NFT: Kawhi Leonard and Paul George to Clippers

MookGiants : 7/6/2019 2:04 am
Breaking right now. Bunch of picks and Gilges-Alexander/Gallinari to Thunder.

Thankfully he's not going to the Lakers.

Clippers will be the favorites to win the title. This move makes the NBA at least interesting come playoffs. If he went to Lakers without injuries no reason to watch.
That's awesome, no LAL
ChaChing : 7/6/2019 2:17 am : link
great duo. Great choice of running mate by KL as well

When I moved here I certainly couldn't become an LAL fan, so rooted for Marco Jaric, Chris Kaman, Corey Maggette, Elton Brand, Q Ross, etc. I wasn't a huge CP3 fan as great as he is, so the newer Clips, with the constant complaining, and Doc was annoying

But this will be a fun team to watch. LAL-LAC will be a madhouse
Westbrook has to be traded now, no?

Did OKC really just get Shai and Gallo and 5 firsts and 2 pick swaps for Paul George or have I been drugged?
Tho the story is kinda sickening...if you will...in terms of the
ChaChing : 7/6/2019 2:31 am : link
players running the show. Per ESPN, KL was recruiting PG, who in turn asked for a trade. Players who are good enough can break contracts the moment they feel like it, and go hang out with their friends. Small market teams had it bad but they are more F'd in the A than ever
Clippers
MookGiants : 7/6/2019 2:35 am : link
had to do that trade. It really was all of that for Leonard AND George. No brainer. Without getting George he wasn't going to go to the Clippers by himself and I'm sure they knew that, so you have to do whatever it takes to get George.

Lakers signed Danny Green to a 2 year 30 million dollar deal.

If things go south for the Lakers this year I wonder if Davis will leave the door open to leaving to go elsewhere. I'd be absolutely stunned if Davis didn't resign but it will be interesting if this blows up in Lakers face. I doubt it blows up in their face but I dont think they will be contenders either.
OKC
MookGiants : 7/6/2019 2:38 am : link
did very well in that trade. No one should be sickened by that from a players running the show perspective. The Thunder had no reason whatsoever to trade him unless they got a huge package back. The Thunder are probably thrilled with what they got in return.
Happy to see it

Best possible outcome as far as creating the most potential parity. Fascinating season upcoming, really looking forward to it now.

The NBA has absolutely perfected its offseason. They own the news cycle this time of the year

Trade is fine, anyone would love that haul. But with many lamenting how LeBron can decide basically whatever he wants, this is more of the same whether you like KL / PG or not

Whats the point of a contract if guys can just leave within a yr or 2? I'm not even judging, I might do the same in their shoes, but that's not ideal for running a even, legit, competitive league. It's the NBA so it is what it is, but still a fair view (even if 'sickening' is a bit exaggerated)
So mad at this because okc

Is my team. While they did get 5 first rd draft picks: 1.) they’ll all end up as late first, none of them will be lottery picks, so you might as well call them five second rd picks. 2.) there are NO generational groundbreaking talent on the way up at all within the next 5 years at all. 3.) it’s time to trade Westbrook, he can’t coexist with anyone and you need atleast one other superstar to be relevant in the West

Lakers sign Danny Green and JaVale McGee.

Not sure the Lakers will have quite enough to survive the West, but they’ll be right in the thick of it, obviously.
Smart move by the Thunder
hitdog42 : 7/6/2019 6:16 am : link
if they can find a way to move westbrook they can go full rebuild.

Shai is a good piece and the picks. There should be a market for Adams as well.

They could keep everyone and still try to make the playoffs- i don't think that is entirely out of the question.

not many teams with the cap space/assets/desire to get Westbrook though.

I'd argue this story confirms a few things. The Durant/Kawhi story about trying to convince each other to play on the Knicks/Clippers story is true. Durant would've come to the Knicks had he not gotten hurt and still would've come to the Knicks if he could've convinced another star to go even after he got hurt. The Daily News backpage headline of everything being ruined when Kevin Durant got hurt wasn't an exaggeration... it was true.

The Clips gave up A LOT to get an injured Paul George. Jerry West usually makes smoother deals than that. That's SGA and 7 1st round picks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow
Oscar : 7/6/2019 6:48 am : link
Great for the Clips and the NBA. The league is as wide open as its been in 15 years at least. Really exciting season ahead.

Offseason

A bad offseason just got worse for the Knicks. Entering a summer with the focus on getting superstars and this many change teams and the Knicks strike out is really bad. The Nets, Lakers and Clippers all made themselves contenders this summer and the Knicks won’t even be a playoff team for awhile.

It just shows you what having good management in place can do. What a series of events for the Clippers. They were in cap hell not that long ago. And that’s an impressive haul by Sam Presti. It was tough seeing the “Knicks braintrust” last night....

I wish I did then I wouldn’t be a tortured fan lol.

But seriously you can’t argue this off-season wasnt a major failure for the Knicks. It just sucks being the one team out of 4 NYC/ LA team that got completely shut out while the other 3 loaded up. I respect your positive outlook but I don’t know how you see it any other way. What these 3 teams did is really impressive and I’m just disappointed it didn’t happen for my team. Especially knowing it was possible entering this offseason.

of course we would be and of course i wanted superstars but it didnt happen..

time to look at the young players they do have and stop searching for ways to get other teams superstars..

the 3 sophmores on the team had good games last night, you have randle who sounds like he cant wait to play for the knicks, payton who is excited..

If anything knicks will be a fun young team to watch..

And the bright side knicks are in lone to get the next available superstar if need be
Oh id love if the Lakers get shut out on free agency

A ton of great teams out there. Clippers will be nasty next year. So happy to see him go to somewhere besides the Lakers.

Jerry West is just something else man. He didn’t exactly fleece the Thunder but what a big balls move this was by the Logo. George/Leonard surrounded by attack dogs like Bev/Montrezl? Nasty.

I feel for Russ. I like the Minnesota Wiggins trade someone mentioned above.

The Lakers aren’t winning shit. They have no PG and no shooting. Danny Green and KCP are a bad consolation prize. And watch Kizma regress. Most young players do when playing with Lebron.

The Nets are only in contention if Durant returns mostly healthy and doesn't get re-injured. Otherwise they're a high-40s win team that doesn't make a conference final

Disagree on the Clippers roster. They look great imo.

Beverly/Lou Will
Shamet
George
Kawhi
Zubac/Harrell

That’s a loaded roster if they’re healthy, probably better than the loaded roster Kawhi had in Toronto. I’m really big on Shamet too, he has J.J. Redick potential.

They’re the favorites out West, nothing like GS the last few years but they have the best team. George/Kawhi is such a great combo because of their two way play.

This is gonna be fun.

There are a few teams who Westbrook can fit...

Minnesota
Denver (Westbrook and Jokic can be interesting)
And maybe Chicago? But I doubt they want to pair RW with Lavine. And they won’t give up Lauri or Carter.

And I don't think Kyrie and KD are worth the risk. Keep the young core and see what shakes out the next few years. And don't judge RJ by one SL game. Be patient.

As for Dolan... It may play a role and he is certainly more present for basketball. But the Rangers did just land the biggest free agent. The Lakers are a mess but AD still wanted to go there. I dont think Dolan precludes us from big players.

He’d be a bad fit on Denver imo. They run their offense through Jokic who is a top 10 maybe Top 5 offensive player in the league and they are really high on Jamal Murray who is a rising star. The chemistry between Murray/Jokic is special and fun to watch, they play off each other so well and create for a fun to watch Nuggets offense.

I love the fact that the Nuggets now have a real chance to win a title and the above paragraph isn’t just a footnote.

Tou can't sit here and say they did well. That's a joke and speaks to the delusion that most of you are under. The rest of the NBA is making all of these moves to get stars or recruit other stars. The Knicks with their 70 plus cap didnt do shit. Only saving grace is they dodnt give out bad contracts to handicap them in the future. Also, certain they dont have the right management to go forward, Perry hasn't distinguished himself on a good or bad way yet, but the rest have been part of losing for a long time.

I suspect AD will sign a new 1-1 after next season and basically monitor James. If LeBron falls off or retires, AD is out of there.

Knicks fans are still bitching about the time they traded Gallinari and Raymond Felton (and Melo finished top 6 in MVP voting). Yes, the Clips were over a barrel because they had to get Kawhi on board. But let's not pretend the Clips didn't give up a ridiculous amount of assets to get Paul George. And because everyone hates/wants to rag on the Knicks, they would've been destroyed universally for trading that much for Paul George. So the "How come the Knicks don't do something like that?" complaint is silly, at best, especially when it ignores the fact Kawhi was never playing in NY and he eventually went where he always wanted to go.

OKC got volume not quality, but they turned George leaving for nothing a year ago into a solid year and something. In sum it's a good move.

NYK wasn't getting George. Leornard and George are 2 kids from the Inland Empire in Socal, who've both at times insisted on LA. They now both get that, get to play with each other, on a good Clippers team, with a championship coach, and a great front office.

Wait how bout paying closer attention. The Clips made several moves to put themselves on such a position, like trading Tobias to get more draft capital and then absorbing Harkless for a first rd pick. Its moves like this that made this happen. Jerry West, that's all there is to it.

First of all it's elfrid not eldrick.

Secondly you're still missing the point. Kawhi really didn't want new York. It was a courtesy meeting. Maybe we had a shot with Durant. Maybe. We chose not to pursue Durant. Story over. Paul george wouldn't have sealed the deal for the Knicks. The clippers were a place he wanted to go and has made it known for a long long time.

If we had waited until July 6th to trade five firsts, Barrett and Knox for Paul george and not gotten Kawhi and been left with the free agent leftovers, we would have been destroyed up down right and left by the media,.worse than now.

I'm much happier where we are now than facing a much worse situation if anyone can believe that being possible.

OKC acquired THREE unprotected first-round picks from the Clippers in this trade (2022, 2024 and 2026), league sources say, PLUS two firsts from Miami (2021 unprotected and 2023 protected 1-to-14) ... AND the right to swap picks with the Clips in 2023 and 2025. Staggering

2:53 AM - Jul 6, 2019

The Clippers will be without their 1st round pick in 2022 when George's contract expires at age 32 and Leonards enters his final year of his contract at 31. There is a chance that all three of those unprotected picks could be in the top 5.

If the Knicks gave up all that for a player who is 29 and already had one major injury I would be fucking pissed.

When he's been left with "chicken fried shit" (see 2018 Lakers) he gets injured and misses the playoffs and pouts until he gets a wingman to hold hands with.

good for Kawhi not just making the easy decision to go to the lakers. Good for OKC to cash in on PG. Good for Clippers to continue to be a well run franchise.

Next year will be as wide open as any season I can remember. Milwaukee is definitely the class of the east but they aren't unbeatable. Sixers should be interesting if this mix is better than last year's. Raptors and Celtics take a step back but both still good. Nets interesting but non-threatening until KD is back. Watch Riley nap Westbrook now and build an OKC-east in Miami with him and Butler.

GS, LAL, LAC seem like the top 3 teams in the west (NBA?) and all 3 have the makings of interesting identities. The Clippers should be a beast defensively, GS still has most of the championship roster pre-KD, now with Russell, and the Lakers have 2 of the top 3 two way players in the NBA. Houston, Portland, & Denver should both still be very good. The Mavs & Jazz may be on upswings.

and Porzingas if healthy is probably the most dynamic 7 footer in the game. Both very well suited for the way the game is played today. The rest of the roster is very much lacking but those 2 are a really, really nice start.

Utah is a very safe bet to win 50-55 games but not sure they have enough upside to compete in the playoffs beyond round 1. I would definitely bet they end up having a better season than the Mavs as both teams are currently constituted, but the Mavs have the higher ceiling if they fill out the roster around Doncic/Porzingas.

On the Jazz. Won 50 games and added Mike Conley, Bojan and Ed Davis. you're adding 21-7-3 and 18-4-2 to a good team, but more importantly both guys can shoot and spread the floor. They lacked shooting last year. Contigent on Mitchell continuing to grow and becoming more efficient. Defensively they will be solid.

But Pat Bev, Paul George & Kawhi? that trio defensively is absurd. Then you have Lou Will dropping buckets and another dog in Montrez. Wonder how Doc feels about PG - he used to date Doc's daughter but was caught cheating.

Lakers will be solid, but for some reason i am a little wary on them.

So many moves i completely forget Golden State didn't go anywhere, in fact i liked them losing KD because they need more depth. When they first established themselves i remember Barbosa always coming in and giving them good minutes. Its sexy having a big time starting 5, but injuries and stamina can bite you.

I hate to say it, but the east broke nicely for Philly this year. I got cocky about the Bucks last year and then they folded. I think the Brogdon loss is huge. Still a good team though.

Can Boston get another guy? They'll still be good, but not a championship contender. How does Dipo come back for Indy? That was a terrible injury.

And lastly, My team in Brooklyn will be ultra fun to watch. I actually think they'll be better than people think without KD because they have awesome depth and a group of guys who really like each other. I'm confident about Kyrie's fit because Kenny is awesome with PG's, but more importantly Dinwiddie, Prince, Caris, Jordan, Kyrie etc. are all friendly off the courts. Roles are defined. BUT, i'm not naive. No KD, no chance at a title next year.

Knicks fans, i'm sorry but as long as Dolan owns the team its going to be tough for you guys.

Most excited i have been for the league in quite some time. Love the parity, love not knowing who is going to win. Will be interesting to see where Kevin Love goes during the season.

The Raptors played it perfectly -- built a winning program, managed the roster well, and when the chance was there absolutely went for it.

There's absolutely zero to knock in how the Raptors approached the last 5 years.

Agreed.

1 year deal. Boy this was a borderline All NBA guy a few years ago now signing cheap 1 year deals at a time

Achilles injuries are career-killers, though everyone forgot that this week because LOLKnicks.

Lineup looks like:

Rondo
Green
Lebron
AD
Cousins

Oof.... rondo is useless with Lebron.
Yeah, the Lakers should've gone for legit role players (Marcus Morris)

rather than names. That's a weird mix of personalities, and who knows what Boogie has left.
Quinn Cook was a good signing for them

he'll probably end up playing more than Rondo.

So many moves i completely forget Golden State didn't go anywhere, in fact i liked them losing KD because they need more depth. When they first established themselves i remember Barbosa always coming in and giving them good minutes. Its sexy having a big time starting 5, but injuries and stamina can bite you.

I'm really looking forward to this Warriors season. Expectations obviously can't be as high, but it'll be interesting and entertaining as hell. Last year just felt like a slog and I couldn't get invested in it.

I'm ecstatic they signed Looney. I wish he'd play more at the 4 (or even 3, his projected original position) than as undersized center all the time though. I wonder if they'd be tempted to roll out a Curry, Russell, Green, Looney, Cauley Stein starting 5.

Cousins is signing his second prove it deal and will be about 18 months removed from his surgery at the start of next season.

His Achilles injury absolutely curtailed his career, and it's still TBD if he'll be anywhere near the same guy.

The Nets would be wise to just let him redshirt all of next year, and really increase the chances of him coming back in the best shape he can be post injury.
