Jints in Carolina : 7/15/2019 9:53 am
Boxing legend and Olympic gold medalist Pernell Whitaker was killed Sunday night after he was hit by a car in Virginia Beach, Va., according to TMZ Sports.

The four-time boxing champion in four different weight classes retired in 2001 before returning to the ring as a full-time trainer. Whitaker won titles in the lightweight, light welterweight, welterweight, and light middleweight divisions and was the the undisputed lightweight champion during the most successful portion of his career.

Whitaker won 40 of 46 total bouts during his career and was widely-regarded as one of the best defensive boxers of all-time, ala Floyd Mayweather.

He was such a technician in the ring

Didn't have big power but few could move like Sweet Pea.
He was such a great fighter

got robbed twice. The draw against Chavez was up there with the Roy Jones Olympic decision as one of the worst decisions in boxing history. I also thought he beat De La Hoya. Great fighter. Sorry to see him die at such a young age and under such tragic circumstances.
yeah this is really sad

I suspect someone texting while driving.

that he might have been wearing dark clothing and possibly the driver simply did not see him in the morning
Watched most of his fights

Never a fan but he was a great fighter. Just touch to look good against
Yeah he did beat Chavez no doubt
Was exciting to watch because he would put on a defensive clinic like Floyd
But can’t take away that he is an all timer
Real sad , way too early. Tragic circumstances
Spell check

Or texting while walking. Go drive around Manhattan and watch as thousands of people walk into the street without having the right of way, all while staring at their phones.
Sad news. My favorite boxer of all-time.

He was like the Matrix in the ring with his ability to avoid punches. Great defensive boxer. Could've been better if not for substance abuse issues and he was already an all-time great.

RIP Sweet Pea. He'll be missed.
Very sad news to wake up to this morning

He was a tremendous boxer and one of my favorites but also a pretty cool guy. I met him a few times as my parents lived a couple houses away from him. He wasalways cool to myself and my kids and my dad talked with him often and said what a nice guy he was, and completely different than the guy in the ring.

RIP Sweat Pea.
Sweet Pea was a craftsman

he couldn't win with one punch but he could with 100. He was fun to watch and cheer for. Sad day. RIP.

alcohol, drugs, fatigue, confusion or distraction by either the driver or pedestrian or both. Sometimes older drivers or pedestrians with slow reflexes/reaction time also are factors. Sad but common.
Fighters would swing on him and he just
