NFT: 7/13 Knicks Chat: Old Knicks coming to the rescue

Amare Stoudemire
Quote:
"I signed with the Knicks because of James Dolan."

Next. Nate Robinson said this.
Quote:
“Guys are going to choose where they want to go. Me personally I would never choose any team over the New York Knicks. I had a great opportunity, an awesome time here in New York. It was great and I don’t understand how guys can pass up on it.

Couple notes:

15 Man Roster is all but set

PG: Dennis Smith Jr. / Elfrid Payton / Frank Ntilikina
SG: RJ Barrett / Wayne Ellington / Alonzo Trier / Damyean Dotson
SF: Marcus Morris / Kevin Knox / Iggy Brazdeikis / Reggie Bullock
PF: Julius Randle / Bobby Portis
C: Mitchell Robinson / Taj Gibson

-Dennis Smith Jr. is giving his #5 to Bobby Portis. He might go #1 since Mudiay is gone.

-Another DSJ note, he's working with CP3 and redefining his jumpshot this year.
Hard not to laugh a little at Amare’s comment

I came to the Knicks because of James Dolan. Because nobody else was going to give me a $100 million uninsurable contract with my bad knees

amare had other options, this notion he only came to the knicks because of the contract is slightly false..

along with melo could of signed as a free agent...

2 false comments people always seem to make
Listen it's no star fest but I like this roster
Torrag : 7/13/2019 12:28 pm : link
Top to bottom it has talented professionals and talented youth.

Frank being bumped down to #3 PG is a major improvement. Now they need to ship him out when the right opportunity presents itself.

Who else was going to offer Amare a full max? If wrong I stand corrected, I honestly don’t recall anyone willing to give him the deal the Knicks did.

Splitting hairs at this point, he was awesome with the Knicks before he got hurt and I don’t mean to dump on him. Curious to see how this comeback of his works out

Ah gotcha
It's a pretty big deal...
manh george : 7/13/2019 1:26 pm : link
if Smith is able to re-make his J, as he says he is doing. If he can, he becomes a clear favorite over Payton, and leads to a clear upgrade of the pg spot. If not, not.

Linked are the projected 2018 salaries. I am one of those guys who thinks the Knicks can get close to .500, but it is based on several assumption that need to be hit. These include:

1) Fizdale able to make sense of the extremely deep roster, with sensible rotations;
2) Smith actually having a much better J
3) Knox carrying a better game into the regular season. I think that the so-called experts are generally way wrong on this very you kid.
4) Barret having the game slow down for hi, a lot, so that his skills become way more apparent.
5) Robinson continuing to advance

Given all of that, I think we get near .500 based upon massively more depth, better shooting, better teamwork, better d, lack of the need to tank, and a whole bunch of veterans on one-and contracts with huge incentives to play their best. I think the one-and contracts were a great idea, creating incentives and leaving trade room and cap room for later.

Or: He needs to raise his game. As you say, there's a lot of talented youth. Young guys sometimes need time and development. Maybe Frank will step it up.
One issue with Frank
Dave on the UWS : 7/13/2019 3:03 pm : link
he hasn’t been able to stay healthy long enough to have any chance to improve.
Well if I have this right...
manh george : 7/13/2019 3:14 pm : link
we will learn more about the Frenchman in early September.

I think this is where and when he is playing. The FIBA world cup in China, starting August 31.

Fizdale
PaulN : 7/13/2019 3:19 pm : link
Is the key now, can he turn these players into a team, how long will it take? I would love to see the Knicks finish above the Nets, then we can all give Durant and Kyrie a big fuck you both.
Frank N
Svengali : 7/13/2019 4:08 pm : link
Went to 6'7" or 6'8" last year and who knows this year so he's not exactly a point guard although he can probably guard a bigger one. There's a possibility he might be very valuable this year.

Glass half full.
Frank
steve in ky : 7/13/2019 4:17 pm : link
Hopefully he stays healthy AND Fizdale gives him enough of a real chance to prove what kind of player his is one way or another.

Seems like Frank has had plenty of chances and we know what

Barrett

three straight possessions:

turnover
blocked in the paint
hogs the ball and misses a wide open Iggy
Hey I'm all for compliments, but Thomas sometimes...
ChaChing : 7/13/2019 6:30 pm : link
"It was good Knox didn't take the shot from halfcourt...drove it in and got the foul"

Well, taking a shot from HC w/ 6 seconds left is idiotic, but yeah sure. Great play. Also the contact wasn't on a drive, but he was actually bailed out dribbling sideways towards the wing instead of to the rim w/ under 3s left

But all in all KK looked good. Iggy still balling, seems like he can get you production even in limited time. Also has been a better defender / more athletic than I expected per scouting reports
Still with the idiotic split screen nonsense. Sometimes the guy OFF
ChaChing : 7/13/2019 6:34 pm : link
camera is talking while they give us the split on the main announcers watching the game saying nothing. Completely stupid. Even the split is mostly the "MGM SL" graphic and not the announcers...

Hope this doesn't happen during the season this much (tho they do it some there already)

Another one...clever little bounce pass from Iggy to Mitch for the dunk
I also must say I love MitchRob goes hard at the rim & dunk
ChaChing : 7/13/2019 6:56 pm : link
SOOO many of these guys have a dunk but go for some lame floater or unnecessary double clutch layup and miss or get blocked

Pisses me off, I mean, even aside from the better FG%, WTF wouldn't you dunk if you can? WTF is the point to being tall & playing ball
Knox also had three nice assists
shyster : 7/13/2019 6:57 pm : link
for easy buckets. Good to see.
RJ w/ an awful J...both the decision & the stroke were ugly
ChaChing : 7/13/2019 7:09 pm : link
as well as that TO

But just b4 was a sweet pass to Mitch for the oop. 7A already. There was at least 1-2 other games he probably should have had 3-4-5 more As but for fouls / misses
Knox for 3, from RJ...

All Knox did last year in Summer League
bceagle05 : 7/13/2019 7:43 pm : link
and the regular season was score. This year he's showing some passing and defense - I hope he takes it with him into the season.

he definitely got stronger to
Not bad not bad
ChaChing : 7/13/2019 7:56 pm : link
RJ got better every game

Knox to me is still wait and see, I feel like this was similar to last SL, but nice to see him start strong here

Iggy, man there's a ways to go, but he really seems to play the game right. Whatever his weaknesses, they didn't show too often in SL

Team might have had a better showing record-wise if Trier played more than 1 game

Robinson looked much the same. Not sure what to think but we'll see if he's matured come real games. Still a beast even so

Cavanaugh certainly will be on someone's G-league team, if not down the bench in the NBA for a bad team
After the bad first two games, have to be happy with Barrett
Mike in NJ : 7/13/2019 8:02 pm : link
He was much improved over the last 3 games where he averaged 20-9-6 and shot 43.2% from the floor, but only 31% from 3. Hopefully he continues to work on the shot over the rest of the summer and can at least be respectable from there this season. The defense will need to improve as well, but he shows effort and that's a good start.

Looking forward to the season and how he continues to develop.

knox last summer league shot 30 percent, shot much better this year
That's fine, but percentages / stats are less an issue
ChaChing : 7/13/2019 8:10 pm : link
than how he played in SL. He played much this way last year to my eye, then struggled during the season playing much less confident

Here he jumped right in to being aggressive, playing with some motor, and defending a bit. IMO that disappeared overall during the season save a few stretches. That's what I'm waiting to see
RJ
Phil in LA : 7/13/2019 8:13 pm : link

Iggy 17 pts

7-11, 3-5 & 8 boards. Some decent D & good motor in general

Yeah, Iggy looks much better than anticipated.
bceagle05 : 7/13/2019 9:59 pm : link
When he gets an open look I expect it to go in. Can’t say that about too many Knicks players in recent years. He has a high b-ball IQ as well - also not common among Knicks players.

I think in a year or two and with a system and decent players around him, RJ is going to have quite a few triple-doubles.

My lone beef with Beilen last year was he ran the offense through Simpson and Teske. When Poole and Iggy were by far their best offensive players. Poole actually despises Beilen and left because of Him.
Knox didn't play this way last SL.
manh george : 7/14/2019 2:30 am : link
He's 10 pounds of muscle stronger and still lifting for the rest of the summer. His 3 point shot didn't look close to this. His drives to the basket, using either hand this year, are stronger. His d is better. His rebounding is better. His vision is better.

Other than that, identical.
I dunno...I remember him showing on D
ChaChing : 7/14/2019 2:57 am : link
obviously scoring in SL 2018, while showing some versatility. Yeah maybe a few other things this time, he passed a little better? Was stronger? We can debate specifics and yet overall it was similar

He was also SL all 1st team last year. He won't be this time. So again I'm waiting for the season. I'm excited about Iggy & RJ, but same thing...we saw KK's first season, and regardless there's a lot of development to go for all of these guys
In as much as I've heard James Harden comps
Ten Ton Hammer : 7/14/2019 11:22 am : link
With Barrett, I think the closer comparison in play style is Wade.

Obviously wade was a special athlete, but his game and Barrett are similar. They're better attacking the basket and midrange and arent perimeter shooters. They're willing passers who can make players around them better.

RJ has a long way to go with efficiency and defense, but I see more wade than Harden.
The game is replaying on NBA network right now
