Should the Giants draft Jalen Thompson Wednesday?

Giantsfan79 : 7/9/2019 4:46 pm
Wednesday is the Supplemental draft. Washington St safety Jalen Thompson is considered the most draftable of the bunch. Projected as a 4-7 rounder.

He had his workout today. 26 teams attended (don't know if the Giants did or not yet). He measured just over 5 feet, 10 inches and weighed 186 pounds with 8 3/8-inch hands and an arm strength of 31 1/4. He had a 33 1/2 vertical and 40-yard dash times of 4.47 and 4.56, with a 4.16 in the short shuttle and a 6.98 in the three cone.

snippets from a scouting report from NFLspinzone.com [full report through the link]

Quote:
Thompson offers a ton of flexibility to a potential defense, as he plays in the nickel, over the top of the defense, and even creeps toward the line of scrimmage on occasions.

It is evident by watching Thompson pre-snap that he is an extremely intelligent player, and often calling audibles and making adjustments to the secondary; it is rare that he is in the wrong position by the time the ball is snapped.

On outside runs, sweeps and swings, Thompson is talented about getting out into space. He takes great angles to meet the ball carrier as close to the line of scrimmage as possible and is more than a sufficient open field tackler.

While Thompson will never be placed on an island and his reps in man coverage should be limited, he is no slouch in one-on-one battles against backs, tight ends and receivers. He is a great umbrella over-the-top as well, evidenced by his six career interceptions over the last two years of his career.

Weaknesses

Against the run, Thompson struggles to get off of blockers and tends to tip-toe around the action as the pile continues to drag forward. On wide runs to his side, there are times when Thompson should be in the picture, but as the play continues, he does not show up. If he is not immediately involved in the play, then he has a tendency to take the play off. He is plenty inconsistent against the run.

While he can be used inside the box, he struggles there, so unless he makes intense improvements there, keep Thompson over the top of the defense or in the slot in the boundaries.

The Falcons ran Thompson’s position drills today. Thompson met with the Packers after his workout to take a physical that will be made available to all teams. The Patriots, Rams, Dolphins, Colts and Cardinals also showed interest in him.

The Giants have priority over all those teams except the Cardinals. Seems like he could be worth a 5th rounder to the Giants?

If he's not even good enough for a 3rd-round projection,

why bother?
Honestly, I don't know.

Discussed it a little bit since the players hitting the Supplemental Draft were announced, but I still don't know. My guess is, though, that a 5th won't get it done, not if the reports about the Packers being very interested in him are true.
I've never seen him play, but I prefer safeties who aren't afraid to

No

the learning curve is too great in such a short period of time.
Throw a 5th or 6th

But he wouldn't be expected to start. Bethea will be the starting FS. While the plan is to convert Love to FS, the existing group consisting of Chandler, Moore, and Adewusi shouldn't preclude adding more competition. Having Bethea serve as a player coach for this season with young stable of guys learning can help ease the transition next season. At some point, Bethea will lose the race with Father Time. We can either return to the FA well, draft an early prospect next year (at the expense of other needed positions [OL]), or cultivate and leverage the experience that Bethea brings this season with some young players. Giving up a 4th to bring Thompson aboard doesn't seem like a steep cost to pay.
yeah

he doesn't sound like what we are looking for
Counting Beal as essentially a rookie,
BlueLou'sBack : 7/9/2019 6:09 pm : link
we have 4 rookie CBs-DBs already on the roster along with two players with half year or less in experience in Haley and Chandler.

That draft preview of him doesn't sound so hot either, and his measurables are bleh, no big deal.

I don't know enough about him but on the surface of it he's less of a prospect than Corey Ballentine, and way less than Love or Beal or even Haley. Hard pass. Let others go fishing.

Small for the position.

Size matters in the NFL
A 186 lb safety?
Section331 : 7/9/2019 6:41 pm : link
I’d pass.
No thanks.
Matt M. : 7/9/2019 8:02 pm : link
Tbe write up on him is bleh, they already have a very young secondary, and I don't like his size. Ifhe can't shed blocks in college at 186, I have no confidence in him being able to do it in the pros. This is a hard pass for me
He seems like a good candidate for a hybrid role
Zeke's Alibi : 7/9/2019 8:10 pm : link
. Fast, quick, but undersized. His hands are pretty small for a guy his height so you gotta wonder if he can put any more weight on his frame, not that that is a strict correlation.
I always thought the late rounders would be good for the

supplemental draft. Giving up a 6th this year would be the equivalent of a 7th next, a player who in any draft has a snowball's chance in hell of amounting to much. Might as well take what's already a lottery ticket and increase the odds a bit.

Can you say that in English? I have no idea what you meant...
Don't think so
Sy'56 : 7/9/2019 9:47 pm : link
There isn't anything here that makes you want him in 2019, and there will be handfuls of safeties in the 2020 draft that are on his level.

Thanks Sy!
If he graded out lower than a 4th rounder this year
Rudy5757 : 7/10/2019 9:24 am : link
you might as well pass. I dont know the player but in the Supplemental Draft as y28 mentioned the learning curve is so short. You are essentially getting a low level prospect that hasn't been in any camp and is months behind the other rookies already. 5th, 6th and 7th round prospects are longshots to begin with.

Nothing really stands out from a measurables standpoint either. Looks like a back end of the roster player. If the Giants see anything maybe just throw a 7th on him but I think we might be better off looking at the cut list for a backup with better measurables.
awfully small
JonC : 7/10/2019 9:35 am : link
across the board.
If it's a 6th
pjcas18 : 7/10/2019 9:38 am : link
or 7th round pick absolutely - and he projects to have a higher round grade.

Those picks are basically darts on a dart board.

if you can get 4th or 5th round value in the 6th or 7th round and even if it means "red shirt" him a year (worst case due to lost time in OTA's, etc.) I would absolutely do it.

and I know zero about this player, it has little to do with the actual player, it's just very very perplexing how some people on here value late round draft picks.
Sounds like a Grant Haley clone
mavric : 7/10/2019 10:08 am : link
Physical measurements, speed, borderline conference recognition for defense not quite making the list, etc. Haley is 10 lbs heavier now, but when he was picked up by the Giants he wasn't.

IMO: Pass (unless the Giants see something in him that makes him an improvement over Haley as a rotational player)
