NFT: Received a concussion

Sonic Youth : 7/16/2019 4:38 pm
Anyone else ever get one? I passed out from heat exhaustion and hit my head on a tiled floor, woke up face up staring at the ceiling.

Was taken to the ER and couldn't really walk straight. I was feeling extremely drunk and had blurry vision for what I believe was 2-3 hours before falling asleep (doctor told me it was okay to sleep).

This was 48 hours ago and I'm still feeling a slightly-more-severe-than-mild headache that's omnipresent and a general feeling of "out of it".

Called out of two days but am probably going to go back as I don't know how concussions are typically treated in the workplace. I have seen stories online (or heard anecdotes from friends and family) of people needing over a week to recover, while others say they're fine the next day.

I have been knocked out before after falling down while ice skating and received what was told a "mild" concussion, but that was years ago and this is definitely lingering more than that did.

I'm hoping I'm good to go tomorrow, but it's frustrating when all you can do is pretty much wait and not exert yourself. I also really wanted to get back into the gym early this week, but am unsure of how long to wait before going lifting anything.

Has anyone else had any experiences with concussions? I get everyone's different, but hearing other anecdotes is something that seems to always be helpful.
I have never had one (that I know of)

take care of yourself. Sounds scary. All the best.
Twice
Greg from LI : 7/16/2019 4:42 pm : link
Both when I was young. I was kneed in the head in a JV football game, the other was in a car wreck when my head hit the window and cracked it the summer after high school graduation. The first one didn't linger for long. The second one, I had headaches and a fairly intense aversion to bright lights for several months afterwards.
Recovering from one right

now. I was in a car accident a few months ago. I have been rehabbing the whip lash, and I go through dizzy spells a couple of times a week.

Go to a Physical Therapy, they will give you some exercises to help you out.

hope you and everyone else recover. Best wishes.
I've had countless concussions in my life.

The earliest would have to be when I was only days old. My mother was carrying me out of the hospital when her arm was jostled by another causing me to fall out of the carrier. I had to have stitches around half my head as the skull was cracked. When I was released in a few days, she was driving home. Carrier wasn't strapped in (this was a different time without the same safety precautions). I was just placed on the bench seat of the pick-up truck. The door opened while the truck was moving. My head split open again. When I was a little boy (primary teeth), I ran head first into a wall. Every one of my teeth had to be capped (I had a silver smile for all my youth pictures). During my young adolescence, I was a huge fan of WWF pro wrestling. My best friend and I were wrestling. He was a fan of Ivan Putski and wanted to try a pile-driver. Sure. Got strapped down on a flat board and an ambulance ride later. Then of course my football playing days had quite a few. I had over 12 neck injuries causing ambulatory service on a backboard mainly caused by me lowering my head and spearing opponents.
I'm pretty sure I had at least one

When I was 9

I went sleigh riding across the street from my house. Had to be 20-30 kids around same age just having fun and we tried knocking whoever walked up the hill. Well I missed a guy, turned around to laugh, and when I looked straight ahead, I went head first into a telephone pole.

I flew into a snow pile where my sister dug me out. I was unconscious for about 10 hours. I was blinded for 6. Spent a week in the hospital to get various tests done. Had to watch the Bears-Giants 1990 playoff game in the hospital with my dad.

I played all sports growing up
RobCrossRiver56 : 7/16/2019 5:12 pm : link
Football, Hockey, Baseball and even some Rugby. My only concussion was when my 5 y/o daughter dove on me on the couch with her knee striking me right between the eyes and the bridge of my nose. Saw a big giant flash and I was down. Next day at work I could not concentrate and my head still really hurt. I went to the er and yea, concussion.

Pain went away in a day but took a week to really clear up. Damm kids..

Payasdaddy : 7/16/2019 5:54 pm : link
in the 90's one pretty hi speed head to head
Played whole game, was woozy with everything trailing me
was literally nearly giggling throughout just dizzy
head a pretty good headache and felt like i was on a lsd trip for a few days
probably had a couple other mild ones (once boxing with someone who was to skilled for me even with headgear
had some stars) lasted the session but after that hell no to hard sparring)
luckily no signs of cte yet!!
I have had several
bigblue1124 : 7/16/2019 6:02 pm : link
but one really bad one that lingered for months. I took a face plant in a windshield of a car doing 30 to 40 on my bike from some idiot doing an illegal u-turn. The only thing that saved him and maybe me was his steering wheel and my helmet. I still to this day get a yearly neurologist visit to make sure the mark on my brain from the impact does not grow larger. I had the dizzy spells and a few face plants from being lightheaded for months. It take’s time for the healing process depending on the grade concussed. I swear mine is the reason I get cluster headaches now, but who knows I am not a doc.

Don’t rush it! If you still don’t feel right take the time if you have it rather than doing another face plant and F, yourself up more.
Hope you feel better it suck’s I know.
Only an asshole

Would crack a joke over a very serious injury and go figure he’s from Toronto!!!

Must be something in the water there.

You should consider a break from BBI.

(The longer, the better.)
Dude take it easy for a few days...
rnargi : 7/16/2019 6:26 pm : link
..watch for blurred vision, sudden headaches, and reaction to light. Just take it easy...I have had a couple and one bad one when I was playing hockey. I hope you feel better soon. Seriously, if you relapse, get someone to take you to the hospital immediately. These things are nothing to fool. Take care, buddy.
Yeah my advice
dep026 : 7/16/2019 6:39 pm : link
Is stay in a dark room. Stay off your phone. Watch tv for 20 minutes a clip.

It sounds simple and easy but it really does work.
It's funny how everyone has different concussion symptoms.
Zeke's Alibi : 7/16/2019 7:08 pm : link
I've had a few and never had any lingering effects.
Never had one but

it sounds bad. What were you doing that caused passing out from heat exhaustion?

Holy smokes. Check the Guinness Book, you might be in it.

The concussion and post-concussion syndrome

Symptoms from the concussion generally clear up in a week. But then you can develop post concussion syndrome which is a mixture of the physical and psychological. Dr who treated me was very skeptical of PCS but I know I felt stuff not right with my vision, balance and concentration. But in retrospect, some of it was psychological too. When your head gets fucked up, it’s scary

Post concussion syndrome lasted several months for me. This guy I met at the clinic had it for over a year. He rationally knew part of it was psychological but couldn’t shake the symptoms

Good luck. And don’t worry if you are feeling weird. It’s just part of the process and eventually it will go away.

PS: not everyone develops post concussion
Syndrome. Just trying to prepare you if you are still feeling things down the road

seeing you passed out and hit the back of your head I would take this very serious. Be honest on how you feel. This is no joking matter it can be very serious. I am a head high school coach and this can take a while if you are not feeling good just say so.

I presume you signed your daughter up for Muay Thai instruction shortly afterwards? You're sitting on a gold mine there...

but if you passed out from heat exhaustion that could be contributing to the lingering effects as well. Take it easy man.

Diver- how the hell are you even walking around. OH my god, that is like reading a hospital report for a group of people, not one person.
Have you seen a DR
gmenatlarge : 7/17/2019 8:07 am : link
seems pretty serious, I would see a physician or preferably a neurologist.
Thanks guys, appreciate it

See if she will give you a script of Physical Therapy for it, and to see a neurologist.
I had a concussion a few months ago
AnnapolisMike : 7/17/2019 9:17 am : link
Limit your physical activity and keep your electronics time down a bit if you can. I went for a light jog about 2 weeks after the concussion and the symptoms came back immediately.

I would guess it took about 2 months to really feel normal. Just take it easy.

That's what's killing me - I was finally getting back into a groove with the gym after gaining like 5-8 lbs I can't lose when on cortisteroids (another nightmare)... last thing I needed was something to limit me physically again.

Been a tough year health wise lol but at least it's all been things that are fixable as opposed to super serious health problems.
I suffered a really bad concussion
Hammer : 7/17/2019 3:32 pm : link
Playing football when I was about 14.

I got kneed in the head, crawled off the field and fell asleep laying on the sidelines.

That was the last time I played tackle football.
I got one once when I fell backwards and hit my head on ice. A friend
Ira : 7/17/2019 3:36 pm : link
who was there called a nurse who we both knew and she told us what to do. It was a mild concussion and I was fine the next day.

This is actually very similar to the one I had when I was an adolescent, which is what I suspect was my first concussion.
I was fortunate to have only suffered a minor one in college
Matt M. : 7/17/2019 5:16 pm : link
I was playing intramural softball and took a knee to the top of the ear/below the temple. I finished the game feeling a little "out of it" but still able to run, etc. I had a small cut, which was fine. But, when I started feeling dizzy and nauseous later that afternoon, I went to the ER. Mild concussion was the diagnosis. And after a day or two of taking it easy and icing my head, I had no lingering symptoms. But, to this day, when I open my mouth, that side of my head juts out more at the jaw joint.

In HS during football practice is the only other time I can think of that looking back may have been a concussion. I was lined up on the DL during kicking practice, which is crazy considering I was a CB/slot receiver giving away at least 50 lbs. to the OL lined up opposite me, and we are not talking about a very large OL. Well we collided and I remember the sound of the helmets banging and mine twisting to the side. But, I don't recall any symptoms later; just the bell rung feeling for a second or two after.

I took a lot of other shots to the head playing pick-up tackle games, etc. with no noticeable symptoms, but there has to have been an aggregate impact, which could also have been a reason the time in college resulted in a concussion in the first place.
Take care of yourself, Sonic Youth...
Pete in CO : 7/17/2019 8:00 pm : link
...I'm convinced I had 2 in one day while playing (over 40) lacrosse. First one was a "bell-ringer," so I kept playing. Second one, about 30 minutes later, was an absolute de-cleater. I tried to stand up and fell flat on my face. Was able to get home and took a nap for 3 hours. Felt worse after so went to ER.

Docs were PISSED at my choice to keep playing after first hit. Told me that the second ones are the dangerous ones - but within one hour...could've been really bad. Light, sound all affected me for 2 months after. Watch mood swings, too, if yours was significant enough. Limit screen time. I know you're feeling better, but your brain may not be there yet.
