Giants vs Jets 1987 and 1988

Mike Graves : 7/6/2019 4:03 pm
Why did they play each other two years in a row? Weird part about it is in 1988 the Giants did not play another AFC east team. So what was the reason for playing the jets in 88. Also In 1990 they played every other team in the AFC east but the jets. Wonder why that happen

Played the Chiefs back to back years also in 83 and 84 and they played the west in 83 but not in 84, i would like to know the reason why also the same goes for the 93 season when they had two bye’s and a 18 week season

1988, '89 teams still had the roster and coaching to make another Super Bowl run.
Ugh. What could've been.
Some random nobody had 3 sacks for the Jets

In the 1988 game. He had like seven in his entire career!
Also, they played the Packers twice in 1981 for some reason

Ken Rose. A guy who was a replacement player. Marty Lyons, a run stuffer had a couple of sacks too. I still say that loss to the Jets in 1988 was the worst regular season loss in the last 35 years. The reason is that 1988 was wide open and the Giants got hot late in the year and could have won a Super Bowl.

Should have added to my post that these 2-game events happened in 1981, 1984 and 1988.

Carson broke the blackboard at halftime and they went on to destroy them.

the Giants had to play the crappy Rams. Both teams sucked. So when the Giants had to play them in 1999, the Rams suddenly got VERY good. Somehow, the Giants played the Rams almost every year from 1999-2005.

schedule...

I recall the Jets playing the Chargers twice in 89' or 90' also. Very common back then with the unbalanced divisions.

Friggin milquetoast Walton. I like the Jets team back then, they were friggin stacked. Klecko, Gastineaus, Toon, Walker, Hector, McNeil, Mehl, Lyons, Schuler...
I have always regarded that game
bluetothegrave : 7/8/2019 4:26 pm : link
As maybe the worst loss in Giant history Gmen had 3 injuries on the offensive line that game. We had the lead late on a nice drive by simms. Then Bruce harper had a reallynice return and ken o briend drove the jets down the field. Al toon Td over the outstretched arms of Tom FLynn. Giants could have made the playoffs but the 9ers ..who had nothing to play for and definitely wanted the giants out of the playoffs..laid down that night and the rams beat the 9ers and got in instead.

Awful..horrendous loss. Giants could have won it all that year. Ken fucking rose with 3 sacks. Jets needed that win I think to go 8-8 or something. Awful. awful loss.
that, of course, was the genesis of the Phil Simms-Ronnie Lott beef
Greg from LI : 7/8/2019 4:39 pm : link
Simms was the one who said the Niners "laid down like dogs" against the Rams because they wanted to keep the Giants out of the playoffs. Given the way the Giants were the one team at the time that gave the Niners trouble in the playoffs, it certainly made sense.
there were only

28 teams in the nfl at that point, and only 3 divisions in each conference.

the scheduling was completely different than it is today
Going into the '88 game, the Giants had the best pass rush

in the league, and the Jets were either leading in sacks allowed or close to it, and yet the Giants couldn't get anywhere new O'Brien. If we win the game, we win the division. Lose, and we go home. We went home, and I put the onus on Parcells for allowing the team to take the Jets so lightly.

It was pretty much everything that went wrong for the Giants. The Jets finished 8-7-1 that year, but they also got better as the season ended. They blew out the Colts the week before and knocked them out of the playoffs, so they were playing the role of spoiler.

And for the Giants, it was win and in. They fell behind 20-7 and had to fight back to go ahead 21-20 late. But there was 2 other ways for the Giants to make the playoffs

- Dallas to beat the Eagles (Giants win division)
- 49ers beat the Rams (Giants get Wild Card)

Of course, Dallas was at the end of the road with Landry and lost to the Eagles. And as Greg noted above, the Niners rolled over to the Rams (the Niners wanted nothing to do with the Giants).

But in this game, Perry Williams hurt his neck, which forced Tom Flynn, a special teamer, to try to cover Al Toon on the fateful last throw.

I remember getting shit from all my Jet fan friends after that game. Of course, the Jets followed up that 1988 season by shitting the bed , going 4-12 and firing Joe Walton in 1989. The Giants went 12-4 in 1989 and I shoved the next 2 years of the Giants run with the 1990 championship up their ass, mainly because I wanted to get them back for 1988.
