Hard to see why he will be used as an end rather than as a more in shape refrigerator clogging the middle.I would see him in the middle with McIntosh,Tomlinson, Pierre or Golden as the end.
And where these guys wind up playing is a long way from being decided anyway. What happens before the season starts almost always gets changed anyway.
I also have the suspicion that they may feel Lawrence can be more effective as 3-4 DE than Tomlinson. Tomlinson was billed as a run plugger coming out of school, and they may believe that's where he can be his best, whereas Dexter may have more range and versatility despite his build. But that's pure conjecture.
I am really curious to see if Macintosh is a key contributor this year. Given his circumstances last year, it was a surprise he even played at all, and he wasn't awful when he played.
Would be great if he really was a solid contributor this year.
...if he fails as a pass rusher. The middle is his floor and something he will see snaps at on passing downs but they absolutely should explore his potential as an interior rusher given his athletic profile and where he was drafted.
Made this thread of Lawrence right after he was drafted, it may help those see him a little differently than just a traditional "NT". Right off the bat he will help them in stunts, and will absolutely play as part of their 3rd down rotation. Link - ( New Window )
But he moves and is shaped like an oversized 5 tech.
Plus he should give Betch flexibilty. For example a team goes 11 personnel on 1st and 10, Betch could counter with a 2-4 nickel and not invite a running play with DLaw and another 300 lber clogging the middle.
He will be playing all three spots in the 3-4 scheme. The edge rushers are the OLB’s Golden, Carter, Martin, and Ximines.
Martin is far from an edge rusher, he is awful
I never said he was good. My point is that he is playing the position but probably on 1st and 2nd down. Saying Lawrence is an edge rusher proves the OP doesn’t understand the Giants scheme.
And absolutely- you try Dexter at end in 4 DL look. We have seen even Hill out there on rare occasion, Dexter may have an even higher ceiling outside shoulder on an OT.
Not bullshitting about a 4-0-7 with 4 very varied DTs and 7 very varied DBs.
It's a numbers game - with 4 - that any of whom - might on his own demand the attention of two OLs.. you do the math.
Moreover, we're not a 4-3 anymore.
