McBride Boston Globe: Sunday Football Notes:
Isaiah Wynn a study in the power of positive thinking

“As they have so often in recent years, the Patriots will hold joint practices this summer. Bill Belichick will take his campers on the road for a sort of Friends and Family tour in Detroit (hello, Matt Patricia) and Nashville (hey there, Mike Vrabel).
Besides giving players the opportunity to literally butt heads with new faces — guys often talk about how tiresome it becomes hitting the same guys day after day — the sessions are extremely valuable for building roster depth.
Not only do coaches get a chance to evaluate their own guys, it gives them the chance to investigate opposing players who could possibly fit into their plans down the line.
The Patriots have a long history of acquiring former foes via trade or free agency after being impressed with their performances during the game-like situations that often occur during joint practices...”

Detillier Houma Today: Buddy D’s interview with Coach Lombardi

“I ran across an interview Diliberto transcribed from film to paper when he went to Washington to interview legendary head coach Vince Lombardi in the summer of 1969 after Lombardi accepted the head coaching job with the Washington Redskins.
Lombardi won six NFL championships for the Green Bay Packers from 1959-1967, posted a 89-29-4 mark in Green Bay and coached the Packers to wins in Super Bowls I and II, but in early 1968 Lombardi retired from coaching to be just the general manager of the Packers.
However Lombardi grew restless in the front office and wanted to return to coaching in 1969.
With termites already eating away at the fragile football foundation of then New Orleans Saints head coach Tom Fears, Saints owner John Mecom met with Lombardi about taking over the young franchise.
Diliberto told me he had first been tipped off to the meeting by former Packers great running back Jimmy Taylor, who the Saints traded for in their inaugural 1967 season and helped set up the meeting between his former coach and Mecom.
Diliberto told me that ABC Network was really pushing the coverage of pro football knowing they would have Monday Night Football in the fall of 1970 and would try and accommodate people for interviews and the former sports anchor knew Lombardi from when the city of New Orleans was trying to get a franchise.
Lombardi agreed to do the interview before training camp started for the Redskins in 1969, but he told Diliberto that he wanted him to bring him some Barq's Root Beer from New Orleans.
"Lombardi told me right off the bat he would not comment on being pursued by John Mecom because of respect for Tom Fears, but he confirmed they had spoken and that John Mecom offered him some equity of the team in a deal, but that it was never serious talks," Diliberto said.
Diliberto asked Coach Vince Lombardi what he had learned in the one year away from coaching football.
"What I learned was that the National Football League and I include myself in that league was way too arrogant and we were full of ourselves thinking we had a monopoly on professional football," Lombardi said. “Anyone who thinks Joe Namath and the New York Jets defeating the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III was a fluke doesn't know anything about football. The AFL has gotten to be a much more physical league over the past few years. The passing game schemes and the attack on opposing secondaries are right now better than what I see in the NFL overall. They run a lot of (3-4) defensive schemes which is interesting and more zone coverage sets than the National Football League does and it works."

"I'm going to tell you how they got real good so fast," Lombardi said. "This is fact that the American Football League scouted and selected players from the predominately black schools, especially in the South, far better than what as a league we have done. I give the Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Rams a lot of credit for doing such a good job spotting the talent at those schools, but as a whole we did not do a good job getting those top players. If we don't improve finding players from those schools, listening to those coaches and finding out about them the American Football League will overtake the National Football League and fast. When I took over the job here with the Redskins I told our scouts and coaching staff I want the best players for the Redskins that fit what we do. This talk of picking the best man on the board is ridiculous. Front-office folks that say they are protecting their jobs and repeating what others tell them. I want the best player for what we do here in Washington, just like what we had in Green Bay. I want the player that will work hard, work as a team, excel in our system and be good people on and off the field."
"If someone doesn't like me selecting or trading for players that don't look like them, tough, go cheer for someone else," Lombardi said. "I will do this my way. And if you don't agree with that I can't help you. It won't be the players or coaches fault or the fault of the owner if we don't succeed, but Vince Lombardi's fault. I run this team with help from some excellent people around me. I am not afraid to lose. People tell me I have my reputation on the line taking this job. I don't care about reputation. I care about piecing together a group of men who from different backgrounds, different schools, different thoughts about politics and life and having them work for one goal. We have too many people who breed hate, prejudice and some that want something without really working for it. That won't be tolerated here. It will be done one way, my way."

"I still think I have a lot more to give to the game and coaching is like teaching and I love to teach, and I also like to see the benefits of those teachings," Lombardi said. "I learned about things in my year away from coaching, but what I learned the most about was the special relationship I had with my players and coaches. As a coach/general manager you have to deal with family issues, pressures in being a professional athlete and also learning life issues from them. I am not too old to not learn from young people in life. There is nothing in life that can fill that gap in forming that relationship with them as a person individually and as a team. It's gratifying to be part of something special and having success in that venture."

Rosey Grier RDT/RDE D3-Penn State 1955 NYG 1955-1962 7-14-1932

Robustelli on Grier:

“Roosevelt Grier: “Rosey had a great amount of ability but weight always was a problem for him,” says Robustelli. “Sometimes it ballooned over 300 pounds. He spent every summer in training camp at the ‘fat man’s table,’ where overweight players were rationed with salads and gelatin. Rosie went through all of that without saying a word, but we knew he went out at night after our meetings and loaded up with a plateful of goodies that undid all that he had achieved from two-a-days and three sparse meals. During the season his stamina suffered when his weight went above 300 pounds and he couldn’t get into a play quick enough. He was always looking for timeouts on the field. ‘We can’t, Ro, we can’t,’ I’d tell him. ‘We have to save them for the offense.’ One time we got one, and when it ended, he wanted another. We almost strangled him.

“If Grier, who was a big loveable guy, had kept himself in some semblance of shape, he would be in the Hall of Fame,” Robustelli went on. “In those times when he was around 280 pounds, no offensive lineman in the league could handle him one-on-one. There never has been a quicker inside lineman. He had great agility and an amazing ability to spin off a block and catch a running back before he barely reached the hole. When he spent the 1957 season in the military, his absence was part of the reason why we didn’t repeat as champions.”

From Cuthbert, Georgia to Roselle, New Jersey to Penn State

“Certainly enough, shaking peanuts and cutting sugar cane on his daddy's farm instilled a work ethic and helped him mature quickly. He was getting paid a dollar a day, just like the men, when he was 6 years old.
But Grier only had time for school three days a week. The cotton and the cane came first. What seemingly saved him was a family move to New Jersey a few years later.
He says he knew then that he would spend his life serving others.
He chose Penn State because it offered a track and field scholarship and wasn't too far from his new home. He tried to study music but became frustrated and dropped it. Instead, he simply sang his way into people's good graces. Even more, he showed a stunning potential in football where, at 240 pounds, he actually was larger than most everyone, which combined exquisitely with his quickness and agility.
Being forced to prove himself only fueled him more.
"They tried to test me. A young man, a center, hit me in the chin and I didn't like that very much," Grier said, remembering back to early Penn State practices. "So they couldn't run on my side no more because I wouldn't let them. Before the year was over, I was playing both ways."
Penn State is where he constructed that gentle giant aura with a dab of showbiz flair mixed with genuine country kindness. It made made him appeal to most everyone, to easily cut across racial, political and demographic lines.
"He was a big human being," teammate Lenny Moore said, "but just as nice and truthful as you could be."

Beat of NJ.com: Black History

“Grier was one of 12 children, and by his teenage years, had moved to Roselle to attend Abraham Clark High School. He spent his youth staying active, and it was at Abraham Clark that his athletic talents became apparent; he was a top player in several high school football championship games. After graduating from high school in 1951, his athletic abilities enabled him to play on the defensive line at Penn State University, where he quickly became captain of the football team.”

09-17-1955

Drafted in the third round by the Giants out of Penn State, Grier was moved to RDE in the Giants 5 man front.

1956

After the Giants failed experiment with MG Stan West acquired from the Rams at great cost, the Giants move to a 4-3 front with LDT Ray Krause being sent to Pittsburgh for Dick Modzelewski. Modzelewski at LDT and Grier at RDT would remain the Giants interior combo through the 1962 season.

Defensive coach Tom Landry had his 4-3, what he needed was a MLB to make his defense work. The move of rookie Sam Huff from offensive guard to MLB was the key, giving the Giants defensive coach an agile, tough, aggressive tackler who capitalize on a scheme were the DL would not fight through blocks but use angles to direct the blockers to one side, when the play went to the other, the ball carrier being left alone for the MLB.

Here what was once the MG would drop back, the DT’s would tighten with a inside rush to protect him. The ends would line up inside the other linebackers to protect them. What was once the MG became the MLB and his play would make the system work. In this system if a inside run was expected, Grier and Modzelewski would be the ones taking the inside routes. On a outside run was expected the two tackles went outside the OG’s and the MLB would follow the back outside.

The Giants won the championship and Grier became first team All-Pro.

1957

Grier enters the military and misses the 1957 season

Grier related easily with the troops. He’d been drafted into the Army in 1957 after one of his best seasons in the NFL. “The Giants had just won the NFL championship game, beating the Chicago Bears 47-7, and I’d been picked to play in the Pro Bowl in Los Angeles that year,” he said. “The day I left for that game I received that letter we all know.”

Grier would miss the 1957 NFL season while serving eighteen months at Ft. Dix. “I had no objections to our system, and I believed I had a duty to perform as a citizen of the country I love. But I couldn’t help but be a little disappointed. I’d just gotten to the level where I could renegotiate my salary with the Giants for a little bit more pay.”
All in all, Grier said, “the rigors of Army life suited me: getting up early, the exercise, learning to make my bed the way the Army told me. As near as I could tell, I was not given any special treatment—good or bad. And best of all, the food was plentiful.”

12-23-1958

With Grier back, the Giants make it to the championship game but Grier’s injury spells trouble.

Giants Start Practice Drills By JOE REICHLER Associated Press Sports Writer NEW YORK (AP)

“What new trick will the New York Giants come up with against the Baltimore Colts in the National Football League championship game next Sunday? Fans in this suddenly professional football crazy town still were buzzing about the razzle- dazzle double reverse lateral that produced the only touchdown in last Sunday’s spectacular 10-0 New York triumph over Cleveland for the Eastern division title. “That was the Brown special,“ Coach Jim Lor Howell confided today. “We called it 'the thing' all week but we finally decided on a better name.” If the Giants had a “Ewbank special” to throw at Coach Weeb Ewbank’s Colts next week, they weren’t saying. It’s a safe bet they'll practice any new play in private. Two Giant* Hurt Two Giants who undoubtedly will not participate in the work- j outs until late in the week are Rosey Grier and Sam Huff. Both suffered painful injuries last week but don’t bet against their appearing in the lineup against the Colts. Grier, the massive defensive tackle, is on crutches as a result of a leg injury sustained when he was blocked in a play. Huff, who did such a tremendous hawking job on Jimmy Brown (the Browns' fullback star was held to eight yards in seven rushes), may have a cracked rib...”

In the era of the 36 man roster an injury such as Grier’s would force a team to move a offensive guard to DT disrupting the OL as much as the DL. While Grier would start in spite of his injury by the time the game reached its now famous OT, he would be gone and the Colts offense took advantage of a tired defense.

Rosey Grier in Life Magazine (1960)

“Grier was 6' 5" and played at close to 300 pounds -- but moved like a smaller man. "When I played in high school," he told LIFE, "I patterned my movements on the little guys. They were so fast, and I learned to watch how they moved, how they worked their feet. So after a while, the instant the ball moved at the line of scrimmage, I would just explode off the line. My quickness came from watching little guys. I penetrated so quickly because I beat everyone off the line, always."
"It was an exciting time for me," Grier recalled of his early days with the Giants. "Here we were, out of college -- most of the guys, anyway, had all graduated from college -- and to be with these players from all over the country was fun, a thrill ... and, at first, a little nervous-making. I mean, when I first came to the Giants, a lot of the guys were from the South -- the head coach, Jim Lee Howell, was from Arkansas -- and I assumed that there was no way we'd get along. With me being black, and knowing that there were only going to be so many black ball players on a team -- well, long story short, I could not have been more wrong. The camaraderie I found there was unbelievable.
"It was an an incredible thing," Grier said, "coming from the South, playing college ball at Penn State, to end up in New York playing for a franchise with a history like the Giants. I enjoyed it so much, and became good friends with guys like Charlie Conerly, [halfback and receiver] Kyle Rote ... oh, so many of them. The team felt like a family then. It really did."

1962 Giants Profiles:

“ROSEY GRIER
Defensive Tackle
No. 76
Penn State
"The singing tackle of the defense is Rosey Grier, who cuts records in the off-season and cuts down blockers, runners and passers as a defensive bulwark during the fall. He's potentially one of the greats of the game but is handicapped by the club's defensive setup which limits his tremendous pursuit.
Rosey has maintained his speed and agility since his rookie campaign of  1955."

-Don Schiffer, 1962 Pro Football Handbook

7-08-1963

On July 8, 1963 the New York Giants traded away one of the stalwart members of their defensive line by dealing DT Roosevelt “Rosey” Grier to the Los Angeles Rams for DT John LoVetere and a future draft pick.

“At 31, Grier is about four years older than LoVetere,” explained New York’s Head Coach Allie Sherman. Sherman also expressed the desire to use the draft choice obtained from the Rams in dealing for a veteran running back, which failed to materialize (it ended up being a fourth-round choice in 1964 that was used to take Ohio State FB Matt Snell, who chose to sign with New York’s AFL club, the Jets)

Then it was on to the fearsome foursome:

And of talents beyond the playing field:

Patrin Vice Magazine: The Seriously Awesome Soul Music of NFL Legend Rosey Grier
Rosey Grier was an integral part of one of the greatest defensive lines in NFL history. He is also, as far as we can tell, the best sports star turned musician ever, by a mile

“But Grier was cutting records on a regular basis throughout his playing career, with a string of singles that starting in the 1960s. The music biz, like American pop culture more generally, was reorienting itself from New York to Los Angeles, and that fortuitous move is reflected in Grier's songs. As a New York Giant, he cut doo-wop-ified versions of standards like "Moonlight in Vermont."

Brandt NFL.com: Best team fits for top remaining free agents

“Kelvin Benjamin, WR, to the New York Giants. The Giants need to improve on their 28th-ranked red-zone offense from 2018, and the big-bodied Benjamin (6-foot-5, 245 pounds) could potentially help them do so. Giants general manager Dave Gettleman and offensive coordinator Mike Shula know Benjamin well, as they were with the Panthers when that team selected Benjamin 28th overall. They should also have a strong handle on the weaknesses of a player whose production has plummeted steadily since then. Benjamin topped 1,000 receiving yards as a rookie, but more or less disappeared over the past two seasons, scraping together just over 1,000 combined yards while changing teams twice (he was traded to Buffalo in '17, waived by the Bills last year and spent three games in Kansas City). With Odell Beckham Jr. gone, New York needs receiver depth. Might Gettleman and Shula's familiarity with Benjamin help him get his career back on track?”

Perhaps it's their familiarity with Benjamin that prevents Gattleman and Shula from reaching out to him.

involvement in two big moments, one huge, the other with a double murderer. The first was being at RFK’s side during his assassination and the other as a reverend visiting O.J. in jail and purportedly hearing his murder confession..

Oh and he also would knit as a hobby while with the Giants..😎

this a day or two ago, but there have been fewer articles on the Giants this offseason than I can ever remember. ESPN rarely puts a new article out anymore. NJ.com does more "top 5 so-and-so stuff", which is fluff. Newsday and Bergen Record haven't done much at all (and there are only a limited number of free views per month for those sites). Daily News has their own problems. Paul Schwartz is still plugging along, but even he seems to have slacked off a bit.

It’s even worse when you factor in that some days Pat Traina makes up for 2 or 3 of the articles posted on her own.
