Harrison NFL.com: 2019 NFL head coach power rankings

26 Pat Shurmur, Giants

Shurmur led the Giants to a 5-11 record and last-place finish in the NFC East in his first year on the job, and the Giants' offense faltered more often than not. That was an area Shurmur was supposed to shore up. Even the ridiculous all-purpose production of first-year phenom Saquon Barkley couldn't solve Big Blue's woes, so much so that the rush offense finished 24th in the league. This, with a running back who racked up over 2,000 yards from scrimmage. Were the Giants awful on offense? No. They were inconsistent, couldn't survive health woes at receiver, and were far from strong enough to make up for a bottom-10 defensive unit. Shurmur has much work to do in 2019, from replacing Odell Beckham Jr., to successfully managing the Eli Manning/ Daniel Jones situation, to trying to stay feisty in the NFC East. The reason he's behind Gase on this list? Gase has led a team to the playoffs, and Shurmur has yet to have success as a head coach.

Giants Birthdays 7-16

Anthony Howard NT UDFA-Tennessee 1987 NYG 1987 7-16-1960

Casey Merrill DE W-GB 1983 NYG 1983-1985 7-16-1957

10-03-1985 NYT: MERRILL JOINS GIANTS AFTER LONG HOLDOUT

Casey Merrill was sitting at his ranch last Thursday in Borrego Springs, Calif. At a time when he normally would be playing football, he had just planted a few hundred citrus trees oranges, tangerines, tangelos, red grapefruit and Mexican limes.
The telephone rang, and his lawyer-agent, Howard Slusher, told him to take the next flight to New York. Merrill closed down the ranch and arrived here at 2 A.M. Friday in time for Hurricane Gloria. On Tuesday night, he signed with the Giants for two years with a one-year option, and today he returned to the team he joined in 1983 as a pass-rushing defensive end.
Merrill had been one of the Giants' three unsigned veterans. He had been asking for $1.2 million over three years, and the Giants were reported to have been offering $800,000 over three years. However, a source familiar with the contract indicated Merrill would receive no more than $500,000 for two years...

With Merrill's return, the Giants' only remaining unsigned free agents are Mark Haynes, the All-Pro cornerback, and Earnest Gray, a seventh-year wide receiver. Neither appears close to signing.
Last season, Merrill played on 23 percent of the Giants' defensive plays as a substitute in passing situations. When three linebackers were injured, Merrill was used in passing situations as a linebacker in what the Giants called the Casey defense.

Better Pass Rush This Year
That defense will probably not be used now because it is not needed. Besides, Leonard Marshall's development has given the Giants a better pass rush.
''About 15 or 16 times,'' said Merrill, ''I thought I would sit out the year. But the team is doing well, and I want to be part of it. You watch on TV and you see your friends out there and you wish you were there.
''I'm glad to be back in New York. I didn't want to go anywhere else. Where else can you have bagels for breakfast, soul food for lunch and tacos for dinner?
''And I didn't want to miss Halloween here. Last year in Manhattan, we saw the Village People on Halloween. They don't have anything like that in the Midwest.'' Merrill's readiness is unresolved. ''I think I'm in good shape,'' he said. ''I've been digging ditches and doing running and a little weight work. I think I'll be ready tomorrow, but I haven't had too many collisions since the playoffs. I have to get my head popped a few times.''
''I assume he's pretty much ready to go,'' said Parcells, ''but we have to be careful. He's missed a lot of time. When that happens, you can get a lot of soreness and pull a muscle, like Eric Dickerson of the Rams did last week.''
Parcells was asked if he had ill feelings toward Merrill because of the prolonged absence.
''No,'' said the coach. ''That's business. I coach the guys that are here, and he's here now.''

Don Boll OL TR-WAS 1960 NYG 1960 Born 7-16-1927 Died 12-29-2001

Nebraska HS HOF

Don Boll was to the All Big Seven Conference football team when playing for the Nebraska Cornhuskers during the 1950s as an outstanding lineman, traveling quite a long road to reach that athletic perfection. While a high school student at Scribner High in Dodge County, his school had no football program, so Don Boll played head and shoulders above the opposition in basketball, baseball and track. After enlisting in the US Marine Corps toward the close of World War II in 1945, he was encouraged to play football for the Quantico Marine Team and thats where his start came in that sport. Upon leaving the service he enrolled at the University of Nebraska where he lettered three years as a great guard on the gridiron. In 1953 he was selected as Rookie of the Year while playing for the professional football Washington Redskins..

Grenny Lansdell HB D1-USC 1940 NYG 1940 Born 7-16-1918 Died 5-14-1984

Pasadena City College HOF: Considered one of the last of the "triple-threat" backs in college football, Grenny Lansdell originally starred as a halfback on Pasadena Junior College's first undefeated football team in 1936 (9-0). He took his talents to USC where he was an All-American and the Trojans' leading passer from 1937-1939. He not only was a quarterback, but he was a rusher, a punter, a punt returner, and a safety on defense. Lansdell is the highest NFL draft choice ever from PCC as the 10th pick overall in the first round of the 1940 rookie draft by the New York Giants. He had a brief pro career due to serving the military in World War II as a pilot. He would fly jets as an airline pilot for Trans World Airlines for more than 30 years. He was part of PCC's first Sports Hall of Fame class in 1961.

USC HOF: LANSDELL: Grenville "Grenny" Lansdell was an All-American and All-Conference first team quarterback at USC in 1939. The 3-year letterman (1937-38-39) helped USC to a pair of conference titles, AP Top 10 rankings and Rose Bowl wins. He led the Trojans in passing in 1937 (28 completions, 310 yards), 1938 (44, 458) and 1939 (42, 479). He also was the team's leader in rushing, total offense and scoring in 1938 (462 yards, 920 yards, 31 points) and 1939 (742, 1,221, 54). He still ranks among USC's Top 25 career leaders in rushing (23rd with 1,621 yards) and total offense (19th with 2,868 yards). A product of Pasadena Junior College, he played in the 1940 College All-Star Game. He then was selected in the first round of the 1940 NFL draft by the New York Giants and played with them that season. Afterwards, he was a pilot and captain for TWA.

Grenny Lansdell was a star back at USC and the Giants number one pick in 1940. At USC he was a member of the 1939 College Championship team and the leading rusher and scorer at USC in 1938 and 1939. He had started a year of service in the Army in 1939 and joined the Giants in 1940 for training camp. A deep Giants backfield, as well as injuries led him to being sent to the Giants' farm team in Jersey City despite showing promise. He would only play In two games in 1940. After serving as a pilot in World War II he remained in aviation as s pilot for TWA

Andy Marefos FB D12-St. Marys 1941 NYG 1941-1942 Born 7-16-1917 Died 2-18-1996

Obituary: Mr. Marefos was born in San Francisco and was a member of Mission High's city championship team in 1936. He went to St. Mary's College in Moraga, where he again starred in football. He received the 1938 Outstanding Player Award in the Cotton Bowl. After he played in the 1941 East-West Shrine Game, he was a draft pick for the New York Giants football team in 1941.
He also played for the old Los Angeles Dons until he ended his pro career in 1946.
During World War II he served with the Army Air Forces in the South Pacific.

11-22-1942 GAME RECAP (GREEN BAY PRESS-GAZETTE)
(NEW YORK) - Your Uncle Sam was the big winner here Sunday afternoon when the Green Bay Packers and the New York Giants battled to a 21-21 standoff at the Polo Grounds. The gentleman with the high hat came out $17,000 to the good when Al Jolson bought the football at auction between halves. Otherwise, fleet Don Hutson shuffled along to complete more records for the season and the crowd of 30,246 enjoyed one of the best football game seen in old Knickerbocker's town in many years. The game was a tough one for both sides and a tie seemed a good answer to the hour of hard hitting play. The Packers came out of the game in good shape although several of the gridders were bruised, including Hutson, Cecil Isbell, Andy Uram and Buckets Goldenberg. The Giants also had their lumps and not a few of their men limped off to the sidelines. The story of the game from the Green Bay standpoint was that of an uphill battle with the Packers seeking desperately to come from behind. That they did on three occasions testified to their spirit, a spirit that some New Yorkers had felt wouldn't be too high after last week's encounter with the Bears.

TACKLING HARD, TOO
Hutson played a great all-around game. He not only scored 15 points but was tackling hard when the tackles counted. Not only that, Don broke himself a jinx of long standing. Until Sunday he had never scored a touchdown against the Maramen in league play. But he made up for it with a pair and in all took 14 aerials for a total gain of 134 yards. Three other marks went by the board while the crowd sat back in awe. The first mark was that of catching the most passes in a league season, 71. He shared the old record of 58 with Don Looney, who played with the forlorn Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Don surpassed his old mark of 1,032 yards gained on passes in one season with a new standard of 1,166. Finally, his 16 touchdowns on passes in one season raised his old record from 14. And, to top it off, he raised his season's scoring mark to 125 points. He still has two games to go. The Giants drew first blood midway in the opening period when Merle Hapes brought Lou Brock's punt back to his 38. Tuffy Leemans, a mighty foeman, on second down, tossed a pass to O'Neale Adams for a first down on the Giant 49. Leemans again uncorked his arm and big Jim Lee Howell caught the toss and pranced to the Packer 43. Tuffy followed with a line smash for seven and two plays later continued on for a first down on the Packer 16.

The crowd gave tongue then, but Tuffy threw the ball over the goal line for an incompleted pass. On the next shot at it, Leemans lobbed the pill to Ward Cuff and the former Marquette flash continued on for a new set of downs on the Packer five. On the first play, Leemans bulled his way across and, when Cuff converted, the Packers trailed by seven points. The Giants kicked off then and the Wisconsin boys roared back into the fray. Andy Uram took the kick and came back under a full head of steam but was abruptly downed on the 23 when big Al Blozis tackled him around the ears. An Isbell bolt to Lou Brock was incomplete and then Brock ran four yards through the line. Then came the play the crowd was anticipating. Isbell dropped back, calmly held the ball until Hutson was in the clear, then passed to Don who ran out of bounds on the Packer 39. An Isbelll-Brock pass gained but a yard and one to Hutson was incomplete before the pro league stellar battery connected for another first down on the Giant 40.

CROWD IS AMAZED
Two plays later the same pair made it a first down on the Giant 29. Passes moved the ball down to the 10-yard line as the crowd roared in amazement. Then Hutson waltzed into the end zone, Isbell threw and it was 7-6. Hutson added the extra point and the game was tied.

GIANTS REGAIN LEAD
It was shortly after that the Giants came back. Soar had returned a Lou Brock punt to his 25 on a short run. Andy Marefos, the big Greek with the mustache, went through a big hole in the center for eight yards. Then he faded back, took a leaf from the Packers' book and threw a long pass to Will Walls. A great block by Don Lieberum cleared the decks, and Walls was on his way over the goal line. Cuff again converted and the Giants had regained their seven-point lead. The dizzy scoring pace wasn't yet completed for the period as the crowd watched the dogged Packers come ripping back to tie it up at the half. The Bays didn't fool. Taking the following kickoff they came right down the field from their goal line, Tony Canadeo caught the kickoff and ran up a wide lane to the Packer 35, where he was spilled just when it seemed he was away. Lou Brock pushed through for four and then Isbell lobbed to Ray Riddick for a first down on the Giant 48. Canadeo galloped for six and Isbell completed a pass to Hutson for a first down on the Giant 28.

PACKER DRIVE STALLS
Brock made a yard, and a pass, Isbell to Riddick, put the ball just inside the five-yard line. Isbell's bullet was taken by Hutson for the touch, and he also kicked the extra point. Once more, a few minutes later, it seemed that the Packers were on their way but with less than a minute to play, the drive stalled near midfield. A penalty that pushed the Packers back to their 12 in the third period didn't help the Wisconsin cause. Hapes roared back with Canadeo's punt to the Packer 26. After Cuff had gained a pair on a reverse. Leemans tossed to him for a first down on the Packer seven. Cecil Isbell made the tackle and hurt his knee. He was taken out in favor of Joe Laws and the Packers' chances seemed about a good as Schicklegruber's. Hapes, in two plunges, took the ball to the one yard line and Leemans slashed over. Cuff made it blackjack with his conversion. In the last period, with Isbell again in action, the Packers moved down to the Gotham 13 and Hutson missed a field goal try for the 22. That seemed to be the end of the line and the crowd started to edge toward the exits, but the Packers had one more sting left and took the ball a few moments later when Hapes punted out on the Packer 27. Then one of the most beautiful plays of the day was unfolded. Ted Fritsch poked his nose into a quick opening in the line, was aided by several clean blocks and swung into the clear, apparently headed for a touchdown. He ran 55 yards while the fans quit their rush for the exits to watch. They saw Hapes knock the former Stevens Point walloper out on the Giant 18. The Packers struck quickly then with Lou Brock authoring a dash to the ten-yard line. Cuff knocked down Isbell's pass intended for Hutson but Brock rammed to a first down on the seven. Old man Hein lifted his aged paws and deflected a pass from from Isbell that went over Hutson's head and into the end zone. The Giants were watching Hutson on the next play and the Packers crossed them up beautifully, Canadeo lowering his head and rushing straight through center and over the goal line.

CALMLY ADDS POINT
There was a chance for drama then, with Hutson back to try for the point that would cause the deadlock. But Don calmly added it and the crowd sat back to see what else would happen in this, one of the most see-saw games of the year in the pro league. There wasn't much more. The Packers raised their dying hopes with their followers with less than a minute to play when several passes moved the ball into New York territory. Coach Curly Lambeau vainly tried to stop the clock by sending in a substitute but somehow the officials overlooked the newcomer and time ran out while the Packers were huddling for the final play. The Packers made 23 first downs and had 436 yards net gain. The New Yorkers had ten first downs and 301 yards from scrimmage. The Black and Gold passers threw 40 aerials and connected 23 times.

HINKLE INTERESTED FAN
One of the most interested spectators was Clarke Hinkle, former Packer battering ram. It seemed as though the respected Hink was about to don a Packer uniform during the last five minutes. Jolson's contribution of 70,000 bucks came during the half in a spirited auction directed from midfield by a deep lunged announcer. The ball was put up for an opening bid of $500 and from then on everybody was for himself. They boosted it to $50,000 and then upwards, five thousand, then two thousand at a time. Finally, over in Section 29, Jolson waved his flag on the bid of $70,000. That was all. Furcoated, he stood up to acknowledge the plaudits of the crowd. The crowd replied in kind. "Mammy," it roared in appreciation.

History

Stuart Football Prespective: Best Players in Pro Football History: 71-80, by Brad Oremland

75. Michael Strahan
Defensive End
New York Giants, 1993-2007
141.5 sacks; 24 FF, 15 FR, 17 yards, TD; 4 INT, 124 yards, 2 TD
1 DPOY, 3 consensus All-Pro, 6 AP All-Pro, 7 Pro Bowls, 2000s All-Decade Team
A successful media personality after his playing career, Michael Strahan initially made his name as a high-motor pass rusher. In the 1980s and 90s, teams usually lined up their best pass rusher on the quarterbacks blind side, and offenses answered by putting their best pass blockers at left tackle. While many pass rushers today play on the opposite side, matched up with the right tackle, Strahan was among the first perennial Pro Bowlers to regularly line up on the front side rather than the blind side. He collected a huge number of sacks from that position, officially 6th all-time. In 2001, he set the official single-season record, 22.5 sacks, although many people believe the last one was a gift from his friend Brett Favre.
Strahan was effective both with a bull rush and a speed rush. As evidenced by his media career, hes intelligent a quick thinker and he applied that on the field, manipulating blockers out of position or off-balance. He out-schemed, overpowered, and outworked his opponents, never giving up on a play. Strahan wasnt as impressive to watch as some other great pass rushers, not as flashy as Dwight Freeney or Julius Peppers. Often he just rammed into the blocker and kept moving him backward until they reached the quarterback. The sacks almost look like accidents. One-hundred forty-one and a half accidents.
In his 2001 Defensive Player of the Year season, Strahan led the NFL in sacks (22.5), tackles for loss (24), forced fumbles (6), and fumble return TDs (1). He led the league in sacks again in 2003, one of only six players since 1982 (when sacks became an official statistic) to lead the NFL in sacks more than once. The 2003 season may have actually been more impressive. League-wide sack rates were substantially lower in 2003, and that Giants team was terrible, 4-12 with nine double-digit losses. Opponents seldom faced predictable passing situations in which for Strahan to tee off on the QB, and his teammates did little to command attention from opposing blockers, allowing frequent double-teams on Strahan.
Strahan had 9.5 sacks in 10 postseason games, including 1.5 sacks against the Ravens in Super Bowl XXXV and a sack against the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. He had nine sacks in his final regular season and retired when he was still a valuable player. He played the run well and never seemed to get discouraged, collecting coverage sacks on plays when other rushers might have given up after their first move failed to produce.

71. Roosevelt Brown
Offensive Tackle
New York Giants, 1953-65
5 consensus All-Pro, 8 AP All-Pro, 9 Pro Bowls, 1950s All-Decade Team, 75th Anniversary Team
Rosey Brown was All-Pro every year from 1956-63, usually a consensus first-team selection. In those eight seasons, the New York Giants went 73-25-4 (.745) and reached the NFL Championship Game six times. It is the greatest dynasty in the almost 100-year history of the franchise. Did the Giants success win Brown his acclaim, or did Browns excellence give birth to the teams success?
Almost certainly, a bit of both, but Browns talent was unmistakeable. He was that rarest of players, an eye-catching offensive lineman. Relative to his peers, Brown was probably the fastest offensive tackle in history. He pulled, leading sweeps for Frank Gifford and Alex Webster. He wasnt overpowering, winning with speed and technique rather than brute strength, but he was perfect for offensive coordinator Vince Lombardis scheme (1954-58). When the Giants started winning in 1956, fans noticed that their team had the fastest lineman in the league, a tackle who blocked all over the field. Paul Zimmerman called him eye-catching on the sweeps or downfield.
Browns speed gave the Giants flexibility to run plays no other team could pull off. Here was a player who could pass protect against Gene Brito and lead Giffords sweeps, big enough to block linemen and fast enough to block almost anyone. When he finally slowed down, the Giants fell apart. There were plenty of other factors in the teams sudden collapse, but its not simply a coincidence that Browns best seasons were the teams best seasons. He was a game-changing player quite literally, since the Giants re-wrote their playbook to take advantage of his speed. Brown was just the second pure offensive lineman inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame (two years after Jim Parker).
