NFT: Where have all the good peaches gone?

I Love Clams Casino : 7/8/2019 1:41 pm
I can't get a good one...I must be eating these GMO cloned peaches that stay "fresh" for 7 weeks after they're picked.

I want my peaches back!

Rant over
are you buying...

That's really the issue. Stuff in the supermarket can sit for up to a year in their freezer. Then they bring them out.

If you have access, your best bet is a farm. We pick strawberries, blueberries, and apples. Peaches already picked but from a farm but fresh.

Supermarket produce is not frozen. Stuff would wilt or turn to mush is you tried to put out previously frozen produce.

Supermarket peaches, tomatoes, etc are lower quality because they pick it well before its ripened. That way itís still hard and wonít bruise in shipping. Then they expose them to ethylene gas (a gas produced naturally by many fruits). The gas is a ripening agent, and will quickly ripen the fruit. But the result has much less flavor and inferior texture vs. tree/bush ripened fruits.
my peaches are almost ripe

I'd have expected you'd know those are called tomatoes, or if really large melons... SMH.

they're pretty good. At Farmers' Markets, they can be REALLY good.

The apples out here, however, are not good by northeastern standards. It doesn't get cold enough in the winter for a lot of the best apple cultivars, even in the mountains.
They are horrible in Minnesota this year

Went to two local supermarket chains plus Target and Walmart....no good. No flavor
Just had some great ones
kennyd : 7/8/2019 4:52 pm : link
from Wegman's. Not sure exactly where they were from but they do a great job with their produce. Had some heirloom tomatoes they Wegmans get from a farm 20 minutes away. Maybe not farmers market fresh but damn good for a supermarket
I have good luck with the Organic ones

You couldnít find quality peaches in Walmart & Target? Shocker.

Have you tried Dollar Tree?
The only supermarket that has had peaches worth buying
Diver_Down : 7/8/2019 5:43 pm : link
has been Publix. Their produce buyer has an inside connection. Every year, they have been fantastic. The only supermarket that I would consider.

Vineland peaches have always been very good when they were available in Maryland unfortunately now a days they seldom are.
I buy Southern or

Georgia (maybe NJ), wash 'em, put 'em on a plate on the windowsill, and if I get a couple (few?) sunny days, I'm golden. Very few duds this year; maybe only the first batch that had to try to ripen in the rainy weather. They are out there!

Speaking of timing - I'm catching my wife and both daughters in New York for two weeks early mid August, and am checking if we have an excuse to get down to the NJ shore a bit and stop in again at Drew's Bayshore Bistro.

How long in advance to we need to reserve a table? IE, How's the summer traffic mid August?
