NGT: Cowboys CB Byron Jones admits to cheating

Giantsfan79 : 7/8/2019 3:13 pm
Cowloser Byron Jones sits down with the Dallas official website, and admits on tape how he's taught to use illegal techniques against receivers because they don't think the refs will call it. And then Dallas decides to post it on their website.

The video interview is at the bottom of the page.

Eh, I mean I don’t think I’d post it on the team website

But it’s much ado about nothing, in my opinion. Every player and team in the league is thinking about this stuff.
Committing a penalty

isn't what I'd call cheating. Sort of reminds of when the Patriots DB's were physical with the Colts WR's because refs never really enforced the 5 yd rule. If the refs don't call it, you do it, are you really cheating?

otherwise, every team cheats, Giants 10th most in the league (for when they got caught cheating).
This is a non story.

This is routine play.
It also is why the NFL fucked up big time

making pass interference a reviewable play. By the letter of the rule, it could be called on almost any passing play.

I agree. It's a knee-jerk reaction to one incident and any management professional knows...you don't make all encompassing rules to address one or a few anecdotal happenstances.

It's gonna be a disaster and only magnify the inconsistencies. Personally the league was much better when a call was just a call, you took your lumps when they happened, but you also cashed in when the call went the other way. Seriously, when do we get to the molecular level of what is a catch and what isn't?
I get worried every year when

the braintrust that is the competition committee gets together. The NFL needs new leadership badly.
This is nothing new

The Legion of Boom era Seahawks admitted the same thing. They were going to push the envelope because the refs aren't going to call them all.
That stuff isn't free

I agree w Sn O't...

...that this is not news. The NFL and its referees have known that CBs are often times playing w illegal techniques for years now. Ever since the Seahawks DB core said the same thing.
OK...I agree w Greg too

...the S'hawks basically challenged the NFL to call them on every play, knowing they never would.

(Baseball, Football, Soccer, etc.), apparently it is okay to do things that you would never do in individual competition (Golf, Tennis, and Individual track and field events).

It seems the moral standard for what is "cheating" depends on whether you are cheating only for yourself alone, or for both you and your team.

I am not at all comfortable with this concept.

This seems to be a metaphor for real life as well.

I have seen lawyers say things in support of their client's interests, which they would NEVER EVER say in support of their own interests.

Some lawyers seem to think that their function as legal counsel gives them a license to assert facts about their clients which they either know to be false, or for which they have absolutely no factual reason to believe.

Sometimes I don't even think that those lawyers are intentionally trying to cheat. I just think that they were improperly trained about what is the proper behavior for an attorney. Then again, maybe I was the one who was improperly trained.
It's called playing the position.

Every player in the league tries to use the rules to his advantage. You don't think Giants' DB's do the same thing? He probably shouldn't be so blunt about it, but this is a complete non-story.

Is horrible. Know what I do when a review is happening?? i turn on red zone and try to time it so I don't miss a play. One bad call against the saints and now they will challenge PI penalties. Awful, just awful. Saints had a chance to stop them and win the game but they couldn't. Even if they scored a td on that drive and not a fg, maybe the rams don't just kick a FG on the next drive but they score a TD instead. I know maybe they could have run out the clock there but its one call in a million calls.

What a terrible snap reaction because the NFL looked bad on one play. It happens, the game is played so fast, guys make mistakes. Now we have to be subject to pass interference reviews? atrocious.

As far as the cowboys defenders pushing the envelope..also non news that was hilariously though posted on their website...you never post that. Nice big juicy eyes on them for the season..lol. Dumb asses.

the difference is individual sports like Golf and Tennis are completely void of physical contact between opponents. That a massive reason why you see that disparity in how far you can push the limits. The limits are also cut and dry in individual sports - ball out of bounds, foot on the line when serving, etc. There’s really no boundaries to push.
Maybe Giants coaches need to show our secondary...

Somebody will reach to draft Jones who is a 4th round talent

Great analysis by our draft expert.
This is a story for non-athletes.

OL hold as much as they can without being called.

WR obstruct as much as possible on crossing patterns.

Corners forces wrs off their routes, news? No.
Kris Richard taught these techniques
fanatic II : 7/8/2019 8:40 pm : link
in Seattle, now he's teaching them in Dallas.

In his first year with the secondary he did an incredible job. He took good players and made them much better. Byron Jones was the biggest beneficiary. Richard's first move was to switch Jones back to CB, turned out to be genius move.

The rest of the secondary all benefited, Awuzie, Brown, and Jordan Lewis. This past offseason it is Lewis who is standing out and if he has a good training camp he will be pushing for a starting spot in the slot or at CB with Jones and Awuzie coming off injuries.

Dallas's secondary will be seen as the weak link in the Dallas defense, but that will be proven wrong with Richard coaching them up.

when you can grab the jersey without being called.

I was not happy with it in that situation but do you think the pros aren't going to push the envelope until the refs rein it in?

Do any of you exceed the speed limit?
This stuff..

happens in individual contests as well:

Look at cycling and track and field. There is widespread doping that basically makes it impossible to win if you aren't using something. Bodybuilding actually has a class just for clean vs "regular".

And even within individual contests, you have tactics used that can be seen as cheating as they are technically against the rules.
Much ado about nothing. There are the written rules and the unwritten

rules. That's what he was talking about.
