Brooks NFL.com: Ranking defensive triplets; new team-building trend

“1) New RB trend influencing team-building formula. Instead of bypassing talented runners in lieu of "value picks" in the mid-to-late rounds, savvy executives are using top picks to secure blue-chip RBs for their teams to provide stability and cost certainty at a position that remains valuable in the team-building formula.
Now, I know we've been conditioned to believe NFL running backs can be found at your local YMCA, but just look at the most recent first-round selections. You won't find many busts at the position. From Ezekiel Elliott (two-time NFL rushing champ) to Todd Gurley (2017 Offensive Player of the Year) to Christian McCaffrey (one of only three players with 1,000 rush yards and 100 catches in a single season) to Saquon Barkley (2018 Offensive Rookie of the Year and one of three rookies in history to surpass 2,000 scrimmage yards), first-round running backs are living up to the hype as playmakers for their respective squads. Additionally, they are centerpieces to an offensive puzzle who alleviate the pressure of a quarterback and enable some teams to play with a B or B+ player at the QB1 spot.
Given their overall importance to the majority of NFL offenses, it makes sense to draft running backs early and maximize their talents while they're still on team-friendly rookie deals. I know the football world typically views quarterbacks and their rookie contracts as one of the key components to building a championship team, but investing draft capital into a blue-chip running back could also become a pivotal part of the Super Bowl formula.
Before you scream bloody murder, hear me out when it comes to this theory.
Under the current terms of the NFL's collective bargaining agreement, teams have the option to exercise a fifth-year option on any player selected in the first round. By exercising the option, the team retains the rights of the player for an extra year on the standard four-year contract without needing to negotiate with the player. For players selected within the top 10, the fifth-year option is equal to the average of the top-10 salaries at the position. For players selected 11th through 32nd overall, the fifth-year option is equal to the average of the third through 25th highest salaries for the position from the previous year. This provides the team with cost certainty for five years while also giving the franchise the right to retain the player at the end of the five-year deal on a series of franchise tags that could keep a marquee running back in the fold for seven or eight years at reasonable prices.
That's why the Steelers were willing to string out Le'Veon Bell on a series of franchise tags at the end of his rookie contract instead of forking over big money on an extended deal that featured significant guarantees. It is also the reason the Dallas Cowboys could be slow-playing Ezekiel Elliott on an extension because they know they have him under contract for the next few years regardless of whether he likes it or not. It's also the ploy the Los Angeles Chargers could be using to take advantage of Melvin Gordon while he's in the prime of his career.
Looking at the Oakland Raiders' decision to give Josh Jacobs a fully guaranteed deal, it makes sense because his $11.8 million salary on a four-year term will look like a bargain if he turns out to be a Gurley-like playmaker for Jon Gruden's squad. Plus, the team will have an opportunity to keep him in the fold for a few extra years on a series of franchise tags that will likely take him through his prime years as a player.
The Patriots are notoriously frugal when it comes to players and compensation, yet they dropped a first-round pick on Sony Michel to anchor their running game. Is that a coincidence? I don't think so. Bill Belichick is typically at the forefront of the team-building trends, and the Patriots' decision to invest draft capital in a running back could signify a new way of doing business.
Keep in mind, Raiders general manager Mike Mayock enjoyed a solid relationship with Belichick when he worked with us at NFL Network. He could be following a blueprint that enables to the Raiders to build a sustainable contender for the next few years while they have the offensive firepower to challenge any team in the AFC.
In fact, the recent investments in running backs remind me of my time as a scout with the Carolina Panthers and how we viewed running backs as important pieces of the offensive puzzle, particularly when we had an average quarterback in place as our QB1. John Fox and Marty Hurney believed in drafting a top running back in the first round and leaning on him to carry the load as the workhorse on a run-heavy offense. Additionally, they believed in drafting a blue-chip successor when the RB1 was heading into the final year of his deal to give the team a solid plan for the future.
There are still executives in the league who share this opinion when it comes to running backs and how they should fit into the team-building puzzle.
"Draft them high and ride them until the wheels fall off," an AFC executive told me. "I don't know if I could commit a second contract to them (running backs), but I would keep them on a series of one-year deals to squeeze out as much juice out of them while they're in their prime.
"I don't mind paying a premium for them while they're playing well, but I don't want to get caught holding the bag when they start to decline."
With the Raiders following a path that others have recently blazed, we might be onto a trend that serves as the new blueprint for building a title contender in coming years.”

PARKER SEEKING NEW-TYPE QB
SEPTEMBER 20 (Pittsburgh Press) - “The strategy of the Detroit Lions during the years they were winning championships provides the first solid clue to the Steelers' frantic, last-minute search for a quarterback. It
appears that Coach Buddy Parker is looking for a combination runner-passer, a drastic departure from the type of quarterback the Steelers have used in the past.
Joe Bach and Walt Kiesling, Parker's predecessors, emphasized passing; running was incidental. Parker has changed the pattern to the extent that his
quarterback must do both. In the last week, the former Detroit coach has acquired rookie Jack Kemp from the Lions and sophomore Earl Morrall from the SanFrancisco Forty-Niners, both of whom have one things in common. Each is big enough and strong enough to develop into a heavy-duty ball carrier. Morrall is 6-1, 195 pounds; the six-foot Kemp weighs 200. The acquisition of this pair leaves the future of veteran Ted Marchibroda and rookie Len Dawson up in the air. Neither is regarded as a powerhouse runner. When in a position to do so, Parker made good use of his quarterback as a runner. Bobby Layne, for example, was a key in Detroit's ground game. In 1952-53, before he was stricken with an arm injury, the sturdily-built Texan carried the ball 181 times, second only to Hunchy Hoernschmeyer, the Lions' bread-and-butter back who carried 207 times over the same span. Of NFL coaches, Parker is the only one who uses the option play as an integral part of his offense.”

MVP Profile: Jack Kemp, 1965

“The road to pro football success was a difficult one for Kemp, taken in the 17th round of the 1957 NFL draft by the Detroit Lions after playing collegiately at little Occidental College. He saw scant action in the preseason but, after Head Coach Buddy Parker resigned and then took over in Pittsburgh, he was traded to the Steelers and threw a total of 18 passes during his rookie year. Waived a game into the 1958 season, he caught on with the New York Giants and saw no action as a member of the taxi squad. Failing to catch on with Calgary of the CFL in ’59, he sat out the season and went back to college, but appeared to get another chance at the NFL with the 49ers before being declared ineligible due to his having signed earlier with the CFL. With the advent of the AFL in 1960, Kemp finally got his chance with the Los Angeles Chargers and led the league in passing while throwing for 3018 yards and 20 TDs (along with 25 interceptions) and a league-leading 7.4 yards per attempt...”

San Gabriel Rotarians had the pleasure of meeting Allan Barry, retired American football offensive lineman. Allan shared numerous stories of his football career and personal life. He was drafted out of college (USC) by the Green Bay Packers in 1953. He signed his first football contact to play for the Green Bay Packers for $5,750 per year.

In 1957, Allan had the opportunity to play with Hall of Fame quarterback Bart Starr. Also that season, the Packers selected the number one draft choice and Heisman Trophy winner Paul Hornung. Allan was traded in 1958 to the New York Giants were he teamed up with his former USC teammates Frank Gifford and Lindon Crow.

Allan described the first time he met Jack Kemp. Yes, Congressman Jack Kemp and vice-presidential nominee. The following is an excerpt from Allen’s book The Unknown Lineman / the lighter side of the NFL. “I saw a young man who looked to be about 17 years old with a butch haircut and freckles. I figured that I would ask him if he would clean my shoes. Allan asked a friend if that was the clubhouse boy who cleaned the player’s shoes. He responded, “No that is Jack Kemp who we just acquired from the Pittsburgh Steelers”.

Frank Gifford: WSJ: “You interviewed about as many Colts players as Giants, which allowed you to take the reader inside the Baltimore locker room as well. Did you learn anything about the Colts that surprised you?
Frank Gifford: They were very uptight. [Colts wide receiver] Raymond Berry had been thinking about writing the book himself so he kept some really copious notes. He shared all that with me. He was almost physically sick before the game. He felt so emotionally strong about the game he could hardly take it. He recalls their locker room as being absolutely so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

Meanwhile, we're over there fighting over the distribution of the championship money. I wanted Jack Kemp to get the full share. Sam Huff almost punched me out. So much for the team being one.”

One of the few players to go from HS to the NFL with no college experience when he joined the Eagles in 1944, in 1951 he joined a injury decimated Giants squad to close out the season. Later became a head football coach with Harrisburg in the ACFL in the 1960’s.

NYDN 12-05-1951 “Harmon Rowe, one of the sturdiest ribs of the Giants "umbrella defense," will be lost for the rest of the pro grid season. Coarh Steve Owen learned the bad news yesterday when X-ray reports from St. Elizabeth's Hospital showed his defensive star had suffered a fracture of the transverse process of the spine, the third spine injury to the team this season. A BRILLIANT defensive halfback for the Yanks of the AAC for three seasons before joininjt the Giants last year, Rowe helped make the Polo Grounders the best defensive club in the league. During the first half of the Steeler game last Sunday, he hurt his back. Rowe finished the period, but suffered muscular spa.sms near his spine in the clubhous during intermission. He dressed quickly and rushed to the hospital. He's been there ever since, and will be bedded for about a week.

ROOKIE END Bill Stribling and soph quarterback Travis Tidwell suffered the same type of spine injury earlier in the year, and have been uselea since. Rowe's berth will be manned the rest of the campaign by John Amberg, versatile recruit from Kansas. Though all four members of the famed umbrella defense have missed some games because of injury this season, the Giants still boast the best all-around defense in the b ague. At the weekly luncheon in the Polo Grounds yesterday for pro grid scribes, Owen proudly announced that latest league statistics showed the Giant line yielding the lowest yardage in the league by a margin of more than T00 yards. The secondary is surpassed only by Los Angeles for yardage allowed per pass. Despite the loss of Rowe, the Giants will he solid favorites in next Sunday's game at Philadelphia.

The locals will lie using two former Eagle favorites against their teammates, halfback Bosh Pritchard and guard Duke Maronic.

OWEN REITERATED that Kyle Rote, costly rookie quarterback, injured early in the year, will not be used the rest of the campaign, except for possible spot kicking assignments.”

Regurgitate every bit of negativity thrown the Giants way for the past few months, add your own brand of snark, avoid any semblance of objective analysis, and you, too, could write for the Daily News.

I'm not saying you have to be a "homer" or put an overtly positive spin on things. There's no question the Giants have been a bad team for a long time. But if you can't see that there's a new regime in place trying hard to correct the mistakes of the past, then what's your point other than shit-stirring?

Gettleman was dealt a bad hand from the get-go, and no one in their right mind thought he could turn things around overnight. He's had some missteps, but he's got things pointed in the right direction, in my opinion, and the future looks brighter than it has in years. I just don't see any reason to continue dumping on the guy, not at this stage of the game.

To your point, Lupica makes this observation - " Accorsi, of course, is the guy who made the draft-day trade for Eli Manning and changed the course of Giants history." Acorsi could have also not made the trade, and instead drafted Big Ben who was still available, and the change to Giants history would have been equally positive, it not more so. Lupica makes the easy, lazy call here.
