that critics and/or people loved but you hated. The other night I saw the Broadway play "Come From Away" which received almost universal praise but I literally almost fell asleep during it, I was bored to tears and I there were a slew of things that I could point to that made it pedestrian. If there had been an intermission, I wouldn't have returned for the second act. Have there been any plays that you've seen that were praised but you disliked and then questioned yourself as to what you missed or whether they truly were garbage.
The musical "Once"

It won a Tony for best musical. I liked the movie, didn't like the stage production

and Wicked

only two I've seen. Went because my wife wanted to and that's what husbands do but I would rather shoot myself in the nuts with a taser than have to sit through either again.
West Side Story was a great rewrite of a classic

modernizing the story as well as updating the social problems.

In contrast, Rent went overboard with the social justice messages from La Boheme. (And the music wasn't nearly as good.)

I sat through Wicked as a birthday gift for my wife. Absolutely brutal.
Definitely agree on Wicked

I mean it wasn’t horrible and the musical numbers were good, but I found it contrived. My wife and daughter were of course bonkers for it. I felt similarly about “Into The Woods” (though I only saw the film version of that).

I didn’t think Rent was bad, but I didn’t find it as WOW as the popular opinion did.

I haven’t been willing to drop the big time $$$ to see Hamilton, as I’m near certain it won’t live up to its billing. And even if it’s good, it’ll have to be the best thing ever or the cost will leave a bitter taste.
Kind of obvious, but it all depends on the actors...
sb from NYT Forum : 7/14/2019 11:30 pm : link
...and how long the show has been running. I saw Chicago after it was running for several years and it was terrible. The actor playing Roxie Hart played it like Lucile Ball. Fucking unwatchable.

I saw the film and was like "wait, Roxy Hart was supposed to be sexy? And not a vaudville goofball?"
Haven't seen a play since I was in 3rd grade.

No offense intended to anyone, but I dont feel like I've missed out on a lot.

Never seen an opera either.

I mean, I've seen snippets of what I assume were the "highlights" of several of these and thought... I'd rather go to the zoo. Or do the dishes. Or my taxes. Or your taxes. Hell, anyone's taxes.
Jersey Boys

Is the only play I’ve ever been to and it works because they were actual musicians who played music. Musical plays are the absolute worst-I can’t stand how they just burst into song in the middle of whatever they are doing.

Jersey Boys, the Carole King one-they make sense because they are telling the story of musicians. I refuse to see a regular musical, they are awful.

Saw it in NY. People were crying in the audience. My ex could not pull her eyes away. I am looking around like "WTF". I didn't get it and I didn't feel anything for any of the characters.
My wife and I..

hated "Phantom of the Opera". I don't know if it was the extreme buildup, but I came away wondering why people thought it was great. My wife fell asleep!!

There are several other people in our neighborhood who go to the theater frequently and we had an interesting conversation a couple of weeks ago about Phantom. I thought we'd be the only ones who thought it sucked, but it was pretty divided down the middle, and it was either high praise for it or that it sucked.

I guess it is the cilantro of theater....
Did you notice a sub text in Wicked, Jersey Boys?

I hated Les Miserables.

Operatic, no spoken dialogue for nearly 4 hours. Everything is sung. I put my coat on to leave and then learned it was only intermission 2/12 hours in. And a depressing story, as the title would indicate.
Pulp Fiction. Absolutely hated it. Wife and I walked out of the

Obviously Pulp Fiction wasn't a play but I had to include it.

I loved Les Miserables, and also enjoyed Phantom.

The only play I believe I have seen and that I felt stunk was one I had high expectations for; "The Roast". I was thinking it's written by Gary Marshall, directed by Carl Reiner, and cast had a lot of big named actors, like Peter Boyle, Rob Reiner among others so surely it had to be good. It sucked and I think closed within the first week.
