NFT: HBO Max

UConn4523 : 7/16/2019 10:45 am
new streaming platform coming in 2020? Hopes to rival Netflix and the like. I’m intrigued but they are separating it from HBO Go/Next which is pretty dumb, IMO. Users want 1 platform, no idea why they made that decision and just tier the subscription.
HBO Max - ( New Window )
$$$$$$

Of course
UConn4523 : 7/16/2019 10:56 am : link
but you can make the same money with tiered subscriptions and only have 1 service to support.
Content wise, this looks pretty killer
Ben in Tampa : 7/16/2019 11:09 am : link
I am looking forward to it.

Between this and Disney+, Netflix has to really get aggressive to stay in the lead.
The future will be
cjd2404 : 7/16/2019 11:09 am : link
HBO/Max for HBO and all Warner Media movies and shows (maybe DirecTV NOW - I've heard a couple different reports on that)

Disney+ for Hulu and all Disney Movies and shows

Netflix for all their shows and content (whatever that may be)

Then you have Amazon Prime, Youtube, etc that all have their pluses and minuses

It appears that every company will form their own streaming service and then force you to pay them for the right to watch movies and shows...

So your choice will be pay for all or some and be right back to the cost of cable..or pirate all or some and risk getting caught.

I bet all this will do is raise the amount of piracy.
“Cord cutting”

is going to go from cost savings to convenience. Been saying it for a while now. The wildcard is sports. If you hate sports you can save money most likely, if you love sports your costs are going to be the same (unless movies and such don’t matter).

The mergers between Fox and Disney recently was all because Disney was behind Netflix in the market pivot.

Netflix needs to keep innovating and they will never be caught. If they rest on their laurels then they will be.
I didn't get the impression they're separating it from Go/Now
Gatorade Dunk : 7/16/2019 11:19 am : link
Just that Go/Now will continue as they are, as a lower tier that includes HBO content only, whereas HBO Max will include all of the Go/Now content PLUS the other streaming provider content.

Did I completely misunderstand what was being described in the link?

You’re right. The cost of all these services at one time will likely be equal to or ever greater than cable. The difference is if there is not anything you want to watch on HBO Max? Cancel it right from the app. Something you want to see on Netflix? Sign up from your phone! Want to juggle your monthly bill? Super simple.

That’s why I don’t really sweat the cost of these things. If I’m not watching it, I don’t have to pay for it and it takes less than a minute.
No you got it
UConn4523 : 7/16/2019 11:21 am : link
just weird that they will service multiple platforms instead of 1 with tiered content levels. Logging into Netflix is great because my stuff and the kids profile is all 1 session. Backing out to open another app is a very annoying extra step.

That was really hard for Netflix to do, but they made the usability so easy that it's seamless, so people didn't get upset over it.
does this mean that DC streaming service will go there?

Netflix and Disney are no brainers for me but after that I don’t have much interest. I’ll probably drop cable when disney plus comes out and replace with a YOuTube TV but even then I’d only really save $20-$30 per month. But it’s the convenience of not having to run wires, switch when I want, etc.
will this cover 4K content

now? read an article that HBO go still did not have that

Good post. Eventually, with all the streaming services out there and the monthly fees, you might be better off sticking with cable!

To add
figgy2989 : 7/16/2019 11:51 am : link
If we are going down the path of all the major outlets only allowing their movies on their streaming services, eventually cable is going to have to come down to affordable levels. Otherwise, what the hell are you paying for!
I've been thinking about this a lot because I need to move
Zeke's Alibi : 7/16/2019 12:01 pm : link
in 6 months and probably won't be splitting bills anymore. Right now I have Hulu, Netflix, Prime, just canceled HBO, and reduced rate digital cable with Sports pack as my condo includes basic cable. I occasionally pirate. I'm thinking either I'm getting someone's cable password or I'm getting cable, cancelling all my streaming services, and getting a VPN. All this separation of streaming services is just going to increase pirating. I'm already at my wits end how many streaming services I use and cancelled my HBO since there is no appointment viewing anymore.

My guess is Disney will acquire Netflix
Ron from Ninerland : 7/16/2019 3:20 pm : link
Netflix's current trajectory is untenable . They are about to lose all their Disney content. The Disney/Marvel stuff ( Daredevil, Jessica Jones ) is in limbo and many of their other popular series are being picked away. Much if their so called "original" content is licensed , they don't own it. Going forward, I don't see how they can charge $13.95 a month for "Stranger Things". The path of least resistance would be for Disney to just buy them. It stands to reason the Disney is going to want to offer some non-Disney content and perhaps offer multiple tiers of service.

The era of cable TV has passed --Dolan was probably smart to sell when he did. Streaming definitely the wave of the present / future and saying good bye to cable bills is a pleasure. That said, I am struck by how little the content of these services appeal to me. I'm a bit of a geezer---late (very late) 60's ---and apart from live sports (not ESPN), some PBS content like some cooking, some historical (not "chick" stuff like Victoria or Downton Abbey) and documentaries, TCM movies, some business news and an Amazon series or 2, most offerings have no appeal to me. Network series seem to be re-writes of stories done before with too many commercials, HGTV-type stuff is nonsense and HBO / Showtime movies and shows seem to be a waste of time and repetitive, unless you want insipid movies and flying dragons. I can literally channel surf at any given time and find nothing of interest. Has the culture passed me by? Wonder if any other BBIers feel the same way?

All of the mergers that Disney just did was because of Netflix. Why would Netflix bow down now.

Everyone keeps saying, well Netflix should just give up at this point, but they have so many data points that the companies trying to duplicate them do not have and they use them to it's full potential. They have 10+ years of data that everyone else does not.

The HBOGO app is so fucking bad. The only reason I use it is because I want to watch some of the content that they have. It is the only reason. I compare it to Netflix because they are the gold standard. Netflix's usability is on another level. I loath for the ability to skip an intro on any other streaming platform.

Netflix is going to pivot away from streaming some how and who knows what that will be, but I'm sure they will see it.

They should looking into maybe broadcasting their own news. Etc.

Amazon on the other hand is going to take some of the NFL away from major networks the next time a deal is negotiated and that will transform streaming forever.
I don't think people realize how many original shows
UConn4523 : 7/16/2019 3:43 pm : link
are actually Netflix's. It isn't just Stranger Things - they are constantly pumping out shows that hit all ages groups. And when Marvel leaves those huge budgets will be spent elsewhere. Maybe Disney buys them, but not anytime soon, there's no reason for it (from Netflix's perspective).

Agreed on HBO Apps, it feels like its from 2010.
I’m not sure Disney buying Netflix could pass regulatory
Ben in Tampa : 7/16/2019 4:09 pm : link
and even if it could, that would be a huge check for Disney to write. I think they bought FOX for $70b, but NFLX is about double that cost with no premium.
Each of my brothers buys one of the services
TurdFurguson : 7/16/2019 4:19 pm : link
I buy one, My dad buys one. We each buy the highest tier (4 TV simultaneous access to 4K) which is around $20 each. Everyone has access to everything.
Netflix is also going to be spending $15 billlion
UConn4523 : 7/16/2019 4:37 pm : link
on content this year. Their library is absolutely massive and its going to continue to increase.

"The Irishman" from Scorcese is also coming to Netflix. Their expansion into movies has been gradual but they are allocating a ton of money to get movegoers glued to their couches.

I'd like to see Netflix get into news (not a big news fan but I'd watch something new and non-network) as well as a dedicated sports network of some sorts.
I think Vice is an obvious candidate to get acquired
Ben in Tampa : 7/16/2019 5:12 pm : link
By Netflix ... or any of the streaming platforms.
Vice stinks
UConn4523 : 7/16/2019 5:45 pm : link
and it already has its brand, following and take on things. I’d love a new, neutral news station that breaks the mold.
