new streaming platform coming in 2020? Hopes to rival Netflix and the like. I’m intrigued but they are separating it from HBO Go/Next which is pretty dumb, IMO. Users want 1 platform, no idea why they made that decision and just tier the subscription.
HBO Max - (
New Window )
Between this and Disney+, Netflix has to really get aggressive to stay in the lead.
Disney+ for Hulu and all Disney Movies and shows
Netflix for all their shows and content (whatever that may be)
Then you have Amazon Prime, Youtube, etc that all have their pluses and minuses
It appears that every company will form their own streaming service and then force you to pay them for the right to watch movies and shows...
So your choice will be pay for all or some and be right back to the cost of cable..or pirate all or some and risk getting caught.
I bet all this will do is raise the amount of piracy.

The mergers between Fox and Disney recently was all because Disney was behind Netflix in the market pivot.
Netflix needs to keep innovating and they will never be caught. If they rest on their laurels then they will be.
Did I completely misunderstand what was being described in the link?
You’re right. The cost of all these services at one time will likely be equal to or ever greater than cable. The difference is if there is not anything you want to watch on HBO Max? Cancel it right from the app. Something you want to see on Netflix? Sign up from your phone! Want to juggle your monthly bill? Super simple.
That’s why I don’t really sweat the cost of these things. If I’m not watching it, I don’t have to pay for it and it takes less than a minute.
That was really hard for Netflix to do, but they made the usability so easy that it's seamless, so people didn't get upset over it.
Netflix and Disney are no brainers for me but after that I don’t have much interest. I’ll probably drop cable when disney plus comes out and replace with a YOuTube TV but even then I’d only really save $20-$30 per month. But it’s the convenience of not having to run wires, switch when I want, etc.

Good post. Eventually, with all the streaming services out there and the monthly fees, you might be better off sticking with cable!
All of the mergers that Disney just did was because of Netflix. Why would Netflix bow down now.
Everyone keeps saying, well Netflix should just give up at this point, but they have so many data points that the companies trying to duplicate them do not have and they use them to it's full potential. They have 10+ years of data that everyone else does not.
The HBOGO app is so fucking bad. The only reason I use it is because I want to watch some of the content that they have. It is the only reason. I compare it to Netflix because they are the gold standard. Netflix's usability is on another level. I loath for the ability to skip an intro on any other streaming platform.
Netflix is going to pivot away from streaming some how and who knows what that will be, but I'm sure they will see it.
They should looking into maybe broadcasting their own news. Etc.
Amazon on the other hand is going to take some of the NFL away from major networks the next time a deal is negotiated and that will transform streaming forever.
Agreed on HBO Apps, it feels like its from 2010.
"The Irishman" from Scorcese is also coming to Netflix. Their expansion into movies has been gradual but they are allocating a ton of money to get movegoers glued to their couches.
I'd like to see Netflix get into news (not a big news fan but I'd watch something new and non-network) as well as a dedicated sports network of some sorts.
