how long is their layover? So the person is going to exit the terminal, meet for lunch and then go back through security? Depending on time you might be able to head to the Ironbound section of Newark
the Ironbound section of Newark offers great Portuguese restaurants. A short Uber to Ferry Street and you will have a selection of great places to eat.
I highly recommend Krugs Tavern in Ironbound section ( or as we Jersey people call it Down Neck). Old dive bar. Fantastic burgers and good Italian food. Every year it is rated as one of best burgers in the state. I go there often before Seton Hall games at the Pru.
Killed some time @ Bello's, some soccer themed bar right outside Newark Penn Station. Good spot. I had a burger & it was damn good. Good beer on tap too, especially my favorite NJ beer, Kane Head High.
Portuguese and Brazillian steak houses off ferry. Iron bound is not as sketchy as rest of Newark too so safety isn’t as big of an issue. Honestly there isn’t a ton more in that area. Hillside and Irvington are both shot, and I can’t think of any great places in Linden. Rahway as a couple of good spots but that is getting into the 25 min mark and def not really worth it. Going the other way there are some nice spots in Harrison I guess but not much in Kearny that I love or north Arlington for that matter. Rutherford has good restaurants but same deal you are going almost 25 min.
3.5 isn’t a really long layover if that’s from inbound arrival Â
To outbound departure. Depending on time of day there can be traffic getting to/from EWR from downtown Newark.
Ironbound lunch is probably doable if everything is on time, but I’d plan for a contingency of meeting at the restaurant in the airport Marriott in case of delays, traffic, etc. Best move is just to walk from the terminal to the hotel (be careful crossing the inner roadway) and it’s a decent pick. Standard hotel fare.
just wound up eating fast food outside the secure area at terminal B but accompliced the main goal of visiting with some relatives passing through.
Just a comment about Siri. About a month back it gave me an easy path to the cell phone lot st JFk. Not so for Newark. It just took me to the front of a terminal. Had to get directions at the terminal and still took a while to find the cell phone lot through a maze of roads. After a while on the lot, decided to just use airport short term ripoff parking lot and meet in terminal.
two ways I'm aware of
you are picking up someone who cant manage on their own (minor/ elderly etc)
You are an airline gold status member and you tell them you have a meeting in the lounge.
No where near the airport. Just go to Dickey Dees and get an Italian hot dog

It really is excellent.
