Surprised? - Not surprised?

Justified? - Not justified?

Out of curiosity, just glanced over 2019 preliminary fantasy player rankings for drafting purposes. Think it was ESPN, might have been NFL.com.

Noticed that Eli was not in the top 30 QBs ranking. This surprised me. I would say:

SURPRISED / NOT JUSTIFIED

what say you?
Not surprised

Many Giants fans have a very different view of Eli than non-Giants fans/media.

I'll leave it at that.

Even if you don't think Eli contributes much to the team's offensive struggles, the results the past few years don't inspire confidence as offensive production goes. Can't imagine he'd make a good fantasy play.
So there are 30 better FF qb options than Eli?
djm : 7/10/2019 12:17 pm : link
Yeah, that’s just negligence on their part.
it's also fantasy football
Rocky369 : 7/10/2019 12:18 pm : link
I'm sure he's not ranked the 30th worst QB overall on gameday or in Madden.
Not surprised from a Fantasy Football
ZogZerg : 7/10/2019 12:29 pm : link
perspective.
He was ranked 16th last year in points (in some leagues). He didn't throw many TDs and losing OBJ doesn't help that. He also doesn't get any rushing yards or TDs. And then there is Daniel Jones waiting in the wings.
Tony Romo was a fantasy football Superstar!!
since1925 : 7/10/2019 12:34 pm : link
He never won sh#t. That tells you everything you need to know about fantasy football. It is truly based on fantasy accomplishments. It's relationship to real football is tenuous at best.
From fantasy?

not surprised at all

First of all, the Giants offense looks to be build around Saquon and a short passing game. Saquon is going to be a top 3 pick in every fantasy draft. So you need to consider that.

Second, I think they are factoring in that Jones is likely to get playing time at some point this season, and could happen early.

That Eli is not going to produce any rushing yards or QB sneak TDs, he's not an attractive fantasy QB.
Not surprising at all
Johnny5 : 7/10/2019 12:48 pm : link
Other than Beckham or Barkley, who on our offense would anyone take from a FF perspective for the past 4 years... lol?

I am hoping with better OL play that changes this year, but yeah.
In a 2 QB FF league, he's drafted very late
V.I.G. : 7/10/2019 12:54 pm : link
In a 1QB league he is an undrafted 2nd streamer at best. Will be very opponent / game script dependent. Makes sense to me.

There are no FF points for audibling to the right play.

Engram and Shepard have both been FF starters the last couple of years.

From a FF perspective, Eli has very little FF upside compared to most of the other QBs outside the top 15. He also has the looming threat of being replaced by Jones this year if the Giants aren't in the playoff hunt. Most FF analysts feel they won't be and thus are discounting Eli's potential due to the number of games they think he will play before being replaced.
Even from a FF perspective

You mean to tell me that there are 29 QB's that will put up more points then him? I find that hard to believe.

Fair enough but you get my point. I'm sure no one was fighting over drafting Engram or Shep... at least not before this year.

Engram has been drafted as a top 7 TE the last 2 years and was going in the round 5-7 range.

Most people outside of extreme fans of Eli expect a QB drafted at 6 to start sometime this season based on the Giants and Eli's play the last 2 years. They may very well be wrong. I do not draft a QBs in Eli's situation, ever.
Eli's situation
Thegratefulhead : 7/10/2019 1:32 pm : link
Defined by me, is that of an aging, veteran QB whose team has played poorly that drafted a QB high in the first round.

OK that's actually good news... lol. Still, only 2 successful FF players over the last 4 years, and add in Barkley last year. Not exactly people beating down the doors to draft Giants offensive players. I really am expecting that to change this year, based on year 2 in the system and better OL play. I have a feeling we surprise the rest of the league this year. Maybe it's just my eternal preseason optimism.
There is no upside really to drafting Eli which kills his fantasy valu
Zeke's Alibi : 7/10/2019 1:55 pm : link
Even if he plays all 16 games and Giants perform moderately well, this is going to be a ball control offense centered around Barkley. No way Eli throws for more than 30 tds this year. Eli is great in real life because he doesn't get hurt, but fantasy is all about per game stats. Starting qb is hurt this week? No problem can usually find a decent starting option on waiver.
ESPN FF football outlook
Thegratefulhead : 7/10/2019 2:27 pm : link
2019 OUTLOOK:
Manning finished 2018 as the No. 17 scoring quarterback, which marked his first top 20 since 2015. Incredibly, the 38-year-old has posted one season better than 10th over the past 13 seasons. Manning has devolved into a conservative passer as he's ranked bottom 10 in aDOT each of the past two seasons. He isn't particularly efficient and offers very little with his legs with 37 rushing yards on 48 carries over the past three seasons. The Giants improved their offensive line, but swapped out Odell Beckham Jr. for Golden Tate during the offseason, which suggests New York is likely ticketed for a low-scoring, run-first offense heavy on short-area passing. Manning, who figures to defer some late-season starts to Daniel Jones, shouldn't be drafted in most formats.
That ESPN blurb is a fair..
FatMan in Charlotte : 7/10/2019 2:31 pm : link
assessment on Manning's fantasy worth.

To contend in FF, you better have a QB that will throw for over 25TD's and be a threat to run as well. Even if it is like Brees with a couple QB sneak TD's a year.

It's not just total points, which Eli ends up looking better in because he plays every game. It's points per week that is much more meaningful. Eli was around 16th in total points for QBs depending on scoring system, but he was 24th in points per game last year amongst QBs who played at least 8 games..
If Eli starts 16 games
dep026 : 7/10/2019 3:24 pm : link
He will be around 15-18. FF loves guys like Mariotta and the Josh Allen types. They get rushing yards which makes them more valuable.

Those other guys probably have upside Eli doesn't have

Eli is undraftable in FF. If I HAD to draft a NYG QB, I would only draft Jones

i dont think

i would take Eli on my FF team.

So.... I think i agree

Somehow Eli goes for over 4400 yards 30+ TDS, 12 INTs and maybe 2 rushing TDs

All the fantasy experts will proclaim he was their sleeper.
Very low TD % rate, doesn’t run at all
Jimmy Googs : 7/10/2019 7:07 pm : link
and just lost his top WR. And now if team struggles he may not even get in a full season in 2019.

If you’re surprised...
Fantasy football rankings
steve in ky : 7/10/2019 7:13 pm : link
would also likely factor in that the Giants selected Jones so highly and factor in the chance of Eli possibly sitting at some point this season. Or at least possibly pulled in lopsided games.

Fantasy rankings don't mean too much in this type situation.

Yeah, I am surprised from a fantasy POV. Especially since Engram was a top 4 TE, Shepard was like #35 and Tate was in the high 40's and then you have Barkely who will get a tremendous amount of catches and is always a threat to break some of them for TDs. Eli's TD/Int ratio was better last year and could well improve with a much improved OL so yeah, I am surprised Eli is not a top 30 if not top 20 QB. So much so, that I rebooked the top 30 a good 3 or 4 times. Sure that I had somehow missed his name. That's why I posted this. Seems most responders on here aren't that surprised by it. Oh well, I hope Eli has a tremendous year and surprises the fork out of everyone. Go out with a bang!!
