He is on an innings cap. If he throws more than 122.2 innings he would be subject to the Verducci Effect which states any young pitcher who makes a 30% jump in innings pitched from the previous year greatly increases his chances of injury. Severino made that 30% jump last year and well you see what happened.

Now German is much older at 26 and logged a lot of minor league innings in his arm. So he might be less vulnerable to the Verducci Effect. But the Yankees believe in it and it has been very accurate.

Really? Rucco sounded like a complete moron last night trying to decide if Gardner's run should count when Judge got thrown out at first after his strikeout. Then someone finally got back in his ear saying it doesn't matter if Gardner touched home plate before Judge got thrown out. Then he has to explain to everybody else after the commercial break why that is the case when he was the only idiot contemplating if the score should have been 5-0.

I don't mind Kay announcing games at all. I think he does a very good job and blends well with all of the guys he works with. I'm not saying Rucco cannot do that but if you are going to announce a game at least know the rules. This wasn't some obscure rule and baseball is not a complicated game where owners fuck up rules every offseason like the NFL does by over-complicating rules. I think Kag does a great job interviewing guys on Center Stage. I am not a big fan of his radio show but that has to do more with his lack of knowledge on other sports but yet he still has strong opinions about something without the knowledge/facts to back it up. But in terms of calling a game he doesn't bother me at all.

It had more to do with he started to hang some pitches in the 6th, according to Boone postgame.
Age has a lot to do with appropriately innings jumps
Dunedin81 : 7/13/2019 9:10 am : link
German has the injury concerns, but at his age the 30-inning "rule" is less applicable.
Question
Nine-Tails : 7/13/2019 9:14 am : link
About innings limit and the above stated Verducci effect. Teams place an innings limit and when a pitcher reaches it is will then be shut down. Do teams do more advanced analysis like total pitches thrown? Hypothetical, if a guy averaged 10-12 pitches per inning, would it make sense that he has the same innings limit as guy who averaged 15 pitches per inning?
The smarter teams factor it in, I'm sure...
Dunedin81 : 7/13/2019 9:16 am : link
And remember, official innings may undercount rehab outings, EXST, and other situations where they're throwing at full bore or close to it. A lot of that data is not publicly available.

Ok good, just that I never heard about. Giving a guy 150 innings limit before the season seemed lazy. Good to know that teams do more in depth analysis

I recall reading somewhere, dont remember where, that teams dont just track IP, but high stress innings. To your point, a 25 pitch grind of an inning is different than a 1-2-3 on 12 pitches

German seems to be cruising through a lot of innings, based on eyeball test I dont think hes been over stressed. But I also dont think the Yanks plan to use him much more than 6 IP or so each time out
Can they plan to use German
beatrixkiddo : 7/13/2019 10:04 am : link
post season if he has an innings limit?

I'm just wondering where he currently stands, and when he is likely to hit that mark. It would be a shame to not see him pitch post season he has been our best pitcher all year. Wonder if there is some way they can extend him out to plan for that, either add another to starting rotation (probably would help out Tanaka and Paxton as well), or like someone else said, just plan on using him no more than 6IP a game. IDK, I think German is a key piece to our post season success, and hope they have a plan.

If they can maintain and even extend the division lead it will give them plenty of opportunity to push German back some starts and skip his turn all together at times. His innings will be fine
