To sing this song, and that is the way it was meant to be sung. I am not a fan of variations to our National Anthem.
That "one way" to sing the National Anthem happens to be based on an 18th century English song about drinking and sex called "The Anacreontic Song."
The Star Spangled Banner itself wasn't even made the official national anthem until 1931, and for what it's worth "America the beautiful" was also considered (and was a better choice, IMHO.)
PS: As Hendrix demonstrated, the Anthem is best on a guitar with no vocals anyway.
Philip Creech of the Metropolitan Opera singing alongside Mel Broiles, the lead trumpet at the Metropolitan Opera.
For anyone that heard them perform, tell me if its not the greatest of all time.
Perhaps someone has audio and video of one of their pre- game performances?
