NFT: New York Rangers talk...

BC Eagles94 : 7/4/2019 11:49 am
The last thread was still active yesterday, but is buried as it was started 3 days ago.

I've been racking my brain trying to figure out a way to keep Kreider (just for this year, not even getting into extension talk, that is another issue). And it isn't easy. With the projections for the 4 RFA's (Trouba 7.5, Buch 3, D'Angelo 2.75, and Lemieux 1)...we still wouldn't quite get there with putting Smith in AHL and trading Namestinkov's full salary. We'd be a little over 1 million short. I really wouldn't want to buy out any of the d-men, due to dead money going forward.

One of the only things I could come up with was also having to trade Fast's 1.8 salary. Not something I would want to do, as he is a perfect bottom 6 player on a reasonable contract. But just trying to come up with scenarios.

Only other way I see it happening, without buying out a d-man which should really be last resort, would be trading one of them while retaining salary. But how much relief would we get dealing any of them? Are there teams who would even want any of them for 2 mill/year for the next two years? I don't know.
I asked this yesterday and dont beleive it was answered

Clearly I'm missing something but why can't they sign him to a 6-year with an AAV of 7.5 and have the years be 5, 8, 9,9,8,6??
I don't mind trading Kreider, especially if we get rid of one of the

anchors on defense. Even if we trade Kreider, I think our top-6 will be more or less set if we re-sign Buch. The key though will be if Chytil or Lias can assume that 2C role.

I guess they could. I don't see why they can't. I just worry Kreider has a lot of wear and tear on his body.

the NHL calculates cap hit on AAV, not when you get paid. You cannot backload an NHL contract to avoid a current year cap hit as far as I know.
It seems foolish to trade Kreider unless he brings back someone
yatqb : 7/4/2019 12:26 pm : link
cheaper who meets our long term needs...imo either a young proven center or a tough top 4 defenseman.

Kreider makes our 2nd line formidable. Without him we have a hole on the left side unless Kakko plays on the left wing. I see both KK and Kravtsov as natural RWs.

How they solve their cap issues will be interesting to watch. My hope is that they can trade Nemestnikov and Shattenkirk but I don't think any team is knocking on the door to land Shatty now.

But they could also get a deal in place with Trouba but not finalize it until the deadline, hoping that Shatty has a great first half and actually has suitors then.

Thanks PJ. I knew there had to be a simple answer. My way to good to be true :)
It might be
Bones : 7/4/2019 1:12 pm : link
Possible to trade Fast to tha Flyers without taking salary back as Fast is seemingly a Vigneault favorite.
Would Ottawa trade Bobby Ryan to us for Mark Stahl, Nemestikov, and a draft pick? Would free up 2.5 million. Brendan Smith would still need to be bought out.
That would be total of what 7.5 mil plus 8 mil we already have.

What happens to Smith's salary if he is at Hartford.

Ambivalent about Fast -- want to retain some character vets to build the culture. Apparently he is much admired and a fave in the locker room.
To me it's straight forward
JonC : 7/4/2019 1:31 pm : link
If you're keeping Kreider, you're trading Vlad and Strome to create the space you need to retain your RFAs, unless you can move one big contract on defense.

Any buyout should wait one more year, and should be a last resort.
They will likely need a roster spot for Kakko
JonC : 7/4/2019 1:32 pm : link
and hopefully Kravstov and Andersson.
Attach draft pick to staal or smith
Torrag : 7/4/2019 1:38 pm : link
and ship them out. Trade Namestinkov and Strome. Keep Kreider.

It's not the same, and I'm not mocking your idea. But I couldn't help thinking of the hoops that Knicks' fans benn jumping through ad nauseam (before The DecisionS): they all involve moving x, or y, and z and Frank, as if any team really wants or needs to take on Frenchie. Rangers have three Frenchies, Smith, Shatt & Stahl
I'm not sure
Gman11 : 7/4/2019 2:46 pm : link
how many of the restricted free agents are arbitration eligible, but a scenario like this work?

Let's say Buch goes to arbitration and the Rangers walk away from whatever the arbitrator sets the salary? Then he's a free agent and no cap issues?
Most likely they bury Smith
Vanzetti : 7/4/2019 2:57 pm : link
That way, only the league minimum plus $375,000 counts towards the cap.

Frees up 3 million

According to Cap Friendly
SJGiant : 7/4/2019 3:02 pm : link
A Brendan Smith buyout would save about 3.38 million in cap space this year and count 971K against the cap this year. Next year would be a much bigger cap hit as a result of the buyout

Well, two things:

1) IIRC, both Kravtsov and Kakko were penciled in at LW during Developmental Camp.

2) Kaapo Kakko's position in his 45 Liiga games for TPS this season

LW: 14G, 7A, 22GP
C: 4G, 1A, 4GP
RW: 7G, 8A, 19GP

Kravtsov's season in the KHL.

Total: 8 goals, 13 assists in 50 games
LW: 6 goals, 10 assists in 25 games
RW: 2 goals, 3 assists in 25 games

Small sample sizes, but I'm curious why you think they're better on the right
Why on earth would the rangers let kreider get away
djm : 7/4/2019 4:37 pm : link
I’ll never know. He’s reached his potential. He’s a terrific PF. Keep him.
Anak, I recall someone from the Rangers saying that they think that
yatqb : 7/4/2019 4:57 pm : link
Kravtsov is a natural RW, and the times I watched Kakko in the world championship I seemed to recall him playing on the right side as well. Even in the youtube highlights he seems to play RW more often, but maybe those highlights are primarily power plays.

That's interesting information; I didn't know that the two of them played LW in camp. I knew that both are LH shots, but I didn't know about camp, or their international breakdowns.

Seems to me that we have a lot of top 6 options.

Kravty

Rangers only save one million from Smith's cap # if he is buried in Hartford. It's something and may be enough to help, but it certainly isn't a big #.

This is completely wrong, misinformation.
Trouba, Vesey, Panarin, the cap
ColHowPepper : 7/5/2019 8:46 am : link
all of this occurred, the re-build accelerated, post JD hire. Don't think this is is pure coincidence. I think he has further plans in mind, which will be revealed in the fullness of time. Until proven otherwise, hard not to be confident in his and Gort's and Gordie's judgements. The outcomes will be interesting and a referendum on some current incumbents. Exciting!

that Kravvy clip posted by the Professor, very similar to a KK goal scored in the IIHF Worlds, also from the right wing, dragged between/behind his legs, deke, score. Vitali has more bend, more quickness in creating room for his shot, KK fend, more power, ability to keep the defender away from his shot.
It's fun to watch Quinn being interviewed about the new kids.

You have this opposite. the salary cap RELIEF is league minimum + 375k. So maximum relief on ANY contract this year is $1,075,000

Maybe it would be hard to dump Strome in a salary dump. Spooner and Strome had similar contracts so it was a "change of scenery" type trade.

Otherwise Strome and Namestnikov are the most obvious candidates (plus Strome is an RFA and Names is a UFA after the season), but neither probably has the value of their contracts even on a one year deal, so either the Rangers may need to retain salary or sweeten the trade.

Not against trading Strome
Davisian : 7/5/2019 3:33 pm : link
But he's lower on the list of potential salary dumps because he's more versatile. Can play all three forward positions fairly well and he's insurance in the middle if Chytil/Lias/Howden can't hack it.

agree Davisian
ColHowPepper : 7/5/2019 3:49 pm : link
he actually had some moments of eye-opening play, maybe not enough or consistently, but way better than the snoozer Spooner, and Nemest just kind of treads floats on his line, carried along by the tide
I too think Quinn was a great hire.
yatqb : 7/5/2019 5:09 pm : link
And Strome and Nemestnikov are the most obvious trade chips if we don’t want to trade Kreider and can’t get rid of the one of the S defensemen.
The Rangers gain $2.1mil....

SJGiant : 7/6/2019 11:03 am : link
On Brendan Smith is still open as per Pro Hockey rumors article linked. Second buyout window will be happening soon. I think this is the way the Rangers will go. However, the better approach is to trade these defensemen and give away some draft picks as compensation.

I’m surprised no ones picked us off on Trouba yet
MetsAreBack : 7/6/2019 11:43 am : link
I guess GMs only go after cash strapped markets when it comes to RFAs

A buyout is a horrific idea - will be really disappointed if chasing the shiny this offseason leads to that.
