Terrible news: #Dolphins DT Kendrick Norton was in a car accident last night and doctors amputated his arm, sources say. Other details are not yet available. But he is still at the hospital.
Horrible!

This is just tragic.
It was his arm or his life
Shecky : 7/4/2019 11:44 am : link
So could have been MUCH MORE tragic.
Apparently they had to amputate his arm at the scene in order to remove him from the car.
Ugh!

"Norton’s left arm was amputated “by paramedics AT THE SCENE for him to exit the vehicle.”

Must have been a hell of a crash if they could not remove him without an amputation. Such a young guy too ....

Get better Kendrick .... !

Horrible and wish him luck. Hopefully he can recover mentally. That’s really where the battle begins. Good luck young man.
EMT’s amputating arm sounds way out there. hard to believe they would
plato : 7/4/2019 11:42 pm : link
do that without trauma surgeon consultation, or that they are trained to do that. it’s not a “simple” operation. need to know a lot more about exactly what happened etc.
however it sounds like an athlete who was in a terrible situation. Hopefully he’ll recover and lead as complete a life as he can.
I cannot remember a case

where a person was amputated by paramedics. Civil War, yeah but not in the 21st century. Maybe the arm was crushed. Crush is one of the worst kind of wounds.
Field amputations are exceedingly rare, but they happen

Usually conducted by an on-call physician; most major departments have one. It would have to be a matter of immediate life-or-death, I would think, to be conducted by an EMT.

Certainly possible it was a traumatic amputation occasioned by the accident, too.

Perhaps the arm didn't have a whole lot left keeping it there but to get him out would have meant tearing and shredding vs amputation..

Either way, yikes to him and to the on scene team.
They do it when someone is trapped
Sneakers O'toole : 7/5/2019 2:04 pm : link
in a wreck or in machinery. It's a last resort measure when non action will lead to the trapped person's death.
Well, that's a horrible story
Greg from LI : 7/5/2019 2:06 pm : link
But at least he's still alive at the end.
More than likely...
HoustonGiant : 7/8/2019 11:02 am : link
it was pretty much amputated, and they had to complete it.

Either way, it is really unfortunate.
