NFT: Movies that critics and fans liked but you don't

montanagiant : 7/14/2019 1:03 pm
I have two of them:

Natural Born Killers - The only movie I ever walked out on halfway over. The whole scene in the teepee was the final straw.

Repoman - I mean WTF? It 98% from Rotten Tomatoes and 79% from fans. It's the dumbest hodgepodge of a movie mess I have ever seen

Cant remember a movie I was looking forward to seeing more.....and being so disappointed by. I had a book when I was a kid called "bloodletters and Badmen", kind of an encyclopedia of crime throughout history. My favorite section was on the Five Points gangs of the late 1800's/early 1900's. Wyhos, Dead Rabbits, Plug Uglies, etc....and that movie just didnt give me what I was looking for. Cameron Diaz was NOT mentioned anywhere:) But most people I know liked it, so I guess they reached the audience they were looking for. Just not me.

Agree on Natural Born Killers and 2001. Didn’t really enjoy them.

I’ll add:

Annie Hall
The Departed: Thought it was incredible until the last half hour. That ruined it for me.

I'd also go with Sin City.

Into the Spiderverse. I hated the animation in the trailer and people kept saying it's better if you see the movie. It's like a living comic book. It wasn't and as a reader of many comic books, no, it didn't feel any more like a comic had the animation not been a weird marriage of stop motion and CGI.

Or really any Tarantino movies.

Everyone raves about the dialogue and the homages to the 1962 movie that was viewed by 14 people that inspired this film or that, but all of his work feels so strained and forced that it seems like it needs Preparation H at this stage of the game.

Maybe my friend's mindless adoration of everything he did grated me and I have extra disdain for the films, but the only redeeming quality I find is usually the soundtrack/music.

When did you see 2001 ? I can see how it would be boring to today's audiences or even audiences in the last few decades. When it came out though times were different. Yeah I still remember how I felt while watching that in the theater. There had been nothing like it to that point, ever.

And while yes it is slow paced many great movies of that time were slower paced compared with today's movies. In order for him to get the desired effect it had to be deliberately slow in comparison to what people were used to. I can see why a younger audience of today would find it too slow to enjoy but it was a great movie.

Sort of just using 1980 as an arbitrary year. He had a few good ones after that, but it's mostly the Woodman getting accolades solely from his rep.

Not bad, some good acting, but really unremarkable. Ridiculous saccharine ending. Way overrated.

Leaving Las Vegas. Total piece of shit. I mean total. How did so many people get fooled?

Any movie by Tarantino not named Pulp Fiction. Most people love Inglorious Basterds - totally lost on me.

Big Lebowski and many other Coen Brothers’.

Scarface - just brutal. A lot of it comically bad, including Pacino.

Midsommar too soon?

Care to explain??

I mean the point is to think of critically acclaimed and objectively popular, loved movies that you personally didn't like...

So for me I thought about highly rated Rotten Tomato movies that I didn't like and Sideways and No Country for Old Men came to mind... Tons of movies I liked less but few that are objectively as "good" as those two.

If everyone posted about how they liked other movies people didn't (eg. I loved Black Panther and Get Out and will always love Gump) then this thread would be as tedious and anticlimactic as I felt No Country was... Lol

Blair Witch Project. Interesting concept, terrible execution.

Little Miss Sunshine - I loathed every single character in this movie, including the little girl.

Birdman - it wasn't bad, but it got Citizen Kane level praise and I didn't see what all the hoopla was about. Kind of dull and depressing.

I enjoyed Rushmore, kind of enjoyed The Royal Tannenbaums, and then was unable to be moved by any other film of his. Reducing characterization to "the guy who always wears the chef's hat" or "the girl who never smiles" just doesn't do it for me.

Monsters Ball … it just seemed to wander, going no where in particular and the most incomplete, unsatisfying ending I've seen.

The English patient was excruciating to sit through and try to figure out what the hell you were watching … but in the end it answered all the questions and a second watching was more satisfying.

On another note, a movie that committed suicide was Inglorious Basterds. I thought it was very good … until the last 20 minutes when it turned into a cartoon.

I’m not sure if any of the recent Star Wars movies would count as movie critics and fans liked, would they? Except for Rogue One, which was quality IMO.

I actually liked Solo better that the critics and most fans did.

the critics went nuts for TLJ. IMO that movie was horrible...I will never watch it again.

Rogue One is the best of the new ones and yes I even enjoyed Solo.

Yes. After the breathtaking invasion scenes, the rest of the movie is a by-the-numbers WWII movie. The invasion is still amazing though.

Three hours of hell. Only thing good was DeCaprio dying. Ship sank in like 10 minutes real time yet 90 minutes later still sinking. I guess I have to give Cameron credit. He made me feel what it was like to suffer a slow death

And for me Avatar was Dances w Wolves in space. And even Dances was a bit of a plot rip-off of A Man Called Horse. Soldier goes native Got it.

Actually, Titanic took @ 2 1/2 hours to sink.
