NFT: Midsommar movie discussion. (Spoilers? Sure.)

Geez that film is unnerving. Not exactly terrifying, but deeply, deeply unsettling.

And Florence Pugh is both gorgeous and an amazing actress. That is a helluva performance. I was already kind of a fan, but this is other-level stuff.

I will say that I sort of saw the ending coming early on, so I wasn't shocked at the film's last moment. But even if you guess the ending, the journey is SO disturbing...

If you thought it was slow and boring, I'm not going to argue with you. But if it had been "faster" it would have been bad, IMO.
I loved it

Ari Aster is the best new director. I will make sure I see each new film he puts out.
No problem with the length or pacing.

If I'm not checking the time, it means in engaged in the movie. I thought the dialogue was great, particularly the beginning portion when they were in the states. It felt very real.
Thought it dragged at the end

Was really enthralled for the most of it but wish they had made it 20 minutes shorter.

Agree about the dialogue. It reminded me of Stephen King, in a good way. I was thinking about the short story (not the movie) Children of the Corn, and of the way he establishes a bad marriage in about a page of dialogue in the car. In this movie you get that this is a bad relationship from what's said and unsaid, and it feels very real.

The contrast between the parts that are very naturalistic and the drug trip scenes also makes the film disturbing. A scene can seem very naturalistic and spin into drippiness.
Trippiness.
