that critics and/or people loved but you hated. The other night I saw the Broadway play "Come From Away" which received almost universal praise but I literally almost fell asleep during it, I was bored to tears and I there were a slew of things that I could point to that made it pedestrian. If there had been an intermission, I wouldn't have returned for the second act. Have there been any plays that you've seen that were praised but you disliked and then questioned yourself as to what you missed or whether they truly were garbage.
only two I've seen. Went because my wife wanted to and that's what husbands do but I would rather shoot myself in the nuts with a taser than have to sit through either again.
In contrast, Rent went overboard with the social justice messages from La Boheme. (And the music wasn't nearly as good.)

I sat through Wicked as a birthday gift for my wife. Absolutely brutal.
I didn’t think Rent was bad, but I didn’t find it as WOW as the popular opinion did.
I haven’t been willing to drop the big time $$$ to see Hamilton, as I’m near certain it won’t live up to its billing. And even if it’s good, it’ll have to be the best thing ever or the cost will leave a bitter taste.
I saw the film and was like "wait, Roxy Hart was supposed to be sexy? And not a vaudville goofball?"
Never seen an opera either.
I mean, I've seen snippets of what I assume were the "highlights" of several of these and thought... I'd rather go to the zoo. Or do the dishes. Or my taxes. Or your taxes. Hell, anyone's taxes.
Jersey Boys, the Carole King one-they make sense because they are telling the story of musicians. I refuse to see a regular musical, they are awful.
There are several other people in our neighborhood who go to the theater frequently and we had an interesting conversation a couple of weeks ago about Phantom. I thought we'd be the only ones who thought it sucked, but it was pretty divided down the middle, and it was either high praise for it or that it sucked.
I guess it is the cilantro of theater....
The only play I believe I have seen and that I felt stunk was one I had high expectations for; "The Roast". I was thinking it's written by Gary Marshall, directed by Carl Reiner, and cast had a lot of big named actors, like Peter Boyle, Rob Reiner among others so surely it had to be good. It sucked and I think closed within the first week.
