It's been 8-10 years or so since I've purchased a TV but it's time to replace our old Sony 65" LED. Son moved out and couldn't afford a TV so we gave him that one.
Frankly, I was a little taken aback by the array of prices. I really don't want to spend more than 1500 - 2K, but prices fluctuate between 500 and 12K for what seemingly are the same thing.
Any recommendations out there? I'd like a little bigger than 65".
Do you know the model number? I like LG products. Do you mind me asking what it cost you?
But I do have a Samsung for my main TV..can't go wrong with Samsung..

65 inch LG OLED. Take a look, I don't think you will be disappointed.

I’m going 85” later this year. LG has an 86” model on amazon with solid reviews for $2200 when it’s in stock. Not sure what I’m doing yet but I’ll be in the $2500 range.
My personal feeling is to not pay the premium. In 2-3 years, the TV you pay $3K for today will be close to $1K.

Bought a 75 inch Sony x900 in December for my basement..I love it more than my wife. Not as much as my dog though.
Haven’t gotten around to seeing which models I like, there room won’t be ready for another few months and by that time it might make sense to just wait for the November deals.
Yeah it’s definitely a big problem in the industry. The good news is you will usually know right away if it happens so you can return it and get an exchange/refund. It’s pretty rare to have them pop up 6 months later since it happens a lot during transportation.
QLED (Quantum Dot LED) is supposed to be superior, and there are some QLED TVs out there but last time I looked they were very expensive.
The thing I envy about OLED is the true blacks, as opposed to gray-blacks. Also, they're super-thin and gorgeous.
Speaking of blacks, contrast ratio is a key spec. Go for high contrast ratio. Good for HDR but also generally for better blacks and highlights.
The arcane feature I'd most want in a new flatscreen is support for Dolby Vision HDR, which I think is the best HDR system. If you use an AV receiver, I believe that it's the receiver that would decode that signal, though.
I've recently seen a demo of some gear with Imax Enhanced software built in, and I think that's a great option if you have a really good TV, especially a big TV, and a good home theater sound system. Imax Enhanced applies some of the special sauce Imax uses in theaters to your home content, so it enhances picture and sound. It also automatically optimizes the settings on the TV for the content you're about to watch. If you like to tinker, and customize, you may not like that, but a lot of people end up with sports and video game settings (like motion smoothing) turned on all the time, and movies don't look the way they're supposed to that way. This option is built into high-end gear at the moment so it may be out of your price range.

UConn, if you don't mind me asking, what town are you building in? My wife has mentioned that building is her long term goal, although we love Trumbull and don't plan on going any further North or East. There's not much land available in Trumbull to build on.
I know a few people who have built in Newtown. The town is real pretty, although a bit too remote for my liking.
One bit of advice I would give is to go to a store like Best Buy, don't look at the tickets for brands or types and just look at the picture. Which look the best, which has the brightness and coloration that you like. That's what we did and it really helped the decision.
Also, yes, I believe there will be discounts on TVs during Prime Day.

I really want to go projector in our new family room but the room is the perfect size for an 85” screen without all the hassle of mounting the projector. I think in time I’ll go projector if I ever do our basement.

Milford, right in Gulf Beach. We've been looking for a house up here for 2 years, probably saw 50 houses. A couple deals fell through, a couple we had to back out of due to inspection concerns that I wasn't comfortable with. Then a small house popped up in the neighborhood we wanted but could never afford if buying a modest sized home. So we knocked it down and building new. Its a great town especially if you have kids - happy to share more via email.

That's awesome, congrats. An old co-worker of mine did the same thing and I believe she built in the Gulf Beach area as well. Her family owns Tranquility Spa in downtown Milford.
If you are looking for a bargain then just get the biggest 4k TV that will fit in your budget. You can't afford OLED or QLED since screens that big will cost you 2x-3x your budget. So take the low end of your budget and get a solid unit from LG or TCL - you can find 2018 models on Amazon that are 70".
I like OLED but its still too expensive. QLED is interesting as its a bit cheaper but it has its downsides. I'm going 85" so i'll either get a high end LED like the Sony XBR85 or an entry level QLED like the Samsung QN82Q7.
Its kind of like cell phones. You don't need to upgrade yearly anymore since they are so much better than they were in 2010. But they are getting so good that waiting more than 3 years will make you feel the difference.
Same here. I just got a 58" 4K LED tv for 300 bucks.
Unsure of when you are looking to purchase, but there are usually good deals around Labor day. Do you live in the Tri-State area? If so, head over to a PC Richards and actually see the QLED and OLED next to each other. Some people prefer the OLED and some the QLED. In my opinion, you can't go wrong with either. Even if you visit the store and compare the two and wait around for Amazon Prime Day or something similar, at least you know what you will be getting.
Here is the model I got - ( New Window )
Yep, they're crazy UConn fans.
LG and Samsung are decent, but overpriced for what you get. Samsungs are way too oversaturated with their colors

Going to best buy to look at the pictures is one of the worst things to do. The TVS are often set to "display mode" which oversaturate colors on make things artificially colorful so they stand out to consumers staring at a wall of TVs
My 2011 plasma still runs like the day I bought it, but it doesn't have smart features, isn't 4k, and is just too limited in functionality. Tech is just so far ahead 8 years later and I'd rather watch TV on my smaller bedroom TV that's from 2017 (4k, HDR10, etc).
It makes a huge difference.
The best one is a 55" Samsung LCD I bought before SBXLII.
11 years old this February and still better than the much newer Sharp Aquos, Panasonic plasmas (2 of them) and an LG LED.
I keep wanting to replace the Samsung but I can't bring myself to do it when it's the best TV I have and it works fine and while it's not a smart TV I do have a blue-ray DVR connected to it that is a smart DVR, so I'm not missing out on anything - and I also have a Roku connected to it.
Has worked great for years - no issues at all.
Been happy with all my samsung products

I would totally go with TCL all over again. Or for those who want to see how the set performs live before buying it sight unseen, I'd go to Costco and look at their selections. Their return policy is second to none.
Fwiw, my brother had two Samsungs fail on him with 3 years of purchase(dead pixels, lines across screen). The LG smart TV he bought a couple years back has been great.
Good luck.
