What are the expectations for Big George?

Ben in Tampa : 7/17/2019 10:03 am
Outside of Jones, George Asafo-Adjei is the most intriguing player to me that we drafted. He has been praised for his attitude and work ethic, and from what I've seen so far, is generally an easy guy to cheer for.

The Giants believed this draft was deep with talent at offensive tackle, but the reality is that Big George was a 7th round pick out of Kentucky. The Giants offensive line appears to be much improved on paper, however there are still some 'unsettled' spots in the group. Remmers is one year prove it deal coming off injury and Chad Wheeler is Chad Wheeler.

So what are the expectations for this guy? Could he contribute this year? Is he the starter-in-waiting? Practice Squad? A 7th round "we'll see what happens" project?
Our last draft pick?
BigBlueDownTheShore : 7/17/2019 10:06 am : link
I have absolutely no expectations for him and neither should anyone else.

If he actually contributes in the years to come, that would be an added bonus to this draft.

I think they keep 8 OL on the final 53 with 7 of those spots close to locked up.

Starters: Solder, Hernandez, Halapio, Zeitler, Remmers
Reserves: Pulley*, Wheeler

Battle between Brown, Mihalik, O'Hagan, Big George for the 8th spot and if Brown can play both C and G then I think he's got the inside track for now.

*I can also see DG pulling another Brett Jones deal and moving Pulley (or Halapio if he loses the C battle) for a late round pick, especially if Brown or O'Hagan flash in camp.

based on a 10-year period this is the chances of finding a 7th round pick, who winds up starting half their NFL games.

So, a less than 10% chance he winds up starting.

7th Round - DB (11%) OL (9%) QB (6%) WR (5%) DL (3%) LB (2%) RB (0%) TE (0%)

Hunter on George Asafo-Adjei: “My son works at Kentucky. He works in the football office down there. We found out from the inside out – he talked about what a quality guy he was. He was probably the most respected guy on the offensive side of the ball. He talked about how he competed with Josh Allen on a day-to-day basis. He talked about his character, work ethic and his toughness. All of those things peaked interest. You watch him on tape and see that he has a lot of athleticism and power. He has a lot of toughness and plays in the best football conference in the country. We have some technical work to do. He is a rookie and you have to tell him to do something once and he goes on and does it right the next time. He picked up the offense much quicker than I thought he was going to. When you compare our offense to their offense, we have a lot more volume to it with a lot of the things that we were doing. We need to continue to work with him technically to get him up to speed but you have to like everything about him. When you read him, that is one of the first things that I found out. He had committed to Kentucky early and is a man of his word. When all those other schools came in like Alabama, that is legit. Those people tried to come in and recruit him. He gave Kentucky his word and didn’t go anywhere. He has some developmental potential.”

Hopefully he surprises me.

get the pads on and see what he looks like in preseason. it's not like Giants are deep at the position
I think he has a solid chance of making the team
Jay on the Island : 7/17/2019 10:27 am : link
but he will redshirt this season unless injuries force him onto the field. He has potential but as PJ showed the odds are not good. He might have a future inside at G if he doesn't work out at RT. Hopefully he shows that he can also play G along with RT which would make him a valuable backup.

Two under the radar roster battles I am excited to see are Asafo-Adjei vs. Paul Adams for the 4th OT spot and Evan Brown vs. James O'Hagan for the second interior backup spot.

Should be that you never see them play.
Anything more than that is a bonus

Saw 2 games of film only (was more watching Conrad). This is my summary:

Best
Athleticism, Fluidity in Space, Climbing to secondary
*
Concerns
Stance (Waist Bender), Get Off, UoH (placement),
*
Projection
Too little for projection. Need to see the following in transition

Stance change
too bent over, not efficient out to 1st strike/early engagement
*
UoH

needs to evolve immediately *
they are targets

Player Comp: body type looks like un-developed Patrick Omameh with a lot more athleticism

There's a saying. I forgot exactly how it goes.

at least a job on the Practice Squad and a reasonable chance to make the 53-man roster in the second year.

This doesn't say he actually makes the team, but if he doesn't have a reasonable chance, it is a failed pick. Period.

Starting RT year 2.

He didn't even have a write up in ourlads? Not even a little blurb? I'd say pretty low. It happens, but it's pretty unusual everyone misses on a guy and he becomes a strong starter. Anecdotal evidence of this majorly biases people to think it happens way more often than it really does.
Because there is only one cut, I would say it is likely he will end up
Ivan15 : 7/17/2019 1:23 pm : link
On the practice squad. Other teams are not going to be very aggressive on signing cuts or poaching other practice squads, at least for the first month of the season.
Unless a starter gets hurt and Wheeler has to start.
Ivan15 : 7/17/2019 1:26 pm : link
Then George is on the 53.
He is definitely intriguing.
Johnny5 : 7/17/2019 2:25 pm : link
He is a big man that looks to be in pretty good shape from what I've seen. I bet he lands on the practice squad but he is definitely and interesting prospect for a 7th rounder.
Look - he is not starting in 2019
Bob in Newburgh : 7/17/2019 3:21 pm : link
With that being the case, you want him on the PS, not the roster.

As long as he is in the final cutdown, it is easy for late draft choice o-lineman to clear waivers, and stay on the PS for an entire first season.
From 7th pick to starter is

lot to ask from any player. Just making the team is a home run.
Expect him to make the roster or be offered a spot on the PS
DavidinBMNY : 7/17/2019 3:56 pm : link
They believe in his potential. Last year they carried and red shirted an OL all season who was a UDFA. I get the sense they want to invest in developing the position. Can you believe Diehl was a 5th rd pick - the impact of developing a player later in the draft, it does work out is huge.
Are the Giants drafting for character

At the possible expense of more football related criteria. It seems the Giants often take flyers on guys with enormous potential and few indications they can play football. Beware the ghost of Leo Durocher.

Is this like your first post in about 10 years? How are you?
Nothing. But get ready to play as if you were a starter
Jimmy Googs : 7/17/2019 11:29 pm : link
You will only ultimately help the team and make a lot of money for yourself if you do.

It seems the expectations are that he will put in the hard work to
BlueLou'sBack : 7/18/2019 12:04 am : link
Improve his technique to the point where in 2020 or 2021 he's actually a candidate to make the roster and compete to start. He's got AA and supposedly is a dogged worker.

He's also clueless re Technical OL proficiency.

Deihl started as a rookie, a terrible comparison.
I don't expect much from him, not this year anyway.
Klaatu : 7/18/2019 7:50 am : link
I think it would take a minor miracle for him to make the final 53 (assuming they're not decimated by injuries), more likely that he ends up on the Practice Squad.
I would expect him to make the PS squad
Rudy5757 : 7/18/2019 10:48 am : link
Anything else is gravy this year. A lot depends on him. I wonder if he has been working on technique the last few weeks on his own. Little things like that can set a guy up to make it.

Our RT position is open for the taking right now. Remmers is coming off injury so while he is penciled in as the starter he is an unknown. We have seen a few years of wheeler and from the looks of it he is what he is, a back end of the roster player. If wheeler is the starter our OL is not really as settled as we think.

Maybe he can come in and steal a spot. the Giants apparently did their homeweork on him and probably had him pegged in the 7th if available. The coach had a chance to speak on him and it sounds like the talent is there, how quickly he is able to get coached up is up to him. If he makes the PS I think we see him on the roster in 2019 at some point.
If he makes the opening day roster
Mike from SI : 7/18/2019 11:22 am : link
then it's more likely something has gone wrong (e.g., injuries) versus his impressing that much. But as a 7th round pick it wouldn't be crazy for him to make the roster. (Yes, I'm hedging a little bit.)

Been around the block a few times. I tried out the old Chinese saying: those who speak don't know, and those who know don't speak. After a long period of silence, I discovered I still don't know anything.

last season they didn't have a starting quality RT. They picked up one in FA - I don't see how anyone has that 2nd RT locked up.

With someone in house at Kentucky - they probably had more info on him than normal. I'd be shocked (and probably a little concerned) if he was the starter. But, given their thinness at the position and the possibility he might be able to play a little guard in a pinch - he could grab one of those last few roster spots
