ( as most now seem to be) and not a fun or spontaneous reaction call of a HR.

That said, I do wish him good health and hope he's ok, but I won't miss him if this is his last year, which I really hope it is.
Been listening to Sterling and the Yankees since 1970
Ron from Ninerland : 7/4/2019 11:55 am : link
Back then Phil Rizzoto , Bill White and Frank Messer did the Yankee broadcasts, but John Sterling had one of the very first radio talk shows back then. His personality was very different than it is now. Lets just say John Sterling of the 70's makes Mike Francessa look calm and sedate.

Back to the Yankees, in those days the announcers split the play by play duties. Scooter did three innings, Frank did three innings and Bill White did three innings. Whitey Ford occasionally did color. Even early in Sterling's Yankee career he split play by play with his co host. Now of course he does every inning of every game, all while the games got longer and split double headers became commonplace. What he has accomplished is truly remarkable. To be able to do what he does at age 81, I can't imagine I'd have the stamina and I'm 20 years younger.

I hope that when John Sterling finally packs it in, he'll be given the same accolades as certain blowhards in L.A. were given when they quit. BTY, to give credit where credit is due; " It is high, it is far, it is gone" originated with Frank Messer.
Happy birthday to him.

He and Waldman are terrible and have been from the beginning. For whatever reason when Sterling worked with Kay I thought they were terrific. Kind of like Mike and Maddog were good together but horrible on their own.

I used to love listening to Yanks on the radio but haven’t ever since it was clear that Waldman and Sterlings weren’t going away. I’m amazed they’ve lasted this long. As someone else mentioned, all you have to do is listen to another teams radio crews to realize how horrific the Yanks broadcast is.

Any word on who’s next?
On the radio, Sterling ranges between

silly but tolerable, and downright unlistenable for me. I will concede that in interviews, he comes across as a very humble, likable guy. He’s essentially still a kid who’s a baseball fan, who’s gotten to live his dream job for decades.

30 years without missing a game is worthy of respect, IMO, regardless of what we think of him on the air.
I noticed at the Old-Timers Day ceremony
bceagle05 : 7/4/2019 12:44 pm : link
they had Sterling and Kay seated at a table during the player intros, when they usually stand at a podium during that and other events. Obviously at 80 he's slowing down a bit.
I guess I'm in the minority

and that's fine, but I have always loved listening to Sterling. And I don't mind Suzyn at all. Listening to Sterling stirs memories from the 90s listening with my dad at night when we could get 880 down in the DC area. And lately, the summer nights on the road in some random hotel, or in my garage, I love tuning into the broadcast on the MLB app. There's a familiar comfort for me in hearing him all the games.

I guess after listening for awhile, you know what to expect with his calls and such. But for me anyway it will be a sad day when he no longer is behind the mic.

I guess it was 770 also at some point. And typo should be "hearing him call the games"
Yea his shtick is funny

And when he had his faculties 20 years ago it was a blast during the title runs. He's sadly lost it now. Like Greg said my issue with him these last 10 years are his deteriorating ability to see what's going on on the field. To make it worse Susan either doesn't want to or can't correct him or explain what the hell is going on. Listen if it was TV I wouldn't give a shit but they are our eyes on the radio. If they can't see what's going on we sure as hell can't. That all having been said 30 years without missing a day is damn impressive and hes a Yankee institution. I wish him an enjoyable birthday and good health.
Not a Yankee fan, so I'm not sure I've ever heard him call a game.
81_Great_Dane : 7/4/2019 4:51 pm : link
I appreciate his act at a distance. I get that he has made baseball on the radio memorable for a generation of Yankee fans, and that he's as much of legend as Mel Allen or Red Barber. He's not my thing, but I'm glad Yankee fans like him.

There are other of beloved guys I really didn't enjoy: Harry Carey, Vin Scully. Again, not my thing, but that's me.

Personally, I was a big Bob Murphy guy — he gave you TONS of information. Sterling is a different animal. He's an entertainer, really. And that's fine. Knock yourselves out, John Sterling fans. Hope he works as long as he wants to and lives to be 110.

Funny moment the other night
Eman11 : 7/6/2019 9:59 am : link
I was listening to the broadcast and thought Ruocco was doing a great job. It was nice to hear the game action being accurately described for the first time in a long time.

There was a point in the game where Ruocco called the play and then remained quiet giving Suzyn a chance to chime in with her analysis. There was dead air for at least ten seconds before she chimed in. I couldn't help but think Ruocco giving her the opportunity to speak right after the play caught her off guard as it probably hasn't happened like that for her in years.

Usually it's just mindless chatter about nonsense but now that she was given the chance to actually do her job, she was speechless. Lol.
