NFT: HR Derby - the juice is loose

RasputinPrime : 7/8/2019 8:26 pm

Pederson with 21 in the opening round. they aren't even using special balls this year. Just regular old game balls.

to watch. The new format is terrific.

Karl Ravech should be throat punched for acting like what they're doing is comparable to Josh Hamilton in 2008. The way hamilton was going in that one round he may have hit 40 with the new format.

I was there in 2008 with my dad, in the right field bleachers, something I'll never forget.

Yeah the new format is so much better.
Best home run derby in years
Hsilwek92 : 7/8/2019 10:09 pm : link
and it’s not even over.

I doubt Perderson or Vlad Jr are the same the rest of the season.
The new format is great
Hsilwek92 : 7/8/2019 10:10 pm : link
The way they’re presenting it on screen is awful though. Get rid of the split screen garbage.
Alonso's pitcher can't throw strikes

Alonso’s pitcher is killing him

True but more than anything, I think Pete's guy
ChaChing : 7/8/2019 10:24 pm : link
is pitching himself out of a decent pay day. I'd think there's a little agreement between pitcher & hitter for a win (or I would anyway)
Alonso
Mike in NY : 7/8/2019 10:24 pm : link
Yep I have the bonus, but I won't use it
but he wins anyway

Nice job Alonso. If he had a decent pitcher he may approach 30 too.
Pete should trade pitchers mid round
ChaChing : 7/8/2019 10:26 pm : link
could take any of the others save Chapman

And fwiw has 1 min less while Vlad has swung a ton...if fatigue matters to Vlady at all
Vlad Jr has to be gassed, right?
Hsilwek92 : 7/8/2019 10:28 pm : link
This shit is Alonso’s for the taking IMHO. Go Pete Go!
I hope this doesn't do too Alonso
Canton : 7/8/2019 10:30 pm : link
what happened to Wright years ago..

Lose his home run swing for the second half..
If Alonso wins it's the Justin Morneau vs. Josh Hamilton derby
dpinzow : 7/8/2019 10:34 pm : link
all over again with Alonso as Morneau and Vlad Jr. as Hamilton
Seles grunts on every swing
ChaChing : 7/8/2019 10:34 pm : link
as slow a start as Jr's had

IMO you need the split screen when they are not waiting for one ball to land before throwing/hitting another.
A little fatigued...

but still ridiculous power go figure

They could use a smaller, PIP like box for that. The split screen they have is just way too much.
Thanks to the draw Pete has a chance
ChaChing : 7/8/2019 10:39 pm : link
Not so much because he hit the most HRs or showed the most power (some on his pitcher tho)
I love Tex

Alonso!

From this Yankee fan, Alonso is already one of my favorite players in baseball. Kid is a class act and an awesome fucking hitter. That was great.

Same, his rookie season and demeanor, reminds me of Judge two years ago.

I would disagree. They’re not cheap: they’re poor.

While that’s a big problem, they have shown a willingness to pay the homegrown talent, deGrom and Wright being prime examples.
The Wilpons are in no way poor
Hsilwek92 : 7/8/2019 11:16 pm : link
They’re most definitely cheap.
I worry about the home run derby
bhill410 : 7/8/2019 11:26 pm : link
Way less for kids like Alonso, judge, Stanton, and vlad jr because they are natural power hitters who just plain put a charge in the ball.

Where it gets dicey is for players IMO are the acunas of the world who may be changing their swing for the contest (see wright, abreau)
If you had to pick
Nine-Tails : 7/8/2019 11:33 pm : link
One slugger for a one round clash. Who would be your pick.

My pick: The Judge, most raw power in the game
I could be wrong but I think Stanton
bhill410 : 7/8/2019 11:55 pm : link
Actually has the higher raw power with judge second and Alonso third. I am basing that off the chart of hardest hit home runs that they showed after a couple Alonso ones this year. I think Stanton and judge were only people in history to hit harder than a couple he had in late April.

I think it’s Judge, basing it on the distance you see in bp and in the last derby, Judge had several over 500 ft. I think it’s that Stanton is able to put more into his swing than Judge in game situations. Stanton goes full 100% ripping it.

Stanton has more power than Judge and Sanchez harnesses his power incredibly well. I'd go

Stanton with Judge second, Gallo third.

I don't think Alonso is top 5 in raw power. I think he is just an underrated hitter with excellent power. How many would Gallo hit? I'd probably put Bryant, Vogelbach, Sanchez, Harper, and Bell ahead of Alonso. It's impossible to gauge because hitting ability counts for more than raw power with a ball that jumps off the bat like the PEBaseballs this year.

I think Stantons power translates more in games. But in terms of raw power, I'm going with Judge

I mean gallo doesnt rank in the top 20
bhill410 : 7/9/2019 10:01 am : link
of hardest hit balls in 2019. I am not 100 sure what you mean by in game power as pitchers generally arent throwing the speed necessary to generate that much power in softball leagues. These guys see plenty of fastballs over the course of the season so in theory he would have gotten a hold of one.

Vlad and Joc stole the show. I love this format.

For all the talk this season about the balls being juiced, it should be noted that the balls were also juiced during the steroids era and help explain the massive home run totals. One of Bonds's HR balls was dissected and found to have an additional rubber ring around the core. Juicing the balls is nothing new.

It's also why the idea of comparing raw numbers across eras has always been a murky, futile exercise. The balls have changed, the bats have changed, the field dimensions have changed (and vary drastically), the strike zones have changed, the mound heights have changed, the player pools have changed, and the use of pitchers have changed.
