NFT: Things to do in or near Monticello, NY?

BlueLou'sBack : 7/8/2019 5:49 pm
Trying to fix a two week stay there in mid August with family, (me, wife, tow teenage daughters.) The girls like kayaking, so perhaps renting kayaks for one day and getting on the upper Delaware is one idea.

Nature in the are re trails, waterfalls?

Restaurant recommendations (nothing too fancy please, Diners, pizza etc) If possible (doubting it) ethnic food re Asian or Italian?

Is there a drive in movie in the area? They've disappeared over the decades since I was a kid...

Any local pub/club with music?

All and any ideas appreciated, TIA.
Casino is there now, Resorts World Catskills

Canoeing in Narrowsburg, you're a short drive from the Gunks and hiking, or head into the Catskills for bigger hikes. Little towns like Calicoon and Roscoe are quickly walkable and interesting.
Roscoe Diner

is popular for eats.
Thanks pops!

hope all is going great with the baby - above all, health!

Trip Advisor suggested Forestburgh Playhouse, for summer stock theater. Will have to investigate.

Look up the Feast on the internet, supposedly only real deli in Monticello. Has kosher and non kosher meats but supposedly the kosher meats are superb. I have never been there but if I was in that area again, I definitely would try it. Good luck and have a great time with the kids. Be careful driving at night, because the deer will be on the sideroads. Roscoe Diner is on Rt. 17, north of Monticello and Liberty Manor, and is one of the better places for food (at least it was 23 years ago).
Delaware River is where you should focus
RobCrossRiver56 : 7/8/2019 7:48 pm : link
Maybe go a little farther to Hancock. There are canoe & kayak rentals and shuttles in town. Hancock to Buckingham is a nice 6-7 mile drift. To me, the upper part of the Delaware is one of the most beautiful places in all of NY, but you need to be on the water. With good weather the scenery is stunning in the summer. Eagles everywhere.
The Hancock House Hotel has a nice bar and restaurant downstairs. On Main st is Little Italy II, good Italian food. There are a few 9 & 18 hole golf courses in town. Also good restaurants in Deposit and Rosco which are both 30 min out of town.
Good Luck !!
Monticello....

Resorts World Casino is a big attraction there. Have been hearing good things about changes in Livingston Manor. More businesses have moved in. Roscoe has the river attraction, plus a small brewery in town. Also, check out the Villa Roma. A little further up in Hancock, there is a pretty good kayak rental/shuttle service called OARS. Great area to kayak the Delaware. So many eagles and other wildlife along the river. That's less than an hours from Monticello. Enjoy your trip

Callicoon has a pretty nice downtown with a brewery and good food. Definitely check out Poppinos on main st for great food.
I haven’t been back

There since going to Kutshers in the 90s before it met its fate with the rest of the Borscht Belt resorts.
Any interest in going to West Point, about an hour away?

Bethel is close

to Monticello, there’s an outdoor concert venue that gets big touring acts and a museum built on the site of Woodstock. There might be a decent band/artist playing while you are there. I think it’s called Bethel Woods Center for the Arts.

There’s a drive-in theater in Hyde Park that I think is still open but it’s an hour away maybe more. You can see FDR’s mansion while there (and one of the Vanderbilt’s.)

Good Idea! Has New York de-criminalized it yet? I promised my daughters, now 16 and 17, that one night we would smoke weed, bake and eat home made choc chip cookies, and watch The Harder They Come (Jimmy Cliff) and The Rocky Horror Picture Show... Maybe Monticello is the place for that.

I like the idea of a local brewery or 3... The wife will drive too, and not have more than 3 tasting size shots, or just sips from whatever I order.
Didn't finish the thoughts re wife driving us home from a brewery or 3

That's the deal I cut for giving her 1 night at the Casino on my dimes.

I've been licked, washed up for years
And I merely survive because of my pride"

Written by Jimmy Cliff and published or first recorded in 1969 has been covered about 15 times since, including by such luminaries as John Lemon, Cher, Eric Burden and the Animals, Annie Lennox....

That particular song has more meaning for me now than ever before.

Thanks for all the tips!

Bethel Woods and Woodstock Museum...

...gorgeous up there and it's the 50th anniversary of the festival. Bound to be interesting this year.

To me, seeing that hill for the first time was like visiting Mecca. But I'm old.
Another vote for Bethel Woods

Wife and I drove in, DROVE OUT. Spot on - Chernobyl is right! BROKEN GLASS EVERYWHERE THOUGH. I was afraid I'd get a flat.

We went to a Van Halen concert at Bethel Woods - STUNNING facility, BTW - highly recommend it for concerts - we stayed in Liberty.

Never stay in Liberty.

What a sad, sad, depressed absolute DUMP of a town. Everything is in ruins or on the way. Grossingers stands in ruins like the Roman Coliseum.

The next time we went to a show there, we camped at the Campground by Swan Lake - nice place and they have a shuttle bus to the concerts.

just saw some pictures, very spooky and sad - those resorts peaked in the 60s but once commercial air travel became affordable and tristate Jewish population assimilated/intermarried they could not compete
Now there are so few

Oh I know and am living it now, but they are great gals, and do respect their dad's advice perhaps more than I deserve. Probably more than I deserve.

Thanks to all for tips, and find myself lucking out in many ways.

Thanks for the tickets, Chris!
Prolly gonna get tickets for John Fogerty 8/18 at the Bethel Performing Center Pavilion, very reasonable deal for 4 tickets of general admin on the lawn...

Forestburgh Playhouse performing "The Producers" 8/13 onwards every night, a classic B'way musical from my own teen years that I saw with my parents, perhaps Mel Brooks's finest work (awesome movie version with Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder), kayaking looks great on the upper Delaware and my daughters are psyched about that, hiking, some longer journeys out down to 6 Flags in Jackson and one overnight at the Jersey shore... Gonna be good, and lots to do with some driving around.
