Common Denominators on the Giants this Off-season

gidiefor : Mod : 7/8/2019 12:15 pm
I just finished watching the Giants Insider interviews since the OTAs broke for the summer - there is quite a few of them.

To a man the common denominators I notice is that they all seem talk about having their noses down trying to learn their craft, all are complimentary of their competition and teammates, and they all appear to be focused on fitting into the team.

What really stood out is the mentions of other players and what they bring to the table.

I can't escape the observation that this is a team and that they all support each other.

Well, we've won 8 games in two years

So might as well buy into this off season talk and be optimistic.
Well, it's often when teams are losing

that the sniping at other players/coaches/the system starts. It's kind of expected in the offseason, but a good sign nonetheless. I honestly think part of the reason Collins was let go (as opposed to say trying to franchise and maybe trade him) was partly down to attitude and how some of the issues with him and Apple went down. Both gone now - and I wouldn't have wanted Collins at $14M/year anyway, but you see a lot of people take shots at DG for 'mishandling' the situation, convinced they could have gotten some great return from a trade. It's likely they wouldn't have ended up with much more than what they'll get in Comp picks, and we had plenty of picks this year anyway.

Mind you, I liked Collins as a player, but he didn't seem much of a leader on that D, and did have issues in coverage - he needs to play in the right system to take advantage of his skills, but I think we may look back at his 2nd season as his career best...
Not too knowledgeable how contracts work

But getting comp picks for Collins is probably best?

Ideally we pulled a Bellichek and traded Collins last year for some premium picks. He falls into that category of not an elite franchise player, but a shade below that isn't worth a huge contract, like Seymour and Chandler Jones.

Not really a fair comparison with Belichick who has been in that system for 19 years, to DG/Shurmur who have been here for just over a year. On top of implementing a new system, they had to figure out what they had.
Well as far as this goes

Maybe guys don't want to be traded to Cleveland?
The giants have sucked lately

Because their OL sucked and the defense sucked. Players. We lacked players. And then, when shit inevitably went south by October the divas and drama queens did their usual.

If the 2018 giants had the 2007 OL they don’t go 1-8 over the first nine games. If they had any semblance of a defense last year things aren’t over by October. The divas aren’t generating over stated and over analyzed attention and things are just fine here.

This team is extremely young. Is it any wonder there aren’t many loud mouth pain in asses running around? How could their be? 90% of this core of players hasn’t accomplished anything in the nfl as of today.

I’m excited for the present and future but this refreshing locker room talk is nonsense.
I don't think it's nonsense

Macadoo lost all semblance of control over this team. A lockerroom room reboot is an essential part of getting this team back to being competitive.

It had to happen.

"Some premium picks" for Collins? More than one premium pick for Landon Collins? In what parallel universe?

In this universe, DG was offered a 4th Round pick (only one) for Collins, which he turned down. In retrospect that looks like a wise decision, because it appears that the Giants will get a 3rd Round comp pick out of the deal.

As noted, we with the number of rookies, 2nd year guys, or guys new to the Giants -- a large portion are either learning the Giants or the NFL.

I'm happy none are explicit assholes and said they are tooling around, but guys like DRC and Vernon also frequently said the right thing at the mic.
