Anyone following Coco Gauff? Unreal stuff.

Haven’t missed a single match. Future looks bright for American Tennis!!
Her strategy is amazing
dpinzow : 7/5/2019 3:17 pm : link
She won that by out-thinking an opponent in Hercog who is a lot stronger physically. Gauff was getting blown off the court for a set and a half because she was trying to play power tennis. When she was near elimination in the 2nd set she switched to lots of slice and spin shots, which slowed the match down and caused Hercog to make errors because she couldn't charge in on them without any kind of game at the net
Signed every fans autograph who asked

After the match. Amazing for a 15 year old.
Second comment...I saw her matches too
dpinzow : 7/5/2019 3:30 pm : link
the fact that she can change her strategy based on opponent and play more than one style depending on opponent is astonishing for someone her age. She was able to play power tennis against Venus and in the 2nd round, but switched to finesse and guile to best Hercog.

She gets Simona Halep, an elite player in the Round of 16 on Monday and will be tested to the max...
Was coming here right now to make this thread if no one else had
crackerjack465 : 7/5/2019 3:34 pm : link
She is amazing. Tough draw for her with Halep next, but it has been an amazing run.
It could be insane to think about
crackerjack465 : 7/5/2019 3:36 pm : link
but if she could somehow catch Halep on an off day, she could make the finals.
I stopped watching in the second set...
bw in dc : 7/5/2019 3:40 pm : link
Thought she was done. Pretty amazing news.

Now if only the pipeline for US men was as bright...
Saw it as well
UConn4523 : 7/5/2019 3:49 pm : link
incredible. Can’t imagine what that must feel like at 15 years old. Had the mental fortitude of a vet.
That tiebreak was great.

And if you haven't seen it, this point from the Pella / Anderson match was spectacular.

Let’s not get greedy.
Asking her to beat Halep isn’t reasonable at this point
dpinzow : 7/5/2019 6:29 pm : link
If she does, that’s wonderful. If Halep wins 6-2, 6-2 it doesn’t change anything about Gauff being a potential superstar in tennis down the line. Halep is a top 10, sometimes top 5 player with a major championship so it would be the biggest upset so far if Gauff won on Monday

So did I. Until I saw on Twitter, she's was up in the 3rd set. 💪
Between her (and let's not forget Serena) & the USWNT

Our ladies are kicking ass across the pond.

Halep is very beatable. She isn't great on grass and has been up and down all year.
Don't forget Amanda Anisimova
Deejboy : 7/6/2019 1:06 am : link
Who made the semis at the French at 17. She already has the best backhand in women's tennis. She lost early in Wimbledon since she isn't use to grass but she will be a big factor at the U.S. Open. That is two potential #1s so the U.S. will still be a major factor post-Serena.
Gauff
PaulN : 7/6/2019 10:16 am : link
Is the future of USA tennis, no doubt. She has a good chance to beat Halap, Halap can get rattled, Gauff needs to continue to hang the rally's and be strategic, like she did last match. Beating Halap is very doable, beating Barty, Serena, or Kvitova may be asking too much. But this is fun. Going to the finals of the Cincinnati Open later this summer.
Anisimova
PaulN : 7/6/2019 10:22 am : link
Needs to work on her serve and her movement, but her ball striking is as clean as it gets, plus she is from Freehold, have to support a Jersey kid.
A lot of excitement down here in South Florida over gauff
jgambrosio : 7/6/2019 10:42 am : link
She lives down in Delray Beach now, her dad smartly opened up a sports bar that has been hosting watch parties for the matches. Between her and Kevin Anderson living down here, Delray has been getting their tennis mojo back, maybe they can get some stars back to their tournament
A player heading in the other direction: Sloane Stephens
dpinzow : 7/6/2019 11:54 am : link
Lost to Johanna Konta (1-6 in the 3rd set). Since she won the US Open in 2017 she's been in 1 final, the 2018 French, and has 2 first round exits, a third round exit, a 4th round exit and two quarterfinals

Anisimova is very interesting. She moves very well and has the body type to get bigger and stronger. Has some nice variety to her game.
Nadal and Joker
dep026 : 7/6/2019 1:25 pm : link
On a crash course with cake walks at least to semi’s. Don’t think Federer return game is at the point where it can beat Nadal.
Federer's game is much better suited for grass...
bw in dc : 7/6/2019 2:57 pm : link
than clay.

Nadal's serve isn't to be confused with Pete Sampras. Federer can block the ball back on grass and not be punished like he would on clay by Nadal.
Serena on to the quarterfinals
dpinzow : 7/8/2019 9:20 am : link
Gauff vs. Halep next
Agree with Dep
Andy in Halifax : 7/8/2019 10:14 am : link
Federer seems to be moving well at the moment but that is always something to watch as the tourny goes deeper. But he's struggled with the backhand at times, seems to have lost his timing/rhythm. Especially on the return. That tends to change from match to match, so maybe he finds it in practice but if he doesn't Nadal will be too tough for him.

Nadal has been a beast. Well, in the two matches I watched. Very high quality. Hope we get the SF's we all want to see though, would make for a great week of tennis.

Also great to see the women's game on the upswing. I really enjoy women's tennis but the past few years have been a bit of a dead period. I've enjoyed the women's matches more than the men's matches so far.
Gauff falls to Halep in straight sets 6-3, 6-3
dpinzow : 7/8/2019 11:03 am : link
Halep was a bridge too far at this point but you can see how good Gauff will be. The sky's the limit
Nice break for Serena with Riske winning.
Mad Mike : 7/8/2019 11:10 am : link
Pliskova and Muchova getting close to trying that new tiebreak.
I think people still underestimate
dep026 : 7/8/2019 12:43 pm : link
The greatness of Fed, Nadal, and Joker.

This is the time where they should be competitive, win periodically, and pass the torch.

Well the gap isn’t even coming close to closing and maybe getting wider. It’s not unreasonable to think these are the 3 greatest ever.
Who underestimates...
bw in dc : 7/8/2019 12:59 pm : link
the greatness of Fed, Nadal, and Novak?

All three are squarely in the discussion for greatest players of all time. That's pretty much without dispute.
This is the age where Fed should be in the royal box
Andy in Halifax : 7/9/2019 7:46 am : link
watching the next Wimbledon upstart come along.

What he is doing at his age is ridiculous. He's a legit threat to to win a major each and every time. Nadal and Djokovic are younger but just as amazing. Golden era of men's tennis for sure. We're on the last lap but I will enjoy it while I can. One more Federer/Nadal Wimbledon 5 setter please!
If Federer doesn’t figure out
dep026 : 7/10/2019 11:03 am : link
How to return a weak second serve... he won’t even win this match. His 2nd serve return has been abysmal all tourney. He’s not even putting it play.

He looks like crap to start against Nishikori.
Slow start but has rolled ever since the start of the 2nd set.
Andy in Halifax : 7/10/2019 1:21 pm : link
Djokovic out there embarrassing guys though.

Djokovic literally had a bye to the final once Thiem and Zverev lost.

Still need to see Fed return better to have a chance against Nadal. Nadal is breaking Querry pretty easily, so Fed needs to serve huge.
Would love to see Fed get 1 more major
Andy in Halifax : 7/10/2019 1:26 pm : link
But I don't see him getting passed Nadal. Nadal is playing at a higher level and makes it so tough to beat him. Djokovic vs Nadal would still be a lot of fun though.
its crazy that all 3 of them
UConn4523 : 7/10/2019 1:28 pm : link
can get to 20 majors.
When would a Nadal vs Fed semifinal
Metnut : 7/10/2019 1:31 pm : link
take place? Would be great if it was Sat/Sun and not on a workday.

Roger wanted another set of practice before Friday.

Give me another 5 set classic with Roger winning. Boy I hope it's a good one.
