NFT: Marcus Morris to the Knicks?

Reporting with
@MarcJSpearsESPN
: Free agent Marcus Morris -- who committed to a two-year, $20M Spurs deal w/ player option -- is re-considering agreement. Morris is now considering a free agent deal with Knicks, who'll have additional cap space with reworking of Bullock deal.

But I would think Marcus Morris would be a MUCH better signing than Reggie Bullock. I mean we don't need another PF, but Morris is a better player.
I'd rather not sign a guy who I will have to play, perhaps
shockeyisthebest8056 : 7/9/2019 4:44 pm : link
at expense of kids. Of all the guys they signed, they only ones they really have to play are Randle and Payton.
Serious question: Why?
81_Great_Dane : 7/9/2019 4:45 pm : link
I mean, he's going to be 30, so he's not a long-term addition. What does he bring to the Knicks? Not familiar with him.

Sounds like both... and enough vets already jeez.

Yahoo Sources: New York Knicks have a one-year, roughly $15 million offer on the table for Marcus Morris who is considering reneging on his two-year, $20 million agreement with San Antonio.

He's a really solid all around player.
They could probably get something for him at the deadline
Strahan91 : 7/9/2019 4:52 pm : link
if they're out of it.
He's tough and is pretty good all-around
Bill L : 7/9/2019 4:53 pm : link
can hit the three. He's a bit of a black hole sometimes but that's okay. I really liked him on my team and a little sad he's gone.
this is nice to read

In a brief conversation with ESPN, Bauman was complimentary of how the Knicks handled this emerging situation with Bullock. He cited how accommodating ownership, front office and medical staff had been in dealing with new issues facing deal: First-class throughout, Bauman said.
He'd be a good trade piece at the deadline.
bceagle05 : 7/9/2019 4:53 pm : link
Beyond that all these vets don't make a whole lot of sense.

True. I'd also add when they're out of it.

and pro's are good to have as examples and role models when you are building with youth.
Would be a really good signing
Italianju : 7/9/2019 4:55 pm : link
Except I dont know where the minutes come from. I was ok with randle, Portis and Gibson cause we needed bigs but not sure where another one fits. They better not sign him and relegate Mitch to the bench.

They have enough of those as it is.

Ellington, Gibson, Portis, Bullock assuming he's deal goes through, Payton.
.
DanMetroMan : 7/9/2019 4:57 pm : link
Randle/Robinson should get heavy minutes, Knox is going to see some time at the 4, Gibson will play, Portis will play, this will be silly with Morris too. These guys aren't coming here to ride the pine and stay quiet.

Morris is better than any of those guys right now. That's why I doubt he'd be amenable to sitting on the bench if/when the Knicks need to play kids.
Morris would be a highly tradeable asset on a one year deal
Heisenberg : 7/9/2019 5:01 pm : link
And he's better than the rest of the vets that they've signed, IMO. It's a good use of cap space
Problem
GMEN46 : 7/9/2019 5:04 pm : link
Is that 2 of the main competitors this year (clippers and lakers) who need depth will not be able to trade picks to Knicks. Also would be hard for teams to match $15 mil per year in contracts if they have 2 or 3 max guys.
I'll say this...
bceagle05 : 7/9/2019 5:05 pm : link
I do not want all of the kids starting. Smith, Barrett, Knox, Randle and Mitch is a horrific shooting and defensive lineup, even if they are the highest upside young guys. A mix of vets and young guys in the starting lineup and the bench would be a good thing.

I have been thinking about this and I agree. The kids will need to be split up between the first and second teams and mixed in with the vets. I have no strong view about getting Morris but he does seem a little redundant unless one of the other guys is going to play more C than PF - but if he's better than them, he's not redundant I guess.
Mitch
DanMetroMan : 7/9/2019 5:10 pm : link
needs heavy minutes, his "flaws" can only improve with burn, not practice time. Barrett looks less than ready to play "huge" minutes but the kids outside of Frank will 100% play. Lets see if Fiz is actually a good coach or a big mouth.
Mitch is the only guy I'd lock into the starting lineup.
bceagle05 : 7/9/2019 5:11 pm : link
Beyond that I'd be receptive to different combinations. Marcus Morris would definitely start at one of the forward spots, if he signs.
Morris
TommyWiseau : 7/9/2019 5:12 pm : link
provides defense, some decent shooting ability and a non stop motor. I would welcome him here on a 1 year deal. Someone will bite at the deadline.
Morris can also play the 3 a little bit

Seems like it's simply a $ grab. 15 million for 1 year vs. 2 for 20 including the player option. Probably betting on himself.
Was gonna say, iirc Morris is a solid defender
ChaChing : 7/9/2019 5:30 pm : link
While I love the pro pickups, NYK has close to nothing on D. I would have gone after him first, but assumed he wanted a better team

It's tough to build a culture with no one who reflects it - so my one gripe with this team is how do you build a D mindset w/ no defenders or min D bball IQ?

I'd be glad to grab him. At least more than anyone not named Randle
Line up
GMEN46 : 7/9/2019 5:31 pm : link
I think you need a good mix of vets and young guys. They will have to move some of these guys in December/January there will not be any time for these guys to play. I would think that frank is all but gone by now. My first take in starting line up:

PG - Payton
SG - Barrett
SF - Knox
PF - Randle
C - Mitch

The one thing I will say is they have Mitch locked up for 3 more years, they may take their time with him and only play him 24-28 mins a game. Defensively that is a really bad line up, maybe Knox comes off the bench.

Morris is seven minutes younger than his identical twin brother, Markieff. He is a fan of his hometown Philadelphia Eagles while Markieff roots for the rival Dallas Cowboys.[30]

Unrelated

but teams messed up passing on Fall. He's going to be a limited minute specialist but he moves "well" for that size and will have an impact. Lucky Celtics.

If you factor in the income tax differences though it's only a ~$1.5M or so difference

A million here, a million there. Pretty soon youre talking real money.

Anyway, its more like $2.5M.

Good points here. On one hand, my reaction is cool, Knicks are back to trying to play .500 and compete for the 8 seed.

But another full tank season throwing the kids to the wolves may actually stunt their growth.

Don't feel too strongly either way about any of the guys we've signed, but at least the front office had a plan B if they whiffed on the max guys - fill out roster with vet competitors on short tradeable deals, don't blow up cap space with another Amare type signing.
Knicks
TyreeHelmet : 7/9/2019 8:29 pm : link
Where are they playing on all these bigs? You really want to limit Robinson to 20-25 mins a game? He needs to play major minutes. And if they believe in Portis and Randle- they need to play major minutes.

What happened to develop the young players? And if they are signing them to trade them- what do they reasonably expect to get back?

I dont understand the point of this signing or the overall strategy. Atleast this guy can defend and is actually tough.
They definitely went a little overboard with the FA signings.
bceagle05 : 7/9/2019 9:05 pm : link
I dont think Ellington and Portis serve much purpose as stopgaps.

Randle, Taj, Bullock, Payton and maybe Morris would be fine along with the young guys. Keep a spot or two open for the Summer League crew to earn.
i wonder if there was some research done...
Italianju : 7/9/2019 9:09 pm : link
by the FO on in season trades vs offseason. Like did they think they would get more value by signing a guy and trading him during the season vs absorbing a guy into capspace. I have not looked at all into this, just was thinking about it.

Id take Morris, i mean guys will get hurt. And maybe he just takes Gibson's minutes, id be ok with that.

Will be interesting to see how fizdale does this year. I mean mock the knicks all you want but there is a lot more talent on this team. It shouldnt win 17 games.

True, but that was a 1-4 from the moment he started attacking. The play there was moving the ball

Not so impressed w/ him today so far either. He's forced less bad plays & passed a little more from the first 2 games so that's something. But again it's SL - even if on fire the experience & process is what matters most atm
Kadeem Allen
bceagle05 : 7/9/2019 10:37 pm : link
has me longing for the days of Chasson Randle.
Nice to see KK & Iggy w/ confidence (#s or not)
ChaChing : 7/9/2019 10:38 pm : link
A little disappointed Mitch seems kinda as ooc as last year. Positioning is inconsistent, lots of fouls, that run of goaltends last game. He'll be fine but that's the biggest improvement I'm hoping from last season

We'll enjoy having a decent pass-first PG tho Payton isn't an allstar. Years of Gs inability to get the ball to the right spots, if not just to the wing or post. This is SL but it's awful for NYK. Kadeem is serviceable for THIS level...maybe. Kinda speaks to why we'd have Vonleh bring it up at times last season

You should call every GM in the league and ask them which they'd rather have.
