Breer MMQB: NFL Mock Draft 2020: An Extremely Early Look at the Possible Top 10 Picks

“9. NEW YORK GIANTS (+5000): LAVISKA SHENAULT, WR, COLORADO
This may be a little bit of a projection – but this 6-foot-2, 225-pounder has the potential to be a real No. 1 in the NFL. In just nine games last year, he had, 1011 receiving yards and 6 touchdown catches, and 115 yards and five touchdowns on the ground (as a wildcat quarterback). He’ll have to stay healthy (a shoulder problem cost him five games last year) and continue to evolve, but he’s a big, sudden athlete with a very high ceiling. The big on-field question, at this point, is how fast he’ll run in February. With a good time, he could be a worthy successor to Odell Beckham as the Giants’ next No. 1 here.”

At 5-10, 186, Jalen Thompson won't pass every club’s threshold for FS, which could move him back to CB. He has the requisite agility & acceleration for man to man, as well as good body control and hands for INT. A pesky, drag-down tackler. Enough savvy, toughness to stick. 6th RD

McClure LI Herald: A New York Giant among us
Lynbrook Atria resident played for team in 1954 (3-09-2012)

“Johnson grew up in the Oregon Coast Range foothills and was a football and track start at Portland’s Roosevelt High School. He had a choice to make in 1948 — to try to qualify for the U.S. Olympic team as a pole-vaulter and compete in the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, or accept an appointment to West Point. He chose the latter.
After playing at West Point, where the Cadets won 28 straight games before being upset by Navy in the 1950 season finale, Johnson went on to attend the University of Washington and starred for the Seattle Ramblers of the now-defunct Greater Northwest Football Association. He spent 1953 with the Canadian Football League’s Saskatchewan Roughriders, where he set five records, including one for the league’s longest punt return (109 yards), a mark that stood for 22 years.
In 1954, Johnson, who was known as a dominant force on both sides of the ball, spent a memorable season suiting up alongside legendary Giants like Frank Gifford, Eddie Price, Emlen Tunnell and Tom Landry. The team’s offensive coordinator was another legend in the making, Vince Lombardi.

Johnson finished third on the team in rushing, led the Giants in return yards and scored two touchdowns that season, including a 48-yard punt return for a score against the NFL champion Cleveland Browns.
After the ’54 season, Johnson knew it was time to put football behind him and concentrate on an engineering career. “I had played three years in high school, three years in college, a year in Canada and now a year with the Giants,” he said. “All those years had taken their toll on me. You hurt a lot on Monday morning.”
Michael, the oldest of seven Johnson children, recalls the stories he heard as a child of his father nursing his achy body. “He would have to sit in a tub of ice or hot water because of the pain from the game,” Michael said. “After a while, it was too much. The players didn’t have the equipment that they have now, but the game had the same violence it has today.”
Herb Johnson was an entrepreneur in the electronics industry, his son explained. “He worked for a number of years with Sperry, before realizing that he could do real well in the sales side of engineering,” Michael said. “Ultimately, he started his own electronics business here on Long Island, very specifically with firms tied into the military like Grumman, Fairchild and Bendix during the big build years here.”

1970 New York Giants Outlook

“The same cannot be said for the Giant defensive line. He is where the team has risen or fallen (mostly fallen) the last few years. For a long stretch, the New York pass rush was nonexistent; last season the pass rush improved. The rookie end, Fred Dryer, played solidly, and tackles Bob Lurtsema and Joe Szczecko began to penetrate more frequently. But the Giant line did not improve against the run.
'Our line gave up 4.4 yards per try on the ground last year,' says defensive coach Norb Hecker, 'and that's too much.' Which is another reason for that Homer Jones trade with Cleveland. In exchange, the Giants not only got runner Ron Johnson, they picked up defensive tackle Jim Kanicki, a 270-pound seven-year pro. Kanicki rushes the passer hard, but he is equally well rated for his ability to stop the run. The Giants also surrendered a draft pick to get 245-pound tackle Jerry Shay from Atlanta and signed former Boston Patriot tackle Dennis Byrd. Thus the Giants believe they have stabilized the middle of their defensive line.”

-Brenda and Jack Zanger, Pro Football 1970

“1974 Profile: Jerry Shay

Scout
"Former Giants defensive tackle Jerry Shay serves as the Giants' scout in the Western States area, including the West Coast and several other states such as Wyoming, Montana and the Dakotas. A native of Gary, Indiana, the 30-year-old Shay played for the Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Falcons and Giants before a broken leg in the final game of the 1970 season ended his career.
A 6-3, 250-pounder, Jerry was the Vikings' No. 1 draft choice in 1966 after an All-American career at Purdue. He played two years with the Vikings, then was traded to the Falcons in 1968 where he was a starting tackle for two years. Jerry came to the Giants in 1970 and was a starter for all of that season, a 9-5 year for the Giants. He never fully recovered from the broken leg and retired after the 1971 season, in which he appeared in only six games, and has served as a scout since 1972.
An All-American for two years at Purdue, Jerry was born in Gary into a family named Dzedzeji (since changed to Shay.)"

-1974 New York Giants Media Guide

Hamnik Northwest Indiana Times: 2011-12 Giants owe much to Gary native and veteran scout Jerry Shay (1-28-2012)

“He also starred for Atlanta and then the Giants before retiring late in the 1971 season after breaking his leg in 13 places against the Los Angeles Rams.
"I've had 25 surgeries since I quit. I've got artificial hips, artificial knees, a plate in my arm, a plate in my neck. But I'd go back," he said.
"I'd still play for what I played for back then — $36,500 as a sixth-year starter."

Raanan NJ.com: Check out Michael Strahan's scouting report that landed the Hall of Famer with the Giants

“Giants Director of Player Personnel Tom Boistune's Director's Report:
(compiled from reports by scouts Jerry Shay, Jeremiah Davis, Greg Gabriel)
A tall, gd looking athlete who needs bulk & additional stg for next level--He has plenty of QAB's spd & change of direction to be a VG pass rusher--No reason why he can't grow into a power rush, neutralize & control LOS type--An upfield player for Texas So/not a leverage player & runs self out of too many plays--Michael is agg & works hard in pursuit--Potential to be a top player in NFL--A situational pass rusher 1st yr-Sr Bowl/Indy workout helped his grade.
Translation: A tall good-looking athlete who needs bulk and additional strength for next level. He has plenty of quickness, agility, balance, speed and change of direction to be a very good pass rusher. No reason why he can't grow into a power rusher, neutralize and control line-of-scrimmage type. An upfield player for Texas Southern. Not a leverage player and runs himself out of too many players. Michael is aggressive and works hard in pursuit. Potential to be a top player in NFL. A situational pass-rusher first year. Senior Bowl and Indy [Combine] workout helped his grade.
The Giants' personnel department pretty much nailed this one. They noted Strahan wasn't perfect, but they also thought he had the "potential to be a top player in NFL."
That's pretty good. It's not often you land one of the league's best players in the second round, at No. 40 overall.
But it didn't happen overnight either, as the scouting report predicted. Strahan needed to "grow into a power rusher." He didn't have his first double-digit sack season until his fifth year.”

Dave Tollefson DE OAK PSQ 2007 NYG 2007-2011 7-10-1982

Jeff Pearlman: Dave Tollefson Q& A (1-26-2019)
“Dave’s story, in particular, is otherworldly. He was a kid from Northern California who jumped from junior college to Fresno State to working at a Home Depot to Division II ball to being plucked by the Green Bay Packers with the 253rd pick in the 2006 NFL Draft. That he wound up playing on two Super Bowl champions is a testament to doggedness, to hard work, to believing in oneself...”

“J.P.: I’m a New Yorker. I come from a family of Giant fans. That said, like most people I gave the Giants a 0.00% chance of winning Super Bowl XLII. Am I wondering—what did you think, heading into the game? Were you sure you’d win? Were you sorta sure? Not sure?
D.T.: As you know we played the Patriots the last game of that regular season. After watching the film of that game, we felt that if we had the opportunity to play them again, we would beat them. Well, we got to play them again and our confidence was sky high. We not only thought that we were going to beat them, we knew we were. It was honestly a kind of a weird feeling. They were undefeated and one of the best teams to ever take a field in NFL history, but we had Eli Manning.”
