for my brother in laws bachelor party. Do you want those recommendations? We drank, rented boats, rented scooters and then drank some more. Had a couple nice meals and I personally enjoyed the bloody mary's with Caribebeans in them (Green Parrot and Blue McCaw)
There are not a lot of "beach areas" b/c its mostly coral.
Rent bikes and go around the whole island. Rental shops are cheap and plentiful.
Cuban Coffee Queen downtown for morning coffee and quick delicious cuban breakfast.
Flying Monkey is best frozen drink spot on Duval. Great setup for people watching and the drinks flow easy. Add a float of 151 on top and you'll be on your way.
DJ's clam shack was my favorite meal. Fresh delicious fried seafood washed down with ice cold beers. A great meal after a a long day biking in the sun.
Glazed Donuts (name of the shop) right off Duval some of the best donuts i've ever had.
Catch a sunset at Mallory square or even better take a sunset booze cruise.
Don't plan too much. Enjoy the relaxed vibe and go with the flow.
Take boat out for the day excursion. I believe it comes with a simple lunch and breakfast. Basically a large fort in the middle of the Caribbean, you can tour the fort and also go snorkeling (they provide the snorkeling equipment and some quick training if needed). If you reserve early enough ahead of time you can camp overnight.
to find decent, affordable accomodations on relatively short notice.
You probably will be looking at $250+ per night at lower end places.
I'd recommend staying is Islamorada or elsewhere. You can do Key West in an afternoon just going down the main drag, then going by Hemingway's House and then going to the Southernmost point in the US. Other than that, it's really a party scene.
Best thing to do - rent jetskis and do a tour around the island. Goes out of the marina next to the Westin. Great guides and takes a couple hours so definitely worth the money!
didn't go in, but did do Harry Truman's White House very close by, a National Park, and free, at least the museum and gift shop was. We had a lot to cover in one day...
I personally love Key West and would think you could have a great time there with your family (especially college age kids).
- August can be a bit toasty down there, I am not sure of your budget but the Southernmost hotel has a nice beach attached to it and just in general is a really nice resort. As someone mentioned the beaches arent great so you want to make sure the hotel you are staying at has either a really nice pool or beach.
- to the point above I wouldnt stay at an airbnb because you want to have a nice pool or beach.
- Make reservations at Latitudes if you can, one of the hotels (i am blanking) is actually on an island in the harbor and has a great restaurant you can eat on for the sunset.
- There are a ton of bars with great live music. During the day anyone can get in but at night the age of your kids (or their access to fake IDs) will dictate some of your fun level.
- Great for fishing, snorkling, or jetsking. Not great for golf if that is your thing. There are sunset cruises that are very scenic as well.
- Town is cool to walk around in but you dont need 7 days there.
- You could always do 2/3 nights in Key West and then go up to one of the other keys. They dont really have much going on outside the resorts, restaurants and fishing but their beaches may be nicer.
and much easier to get around. The Upper keys are nice, but you have to drive everywhere in the upper keys. In Key West, you have Mallory Square at sunset, Mel Fisher Museum, Butterfly conservatory, Jetski, Parasail, snorkel, dive, fish, Sunset sails. That's just to name a few things. All are usually within walking or a short bicycle ride of your hotel. Too much to list here. I've been here since 1981 feel free to email me directly with any inquires or questions if I can help. captrbh@gmail.com
