davis webb

sound familiar?
He looked good in gmen offseason too
Gotta admit I did think he would make team last yr

Via Hughes, former Giants’ third-rounder Davis Webb had an impressive offseason program, so impressive that he apparently jumped Siemian late in the OTA process. Hughes writes that Webb was the second quarterback to take the field during the final set of OTAs.

Hughes adds that the Jets would like to keep only two quarterbacks on the final 53-man roster. Siemian, however, has $1 million of his one-year, $2 million contract fully guaranteed. (He already has earned a $750,000 signing bonus.) So cutting Siemian and keeping Webb (who has a non-guaranteed salary of $645,000) would create enhanced expense and wasted money.

It also would create the risk that, if the Jets need Siemian later, he won’t be available. Whether he’s signed by another NFL team or by the fledgling XFL — which plans to gobble up third- and fourth-string quarterbacks who are cut from NFL rosters — Siemian could be long gone if/when an injury creates a reason to bring him back.

Ditto for Webb, who also could land with another team, or with the XFL.

Another option, as Hughes notes, would be to trade Webb, who was regarded as having a bright future before he washed out with the Giants. Maybe that future is getting brighter, whether it’s with the Jets, another NFL team, or ultimately as one of the eight starters for Vince McMahon’s resurrected spring league.

that doesnt mean I think he is the next jonas seawright
Payasdaddy : 7/10/2019 6:48 pm : link
Just that I actually thought he "may" have had a chance to develop
Has tools, just didnt process fast enough? accuracy? feel for game?
you couldn't
Bill in UT : 7/10/2019 6:48 pm : link
trade him for shit
I like Webb
PatersonPlank : 7/10/2019 7:00 pm : link
I think he'll have some kind of career in the NFL, maybe a career backup or bottom rung starter type of thing.
AGREED WE COULDNT TRADE HIM
Payasdaddy : 7/10/2019 7:17 pm : link
Just thought cutting him 2nd yr in was abrupt
they may do same with lauletta it doesnt click fast
would rather keep him vs tanney slight upside at least
I always liked Webb
Torrag : 7/10/2019 7:25 pm : link
Definitely saw more in him in terms of arm talent and work ethic than I have in lauletta. He should have been the backup last year but Shurmur was instrumental in drafting Lauletta and that's that.
I’m still a fan of Davis
GoDeep13 : 7/10/2019 7:34 pm : link
And I don’t think he was given a real chance. He could still be a good QB
He seems to have
Gman11 : 7/10/2019 7:44 pm : link
all the physical tools, but I'm not sure he can do it mentally. When he was with the Giants I read stories about how he wrote everything down and kept them in binders. It seemed that nothing came instinctively. That, to me, said that he wansn't NFL material.

Maybe he'll tear it up in the XFL.
Webb could well get a shot somewhere and develop
mfsd : 7/10/2019 7:58 pm : link
but no way he has trade value, unless someone loses 2+ QBs to injury in preseason.

Seemed like he was cut loose bc the new regime didn’t draft him (not that Lauletta looked that great) and bc he was quoted in the papers far too often for a backup QB who’s never done shit in a real game.

Doesn’t mean he’s finished, but will likely take injuries for him to get a chance with the Jets
.
Amazinz : 7/10/2019 8:08 pm : link
Not sure what the point is.

It's like a Lil' Greg or Ten Ton Crap post but...

I'd rather have Webb than Lauletta at this point.
Was really no point
Payasdaddy : 7/10/2019 8:46 pm : link
Was on pft and being it slow on news this time of yr
Worth a rehash.
Obviously a lot more interested in d Jones development this yr
Than d Webb

It's the davis webb career update you've been waiting for.

DavidinBMNY : 7/10/2019 10:23 pm : link
Webb completely blew his preseason audition. He was wild and ineffective when he was given the nod. That is all you need to know. This is not intramurals. You sink or swim in professional football. He sank. Using am excuse like he was over hyped and excited is unacceptable. For one throw sure. One series Ok. One game - get out of here. He is a perrenial backup / coach on waiting.
..
broadbandz : 7/11/2019 1:05 am : link
Lauletta has more talent than Webb. Lauletta played with a bad knee all last year and can still develop into a good backup. Davis had his time to learn and still shit the bed in preseason.

I'm no fan of Lauletta, but Webb didn't play well in the preseason at all (he looked awful). Unfortunately, despite all the press of him replacing email, he couldn't even make the team. It was more Webb's doing than Shurmur favoring Lauletta.

I think you can crack the case if you want - a July 2019er made a Jonas Seawright reference. I think you can probably sort it out from there...

He works as hard as anyone yada yada yada. It obviously doesn't translate over to the football field. Despite his hard work, being the son of a football coach, and years of experience he still struggles with accuracy and reading defenses.

I the only one wondering why every few months there is another thread on Davis Webb? Like everyone else, I wish him all the best, but it has been nearly a year since he was on the Giants. Will we have the same number of threads through this time next year about Lauletta if he is cut at the end of preseason and ends up on another team?

Webb was awful in his time with the team. He couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with the football. This was the same guy he was in college. It should set off alarm bells that for a guy who supposedly worked hard, he didn't improve much with accuracy from college.

Davis Webb will probably never play in an actual NFL game so that is going to be hard. Any other weird thoughts you have?
I'm still on the Davis-Webb-will-play bandwagon.
CT Charlie : 7/11/2019 1:20 pm : link
His first preseason game was abysmal, but he showed some good flashes afterwards. I think Shurmur really liked Lauletta in college -- and the scramble TD -- so that's why Webb was released. Gut feeling says Webb will ultimately see more NFL action than Lauletta.
i think there is a better chance that Webb catches on as a position

Seems to me that keeping Webb is still cheaper, despite the sunk cost of Siemian’s guaranteed money.

Imagine if Daniel Jones ends up better than Darnold.

There's actually a good chance of that. There's virtually no chance Webb will even get a chance to show he's better than any QB

Still whining like a ridiculous douche.

I dunno... sounds like Josh is willing to kick himself in the nuts if FMiC's scenario plays out and Jones becomes better than Darnold...

Well both decisions belong to DG and PS. No to Darnold and yes to Jones. I'm rooting for Jones...big time.

of you are quite defensive about a little joke that is virtually implausible to happen in reality. But unfortunately, that's what most posters on this site have become after having to incessantly defend Eli's ineptitude over the past decade and now transposing that sentiment towards Daniel Jones due to their insecurity over where he was drafted. Sad.
And with that being said...

So from 2014-2016 where Eli threw for 91 TDs and average of over 4300 yards with 1 legitimate offensive threat - is something we should look down upon?
