What is a premier Free Safety worth?

Klaatu : 7/10/2019 12:09 pm
With the DB discussion in Eric's Positional Breakdown thread in mind, I feel that the Giants have much more uncertainty at the Safety position going forward than at Cornerback, even though they're relying on a very young and inexperienced crop of CB's to successfully make the jump from college to the pros. Of course only time will tell if their investments will pay off, but even taken with a large grain of salt, the early returns have been positive.

At Safety, though, clearly the Giants are banking on Jabrill Peppers to make up for the loss of Landon Collins. That's as may be (as the Brits say). Again, only time will tell if the Giants made the right call in letting Collins leave and acquiring Peppers. But the Giants are also banking on Antoine Bethea to start at FS, and no matter how "ageless" he is, "time is the predator that stalks us all," and at 35, Bethea is probably not in the team's long-term plans. The real problem is that there isn't much talent behind either Peppers or Bethea.

So, looking ahead to 2020, would you prefer the Giants draft a Free Safety relatively high, or would you rather see them try and sign a very good one in free agency?

I've seen a couple of mocks that had the Giants picking in the top ten and taking LSU's Grant Delpit. That would annoy me, as I'm hoping for an OT in the 1st Round, but if Delpit is all that he's cracked up to be and he's there when the Giants are on the clock, it wouldn't surprise me to see them draft him. I think the odds are greater that they'll wait for the second or third day to address the position, but you never know.

Assuming they're not re-signed by their current teams before they hit the open market, the top-tier FA FS's are estimated to cost between $50-$60 million, anywhere from four to six years. Lesser players, starters (but not stars), will command lower salaries, but the cost would still be significant. Would you want to see the Giants commit that much to the position? They'll have the cash, but would it be better spent on a RT or ILB?

Or, do you think there's anyone on the roster now who will be able to supplant Bethea at FS? Let me know what you think.
The Giants wouldn't have a clue at all

When it comes to anything about Free Safety.
a FS with top ball skills is worth as much as a top CB
Eric on Li : 7/10/2019 12:17 pm : link
they can impact the passing game just as much, and more so in the middle of the field which is the toughest area to cover consistently.

Simply put - Earl Thomas in his prime was just as valuable as Richard Sherman in his prime, possibly even more valuable. And both were a lot more valuable than Kam Chancellor.

Any team would be lucky to be paying top dollar for the next Earl Thomas, the challenge is finding someone as good as Earl Thomas.
Notable that we really wanted Devin McCourty

when he was due for his 2nd contract, but he is one of the few that Belichick and the Pats paid a lot to keep

I think kiper has Delpit ranked second on his early big board

Dave Gettleman drafted Tre Boston in the 4th Round. He's a pain-in-the-ass but he's a damned good Safety.

The previous regime, for all of their misfires, did sign Antrel Rolle, who helped them win another Super Bowl.
I'm guessing that Sam Beal or Julian Love may get some time at

free safety and eventually take over the position.
Probably more than most estimate
Coach Red Beaulieu : 7/10/2019 12:36 pm : link
As others pointed out, Little Bill gave McCourty a big contract, and he's always state of the art. And Thomas was the linchpin of that Seattle D.

They signed Antrel a decade ago... haven't done much about the position since... and it's been one of the main reasons for our struggles on defense.... year after year after year....
They may try Love at FS

With Haley possibly manning the slot CB position, FS is the biggest need going forward and they say Love has the skills to play there. Worth a try.

The previous regime drafted Kenny Phillips 32nd overall, and was righfully thrilled with the pick, as was the fanbase generally, until it turned out KP had an arthritic (was that it?) knee or two.

Agree strongly with the above good post by Eric on LI, too.

Gettleman's been here for two years, and took over a team that was crappy across the board.

Was Curtis Riley a bad signing? In retrospect, yes, but no doubt he was vouched for by Deshea Townsend, who coached him in Tennessee. On the other hand, Michael Thomas played pretty well, especially on ST's.

I think Gettleman made the right call in not re-signing Collins, or trading him for a 4th Round pick, not when it looks like we'll get a 3rd Round comp pick for him. I view Peppers as an ascending player, but I'd still like to see how he fares in Bettcher's defense.

Antoine Bethea is a placeholder for a position that will in all likelihood be upgraded next year in either free agency or the draft, or by someone already on the roster.

There's no good reason to make a blanket statement about the Giants not having a clue when it comes to Free Safeties when we're only in the second year of the Gettleman regime, and again, he did draft Tre Boston, not to mention signing Kurt Coleman and Roman Harper who all helped Carolina get to the Super Bowl.
Andrew Adams had a better year for Tampa
Ten Ton Hammer : 7/10/2019 3:28 pm : link
than any of the junk they played at FS in 2018. That was a mistake.

If you buy what PFF is selling, Adams and Curtis Riley had virtually the same grade, and the Bucs had no problem letting Adams go to Detroit (for the same money Riley got from Oakland, as it turned out - $720,000). So if it was a mistake, it wasn't a very egregious one.
Not egregious, hes a spare part
Ten Ton Hammer : 7/10/2019 5:53 pm : link
But Riley outright quit at the end of the hear so there is that.
But the best part is that not only did Gettleman let Riley go...
Klaatu : 7/10/2019 5:56 pm : link
He got rid of Townsend, too.
It's just my opinion but we have been 38-58 the last 6 years
90.Cal : 7/10/2019 6:26 pm : link
Because of a complete failure by the front office to correctly address OT, FS, MLB. These positions have killed this football team in key game moments over the years. It's just my opinion I'm not bashing or slamming this team just pointing out the obvious that they haven't been able to identify the right FS for several years now and some years this team didn't even address the FS position at all when it has always been a big need IN MY OPINION.
Didnt make sense not playing Adams
90.Cal : 7/10/2019 6:28 pm : link
Never understood that decision.

Said the same thing about trading Jones and keeping Halapio. I hope Halapio proves wrong and plays well, we need that big time. He has gotten alot of praises too.

Are you seriously blaming Dave Gettleman, who became the GM last year, for the poor performance of the team for the five years before that when another GM ran the team? How does that make any sense?
