MAN CHARGED IN SIMMONS MURDER: 18-year-old Francisco Alejandro Mendez has been charged in connection with Dwane Simmons' murder and injuring Corey Ballentine.
My guess is that he was raised in an environment where he was never taught the value of a human life. I'm not preaching here but I believe young people need a solid moral compass during adolescence. Without that, "Do what thou wilt" becomes the standard.
Some gangs require members to randomly kill someone
Hopefully the 18 year old himself is not beyond redemption and can accept full responsibility for taking another young man's life, willfully. And then move on from there...
I suppose Ballantine will have to return to Kansas to testify. I hate myself for worrying about how that would impact his season, but there it is.
The accused being so young himself, one would hope that a deal can be worked out so that he doesn't even consider taking his defense to trial, and the presumptive result of a much harsher, virtually life eradicating, penalty for his action.
Assuming the kid already actually feels some remorse - which I have no idea about.
he shot two people killing one.
if you think there is a chance this 'kid' to have a normal life i think you are kidding yourself
In all likelihood you're right. But fuggit, the perp is only 18 - a kid. And they are still looking, apparently for Ballentine's shooter. Right now they seem to have this kid in custody only for Simmons' death.
I know it's a quasi-political statement, but fucksake it's too easy to get a gun in this friggen country. We're pretty much alone in the civilized world on that score.

So what he is only eighteen. He killed another young man in cold blood. If found guilty he doesn't deserve to see the light of day as a free man.

He's 18 years old and will be tried as an adult. His age and that fact that some of you still think of 18 yrs old as a "kid" has nothing to do with what the ruling will be.
One person is dead and this guy's life is over at 18. Congrats.
