Im very curious to see how this team plays over the second half. Obviously, pen did us in.. Didn't help being without Nimmo, Lowrie, and even a second half Cespedes all year. Players have underperformed as well. But I dont see it continuing all season. Players generally even out and there is talent on this team. Will be curious to see who we sell off over the next week or two. Frazier and Wheeler seem likely. Is Vargas worth anything? His option is actually pretty cheap for next year and we need to fill spots. Could see him kept.
Ill always hate the Marlins so lets bounce back and take this series. LGM!
hope you don't mind me cluttering up the game thread with this (Mets future pudge):

Mets catcher prospect Francisco Alvarez has been an offensive beast to begin in pro career.
17-year-old is hitting .388/.509/.673 with 5 doubles, 3 homers, and 14 RBI in 14 games between GCL and Kingsport

Reports when the Mets signed Alvarez questioned whether he would stay behind the plate. Talked to multiple people recently that raves about his D behind the plate. I saw a strong arm this spring.
In the trade deadline thread I posted a tweet about the Mets asking price and it seems like BVW has received calls already.
A lot of what BVW said yesterday was disappointing but he pegged the correct problems on the field. Lack of fundamentals, never doing the little things right, poor defense up the middle, and bullpen. Same as they have been for a long time.
The biggest thing he didn't mention is organizational leadership, which is the #1 problem, but at least he's not blind to the other stuff. It is on him to be a leader going forward and to make moves that fix those problems instead of making them worse. After 20 years I'm not sure it's possible under the wilpons.
As Brodie was describing how the team is so bad at all the little things + fundamentals that lose games yesterday Francesa had a great response pointing out "wouldn't that indicate you're not happy with the way the team is being coached/managed?" - which is exactly why it was so cowardly to not fire the guy when he so clearly blew a gasket last month. He's been an embarrassment in every way. But that's cool - we're the Mets and embarrassments are welcomed from the owner's box down.

The guy has as much ability as anyone in baseball. Would be nuts to trade him unless someone offers something insane. Maybe, just maybe, we should see what happens with better D, a real manager, and a non-awful BP before casting him off.
He's playing 1B tonight (for some reason), I liked him when they acquired him the first time, he had a debilitating shoulder (?) injury and he's coming back, could be a decent utility guy at some point. He's still only 25. 17 HR's in Syracuse.
21 year old son of Travis Fryman. Mets drafted him twice. Both late, and he's not considered a prospect as far as I know, just not sure why.
He's 21 in BK, but it's his first pro season.
The only players they should trade are veterans if they can get anything for them at all. Frazier, Vargas, Lagares, Ramos.
I'd consider dealing Wheeler but only if he's bringing back a prospect on the level of Vientos/Kay/SWR. Otherwise may as well try to resign him with the QO.
The only other guy I'd consider dealing is Lugo if he can bring back a really good return like Brad hand last year or Sean Doolittle a few years back. Lugo has a bunch of years of team control, if he could bring back 1 or 2 top 100 prospects I think you'd have to do it. I like Lugo a lot but he's a solid near 30 year old middle reliever. You can spend money for guys like that in FA.
If the Mets trade Wheeler it puts the return for him in BVW's hands. If they hold onto him and offer the QO and he obviously declines and signs LT somewhere, the compensation for him is determined by amateur scouting.
The people I read that from greatly prefer the latter.
General take-away was that Brodie is the goods, at least behind the scenes, and he is in complete command of the room, and wont let Jeff meddle.
He is this year (his career numbers are clearly better than average), but his he has plus stuff. Which is what makes him frustrating.

Tony Dibrells line for St. Lucie today:
6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 SO
90 pitches (55 for strikes)
Hes gone at least six innings without allowing more than two ER in four of his last five starts. #Mets #LGM
but...there's the bullpen....coming up.
7 IP, 2 ER, 0 BB, 9 K's

He was actually throwing his slider tonight which is encouraging.
Obviously there's more to it in terms of the season, resting guys, making sure they get enough work...but after Diaz' first half IMO why risk it here? Not sure if pitcher was hitting this inning, but I might let Lugo hit just to give him a shot at the 9th after a strong 8th

Yeah especially since they tend to stay away from Lugo two nights in a row. So if you know he's unavailable tomorrow, I would be tempted to let him go another. Of course, Diaz will come in however.
Cant wait to follow this kid. Really this entire draft is very exciting..

Too bad they will trade him for crap so Wilpon can claim that they are trying to be competitive.

One of the craziest positive developments from the 2019 season has been Smith at a 1 DRS in LF.
Yes, its a very SSS, but seeing him play LF last year, no one could have foreseen that happening.

He needs to play every day (sans rest) the rest of the year. Even when Nimmo is back. None of Conforto, Nimmo, McNeil or Alonso should ever sit (other than for rest)
Didn't realize that.
Puello had 5 tools as a prospect IFA.
He's 28 now and seems like a mostly career minor leaguer - until now. He has a really good 22 year old season with the Mets in BING and then I think he was suspended for PED's in the biogenesis scandal.

" The other thing to remember is that DRS isnt going to work well in small sample sizes, especially a couple of months or less. Once you get to one and three-year samples, its a relatively solid metric but defensive itself is quite variable so you need a good amount of data for the metrics to become particularly useful. Theres plenty more to say about this issue, but thats for another entry. In general, DRS isnt perfect because it doesnt factor in shifts, positioning, and cant perfectly measure everything it needs to, but its still among the best options out there.

Has got to drive a manage crazy to see that.
And people got mad when he was compared to Armando Benitez.
so similar. Great stuff, stretches of brilliance, and some awful, inconsistent, long stretches.

Mets asked for Gore from San Diego. So I dont think BVW is going to trade him for lesser prospects. If I had to bet, I would say he stays a Met
